Megjegyzések:Due to the legislation of antibiotic usage, natural substances are required for application in the poultry industry. Because of their potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, carotenoids are great sources. Capsanthin, a major carotenoid giving the red color of pepper, is a promising feed additive, as it can reduce chronic inflammation. This study was conducted to determine the effects of capsanthin supplementation at 80 mg kg?1 in feed on the immune response of broiler chickens under Escherichia coli O55:B5 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Ross 308 male broilers were divided into treatments: control (basal diet) and feedsupplemented groups. At 42 d of age, chickens were weighed and then challenged with 1 mg LPS per kilogram of body weight intraperitoneally. Four hours after injection, birds were euthanized, and then spleen and blood samples were collected. Capsanthin supplement at 80 mg kg?1 did not change the growth parameters and the relative spleen weight. LPS immunization resulted in higher splenic interleukin-1? (IL-1?), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interferon-? (IFN-? ) mRNA expressions. Capsanthin addition reached lower gene expression levels of IL-6 and IFN-? compared to the LPS-injected birds. At plasma level, dietary capsanthin resulted in lower IL-1? and IL-6 levels. These results may indicate the potential anti-inflammatory effect of capsanthin supplementation in broiler chickens.

Megjegyzések:In pig nutrition, there are some periods when natural alternatives to antibiotics are more required, such as during suckling and weaning. Fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) are a group of prebiotics applied as feed ingredients in animal nutrition since their positive effects on growth performance, immunological parameters, intestinal microbiota, and gut morphology are reported. Accordingly, FOS may be candidate molecules to improve the mentioned properties in pigs. Previous studies defined FOS as inhibiting the activity of pathogens and increasing the colonization of beneficial bacteria in the gut, although metabolites of FOS decreased the intestinal pH value. Beneficial effects on digestive-enzyme activities and on protein digestion were determined in some studies. All of the three types of FOS (inulin, oligomeric fructans, and short-chain FOSs) promoted the microbial composition of the gut by increasing the colonizations of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Prevotella genus. FOS also affected the immune response directly and indirectly and increased vaccine-specific IgA, serum IgG, and IgE levels. Moreover, FOS enhanced the activation of T cells and altered the secretions of some cytokines. Levels of vaccine-specific IgG could not be increased after FOS supplements. In most cases, FOS modified intestinal morphological parameters, such as longer villi, villus-height-to-crypt-depth ratio, and thicker mucosa, which could suggest better absorptive functions. Results are contradictory on growth performance, which might be influenced by the chemical structure, the duration, and the dose of FOS, so further studies are required. This review aims to gather information regarding immunological, antimicrobial, intestine morphological, and growth performance properties of fructooligosaccharides in pigs.

Megjegyzések:The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of liquid milk supplement on litter performance (weight development of the piglets, weaning weight and mortality) and on sow back-fat thickness change during the suckling period. Data were collected from 150 litters, with the weight of a total of 1709 piglets measured at birth, at 14 days of age and at weaning (28 days), respectively. Sow (n D 150) back-fat depth was measured the day before farrowing, 14 days after farrowing and at weaning. In the control group (n D 363), the piglets were suckled and got pre-starter feed from day 10. In the four experimental groups (MS1; MS2; MS2 and MS4; n D 1346), the piglets received additional milk replacer in various concentrations from the 10th day of life. While there were no significant differences in birth weight between the control and experimental groups, we did find significant differences between the 14-day weights and weaning weights. The milk supplement significantly reduced mortality compared to the control (11.6 vs. 4.9; 5.9, 8.9; 8.3 %). However, there were no statistically significant differences between litter homogeneity data, based on the CV% of piglet weight. Three experimental groups (MS1, MS2 and MS4) were more homogenous compared to the control group at weaning (25.3 vs. 20.9; 20.3; 20.3 CV%). Based on the examination of sow back-fat thickness reduction, there were significant differences between the control (C) and MS3 groups (7.61 vs. 5.57mm reduction, P < 0.05) during the suckling period. These results demonstrate the advantage of milk replacer on weaning weight. Litter homogeneity, piglet mortality and back-fat thickness of the sows were affected by providing milk replacer to the piglets during the suckling period.

Megjegyzések:Indigenous pigs are essential domestic animals for rural life and meat supply in Laos, especiallyfor ethnic people in remote areas. Northern provinces have the most numerous indigenous pig populations, i.e.covering 84 % of the total pig population. This study was conducted in northern Laos, where 164 pig-raisinghouseholds, 325 sows and 1246 piglets were included. The study aimed to observe the general trend of change inindigenous pig utilization and the altered reproductive performance regarding village location and rearing sys-tems. The semi-structured questionnaires were a key tool for gathering data required through personal interviewsand field observations. Two types of indigenous Lao pig breeds (locally named Moo Lath and Moo Hmong) werefound in study areas. The village locations were not influencing on reproductive performance of indigenous Laopigs. Larger litter size and birth weight (P <0.004?0.000) was found in the second cluster (15 to 30 km awayfrom downtown) with an average of 8.24 heads and 0.88 kg, while the first (<15 km) and third (>30 km) clus-ters had 7.72 versus 7.12 heads, and 0.70 versus 0.63 kg, respectively. Conversely, the second cluster had lowerlitter per year (P <0.001) by 1.04, compared to 1.38 for the first and third clusters. The free-scavenging rear-ing system (FRS) had a higher litter size (8.5) than the confinement (CRS) and semi-scavenge (SRS) rearingsystem (7.36 versus 7.54). The FRS had a marginally smaller litter per year (0.87) that differed from the CRSand SRS (1.45 and 1.41). The CRS had a shorter suckling period (2.38 months) with a lower weaning weight(6.74 kg), while the FRS and SRS had longer (2.72 versus 2.8 months) and higher weaning weight (7.76 and7.57 kg). The mortality before weaning was 15 %, and no difference was found related to the villages' locationor rearing systems (P >0.070 versus 0.839). Around 56 % of the piglet's deaths were due to poor managementthat caused piglets to be crushed/injured by sow or starvation. More than 54 % of farmers did not keep sows inpens before the farrowing, and 53 % of sows gave birth near forests. In conclusion, the village locations and rear-ing systems did not influence the reproductive performance of indigenous pigs in northern Laos. However, pre-and post-farrowing management had a strong effect on it. During the whole study, we took into considerationthe successful example of Hungarian Mangalica pig, which could find a proper new role in the global premiummarkets. Our results suggest that similar complex semi-intensive farm operations as indigenous Mangalica pigfarms in Hungary should be a great option for introducing and adapting to improve indigenous pig performancein Laos.
