Cím:Haematological parameters of Hungarian farmed ostriches / Lili Dóra Brassó, István Komlósi, James Kachungwa Lugata,Zsófia Rózsáné Várszegi, Péter Massányi, Renáta Knop
Dátum:2023
ISSN:0375-1589
Megjegyzések:The analysis of haematological parameters is of great importance from a diagnostic point of view and is important on a global scale as well. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of the month, farm, bird age, and sex on blood haematology values and to make a reference range for diagnostic purposes for ostriches. Blood samples were taken during the slaughter of the birds in October and November, 2021 and in May and June, 2022. In total, 22 females and 33 males aged between 8 and 60 months from three farms in eastern Hungary were included in the evaluation. Temperature and humidity data were also collected in the indicated months. The month, farm, and age of birds strongly influenced the haematology values. The white blood cell count (WBC) was the highest in June and the mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) was the lowest in May. Farm "B" differed from the two other farms in the mean cell volume (MCV), expressing the lowest mean cell value. For the 8-10- and 15-17-monthold birds, the red blood cell count (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), and haematocrit (HCT) showed lower values compared to the 11-13- and 48-60-month-old birds. The white blood cell count (WBC), mid-cell count (MID#), and granulocyte count (GRAN#) were the highest for the 8-10- and 11-13-month old age groups; the mean cell volume (MCV) was the highest for the 48-60-month-olds. Differences could not be explained by the weather conditions. Contrary to the literature, birds on farms using probiotics did not always show higher haematological values. To draw more precise conclusions, diagnostic and serum chemical analyses should also be performed in the future.

Cím:Study of LGB gene polymorphisms of small ruminants reared in Eastern Europe / Kusza Szilvia, Daniela Elena Ilie, Maria Sauer, Nagy Krisztina, Traian Stefan Atanasiu, Dinu Gavojdian
Dátum:2018
ISSN:1212-1819
Megjegyzések:The objectives of the current research were: (i) to determine the allele and genotype frequencies of the LGB gene in the sheep and goat breeds reared in Eastern Europe; (ii) to implement a comparative study in order to evaluate the milk production potential and efficiency of the main sheep and goat dairy breeds reared in Romania; (iii) to test the genetic basis and feasibility of introducing the molecular-marker assisted selection for this trait into future breeding schemes designed for small ruminants. Totally 731 purebred unrelated sheep (Turcana: 111, Racka: 98, Tsigai: 79, Karakul of Botosani: 60, Transylvanian Merino: 77) and goats (Carpatina: 82, Banat's White: 73, Saanen: 74, French Alpine: 77) were sampled and genotyped for the earlier detected alleles. The frequencies of A (0.44?0.53) and B (0.42?0.51) alleles of LGB gene were generally equal, while the C allele incidence was significantly lower for all sheep breeds studied. A relatively low or missing incidence of the C allele and no BC genotype were detected in the studied sheep breeds. All studied sheep breeds were in Hardy?Weinberg equilibrium. Gene homozygosity was lower than gene heterozygosity, with the effective allele numbers ranging from 2.00 (Transylvanian Merino) to 2.23 (Tsigai). Two alleles (A and B) and two genotypes (AA and AB) were detected in the four goat breeds studied. Allele A was the most frequent allele found in all breeds (0.57?0.68), while AB genotype had the highest frequency. Gene homozygosity was higher than gene heterozygosity, while the effective allele numbers varied between 1.76 (Banat's White) and 1.96 (Carpatina). The frequency of alleles and genotypes was similar to that reported in other Eastern sheep and goat breeds, however polymorphism has not been studied yet among these breeds in such a high number in Romania. An association study between single nucleotide polymorphisms and milk production traits should follow.

Cím:The nurse sow system - A natural process of handling large litters: A review / Joab Malanda Osotsi, Gabriella Novotni-Danko, Peter Balogh
Dátum:2024
ISSN:1212-1819
Megjegyzések:Reproductive performance in pig production has gained genetic momentum resulting in large litters. Several strategies have been used to raise the number of piglets to address the challenge of a large litter size. This review provides a rationale for employing the nurse sow system as a biological way of handling large litters, exploring its step-by-step processes and its selected impacts. By exposing these steps, pig farmers will use the information to pinpoint their weak points in the chain and customize the procedures to meet their farm-specific goals for improved productivity. The nurse sow system helps to maximize pre-weaning survival by boosting the overall worth of low birth weight piglets. When piglets weaned per sow/year are used as a performance benchmark, nurse sows weaning double litters become economically advantageous. Extended time in lactation for nurse sows gives them an ample time for their uterus to involute before the next pregnancy. However, nurse sows lose their body reserves reflected in backfat thickness from high milk production. Prolonged confinement in lactation deteriorates the physical condition of nurse sows, resulting in leg ulcers and teat damage. Additionally, piglets are more distressed when taken away from their biological sow to a new sow.

Cím:Genetic analysis of the Hungarian population of endangered Hucul horses / Enikő Somogyvári, János Posta, Sándor Mihók
Dátum:2018
ISSN:1212-1819
Megjegyzések:The population genetic evaluation of the Hungarian Hucul horse population was performed based on pedigree records. Herd book data of registered Hucul horses available up to 2016 were analysed using ENDOG (Gutierrez and Goyache 2005) and POPREP (Groeneveld et al. 2009) on the whole population (WP) as well as on the reference stock (RS) (breeding stock registered in 2016). Inbreeding coefficients were 5.57% (WP) and 7.18% (RS). Average relatedness was 10.39% in WP and higher in RS (12.67%). Effective population size was 52.32. Generation interval was 13.01 years for WP and 10.99 years for RS. The values for equivalent complete generations were 6.07 and 8.75, for the maximum number of generations 14.11 and 19.16, and for the number of full generations traced 3.77 and 5.50 for WP and RS, respectively. The effective number of founders (fe) was 23 both for WP and RS. The effective number of ancestors (fa) was 20 in WP and lower in RS (16). The fa/fe ratio was 0.869 in WP and 0.696 in RS. Founder genome equivalent (fg) was 9.618 in WP and 5.790 in RS. The fg/fe ratio was 0.481 in WP and 0.361 in RS. The study revealed that both the inbreeding coefficient and the average relatedness were high. The above mentioned ratios indicated loss of genetic diversity in the Hungarian Hucul population

Cím:Effect of dietary energy source on the plasma parameters of equine athletes trained in a deep water aqua treadmill / Vincze Anikó, Szabó Csaba, Bakos Zoltán, Szabó Viola, Veres Sándor, Ütő Dániel, Hevesi Ákos
Dátum:2016
ISSN:1828-051X
Megjegyzések:The aim of the study was to test the effect of different dietary energy sources on several blood biochemical parameters on aqua treadmill trained show jumpers. Four horses in latin square arrangements consumed identical amounts of meadow hay, and four concentrates differing mainly in their energy source (control, starch from oat, oil from sunflower and sugar from sugar beet molasses) but providing the same amount of energy. One experimental period consisted of a 10 day adaptation and 4 day test period involving deep water aqua treadmill training. Blood samples were taken during and after the last aqua treadmill training and lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose and triglycerides levels were determined from the plasma. The different dietary energy sources resulted in similar plasma lactate levels. The increased starch content of the feed resulted in significantly lower (p<0.05) creatine kinase level at the end of the first walking section of aqua training. This result appeared later as a tendency (p<=0.1). Horses fed sunflower oil as a main energy source had higher aspartate aminotransferase level after two hours of the aqua training. The plasma triglyceride concentration in the sunflower oil group tended (p<0.1) to be lower at the end of aqua training; while one hour after the training it was significantly lower. The elevated level of creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase indicates that lactate does not correctly reflect the strenuousness of the aqua training. The dietary energy source modifies the metabolic response to aqua training, even if it is not considerable.
