Megjegyzések:Mismatch negativity (MMN; auditory and visual) is considered as a brain electric/magnetic index of events deviating from regular ones within sequences of events. The underlying process is automatic (does not require attentional processes). MMN is supposed to be an ♭error signal' elicited by the difference between expected and unexpected events. Emergence of the error signal is a consequence of the comparison between the memory representations of the standard and deviant events. However, event-related potential (ERP) difference between deviant and the standard can be attributed to effect of refractoriness/habituation/stimulus specific adaptation (SSA) of the standard-related ERP. A method for separating memory-related mismatch processes and the SSA-related ERP difference is the equal probability control (ERP difference between deviant-related events and events with equally low probability from sequences without high-probability events). In the visual modality this method provided equivocal results. In some studies the deviant minus control difference was similar to the deviant minus standard difference, in other studies only the earlier part of the negativity was abolished, and in our recent experiment orientation-related visual MMN was fully abolished by the equal probability control (and also by the related cascade control). At the same time, results of a considerable number of studies cannot be explained as refractoriness effect. Interestingly, whereas in the field of (auditory and visual) MMNSSA is considered as a ♭trivial' physiological effect, in other fields of neuroimaging SSA is considered as the most valid index of memory acquisition. Furthermore, in a related paradigm, an adaptor (sometimes a longer stimulus) is followed by a test stimulus. Test stimuli identical (or related) to the adaptor elicit smaller ERP activity than a different test stimuli. In our recent study orientation differences were investigated both in mismatch and adaptation paradigms. Visual MMN and the adaptation-related difference were fairly similar, showing related underlying processes. On the basis of such set of results we propose a sequence of processes. (1)SSE-related deviant-standard difference is related to the acquisition of memory-specific processes. Being an effect on the standard, this effect is missing in the equal probability condition. Memory acquisition does not necessarily require repeated presentation (like in oddball sequences). (2)A consequence of mismatch process (error signal) is indicated by the part of deviant minus standard ERP difference which is insensitive to the equal probability control. This effect is connected to the deviant stimuli.

Megjegyzések:The possibility of reactivation of the memory representation underlying visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) was investigated in a modified passive roving-standard paradigm. Stimuli (arrays of Ga?bor patches) were presented in sequences with blank interval between the sequences. The first member of each sequence was identical to the standard of the previous sequence, while the second stimulus had differentorientation therefore the second stimulus was considered as deviant. In a control condition the stimuli of the previous sequence had randomorientations. Event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to the deviants were compared to ERPs in response to the (physically identical) secondstimulus of the control sequences. The comparison showed emergence of a positive component at an early (98?132 ms) latency range elicited by deviants. This component is interpreted as an index of increased sensitivity to rare changes in sequences dominated by identical stimuli rather than a component specific to violation of sequential regularity. Consequently, contrary to the findings in the auditory modality, the first stimulus of the sequence did not reactivate the memory representation underlying the vMMN, since subsequent deviant elicited no vMMN.
