Cím:The Role of Methionine Supplementation on Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Status of Poultry-A Review / James Kachungwa Lugata, Arth David Sol Valmoria Ortega, Csaba Szabó
Dátum:2022
ISSN:2077-0472
Megjegyzések:The physiological status of poultry can be disturbed by different stressors that may lead to oxidative stress conditions. Oxidative stress activates defense systems, which mitigates the adverse effects. Several lines of the poultry defense system exist, including enzyme systems such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and non-enzymatic antioxidants such as Glutathione (GSH). Methionine-a vital amino acid in poultry nutrition-plays a significant role in protein synthesis, transsulfuration, and transmethylation and is also involved in several biochemical pathway activations that can affect the antioxidant system. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the role of methionine in poultry under heat stress or managing stress, on the antioxidants responsible for scavenging free radicals (GSH) and those responsible for detoxification (SOD, CAT, and GPx). Different levels of methionine supplementation above the requirement (up to 1% Met added on the basal diet) have been tested on the antioxidant status of poultry. It has been shown to improve the antioxidant status and reduce oxidative stress. The results of many experiments on poultry supplemented with diets of different methionine sources indicate that L-Met has good potential to stimulate the antioxidant status of poultry.

Megjegyzések:The semen of domestic mammals is conventionally collected with an artificial vagina (AV) for artificial insemination (AI) or for short- or long-term storage. However, the procedure has certain drawbacks: animal training is not feasible in extensive animal care systems nor among wild species, as the trained animals sometimes fail to mount. Hence, there is a need for alternative semen collection methods. Electroejaculation (EEJ) and epididymal sperm recovery (ESR) are the two effective alternatives to AV. However, in recent years, animal welfare campaigners have called for the ban, in certain EU countries, of EEJ due to its inhumane nature. In this review, alternative methods of sperm collection (by EEJ and ESR, their qualities, and their freezing techniques) are highlighted, as well as the effects of EEJ on pre-freeze and post-thaw ram sperm quality parameters and the animal welfare progress made in EEJ between the 20th and 21st centuries. Additionally, the techniques for enhancing post-thaw sperm quality prior to freezing and for the freezing of EEJ and ESR spermatozoa are explored. ESR and EEJ are reliable alternatives to AV on certain occasions. EEJ is ideal for semen collection in wild or untrained animals, breeding soundness examinations, collection outside of the breeding season, and culling. At the same time, ESR is ideal in cases of castration, accidental death of elite sire, or postmortem for gene conservation purposes or assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) studies.

Cím:Effect of Duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza)-Supplemented Semolina on the Production Parameters and Nutrient Composition of Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) / Toviho Odunayo Abigeal, Moutia Imane, Pusztahelyi Tünde, Bársony Péter
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2077-0472
Megjegyzések:This research explores the potential of using common duckweed (Spyrodela polyrhiza) as a feeding substrate and supplement for yellow mealworm production. Duckweed is known for its high content of protein (20?35%) and essential amino acids. The study aims to assess the effect of the combination of semolina and duckweed as a feeding substrate for yellow mealworm larvae (Te- nebrio molitor). The experiment involved different combinations of semolina and duckweed in var- ying proportions. The treatments included 100% semolina (S), 75% semolina + 25% duckweed (S75D25), 50% semolina + 50% duckweed (S50D50), 25% semolina + 75% duckweed (S25D75), and 100% duckweed (D). Over a six-week period, the production parameters, nutrient composition, amino acid composition, and fatty acid composition of the yellow mealworms were measured and analyzed. The results demonstrate that S75D25 and S50D50 feed combinations were recommended due to their positive effects on production parameters and nutrient composition. Although the D substrate exhibited the highest crude protein content, yellow mealworm larvae did not grow on this substrate. The inclusion of duckweed in the feed had no significant effect on the fatty acid compo- sition of the mealworms, while substrates S25D75 and D induced an improved amino acid compo- sition. In conclusion, incorporating duckweed into the feeding substrate can enhance the production parameters and nutrient composition of yellow mealworms.

Cím:Nutrient Composition and Growth of Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) at Different Ages and Stages of the Life Cycle / Odunayo A. Toviho, Péter Bársony
Dátum:2022
ISSN:2077-0472
Megjegyzések:Abstract: The nutrient composition of yellow mealworm (YM) Tenebrio molitor varies based on the stages of the life cycle, the rearing conditions, and the feeding substrate. This study monitored the growth of yellow mealworm larvae at 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age, separating samples into large-sized and small-sized insects. During the experiment, we measured the nutrient composition: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), crude fibre, chitin, crude ash, and nitrogen free extract (NFE) of YM at different age groups and sizes. We measured the nutrient composition of the pre-moult, moult, cuticle, and pupae as well. The results show that there is no significant difference between the compositions of the different age groups, but larger-sized individuals had a higher DM and crude fibre and lower chitin and NFE than the smaller sizes. The pre-moult and moult stages showed no significant difference in nutrient composition. Although the cuticle had a high DM (97.5%), that did not cause any significant difference between the DM of the moult and pre-moult, because it is only a negligible part of the total wet weight. With the increased DM, the crude protein content and the chitin content, fibre, ash content, and NFE increased, while the fat content decreased. The DM, CF, and chitin contents of pupae are significantly lower than those of the pre-moult and moult stages. Our results show that it is the size and not the age that has a positive effect on the nutrient composition of YM.
