Megjegyzések:The article investigates the news, reports, relations, dispatches, letters that reached the West on the Mongol Invasion of 1241 in Hungary and (partly) Poland. It also wishes to explore how, in what way the Christian princes reacted to the increasing number of exhortations to take up arms in the kingdoms at the mercy of the Infidel. I am giving an overview of what pieces and kinds of information were transferred, mainly to Germany, France and England, and in what ways, through what kind of channels. How the Western courts were notified by personally touched princes, like Otto, Duke of Braunschweig, or Wenceslas I, King of Bohemia. How the news arrived at Paris or London throughout the wide network of the church, especially the Mendicant Orders, or, some individually concerned prelates, e.g. the Archbishop of Magdeburg. What and when did the West know in fact of the Tatars' devastation in Hungary and Silesia? Who were the ones who did take in seriously from the outset, and took the defence efforts in their own hands, particularly since Pope Gregory IX died, and Emperor Frederick II was engaged in warring his Guelph adversaries in Italy? It is seen how some pillars of the crusading zeal, the Duke of Brabant or Henry Raspe made sacrifices on the altar of the negotium Christi. The study seeks to re-interpret the report Henry II, Duke of Brabant received in March. It has been long held in Hungarian historiography that the letter was written by Hermann, Landgrave of Thuringia, which, however, as the article proves, is absolutely out of the question, since Hermann had died by that time, and the real writer if Henry Raspe, the new Landgrave. The article also wishes to give new insights into the Mongols' fights around Vienna and Wiener Neustadt. The evidence based on Yvo of Narbonne's letter to the Archbishop of Bordeaux is to be seen critically. It is without doubt that neither Wenceslas I, King of Bohemia, nor Bernard of Sponheim, Duke of Carinthia, nor Berthold of Merania, Patriarch of Aquileia, nor at all Hermann VI, Margrave of Baden was in fact involved personally in the war effort of Frederick, Duke of Austria. It has been formerly held that Western sources touched the devastation in Hungary rather laconically and the mostly brief accounts signify that the West was only slightly interested about a crusade against the Mongols. The information that reached the West has not been valued meaningful. Nevertheless, beyond narrative evidence, investigating a larger range of sources I believe the picture is much more complex. Through the wider flow of information, a broader scope of channels, correspondence, accounts, reports etc. it seems that there princes and ecclesiastics who showed a real concern about the Mongol threat and were in fact aware of the weight of the danger that Western Europe might face. Matthew Paris was not only a unique, unrivalled "diver of news" but did precious service to the anti-Mongol crusading effort. Or, the Mendicants, or, Siegfried, Archbishop of Mainz made all effort to have the wider public know of the real, oncoming threat.

Megjegyzések:The paper investigates the narrative sources written in Medieval Austria, which contain some information about the Mongol invasion of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241 and 1242. Examining these sources, we have focused on the information on the strength of the invading Mongol army, the role of the Cumans, the military operations in Hungary, the military and political activity of Duke Frederick II (the Quarrelsome) of Austria, as well the aftermath of the Mongol invasion in Hungary. The analysis of the primary sources and the secondary literature indicates that the Medieval Austrian narrative sources provide an excellent material on the Mongol invasion. The annals of the Cistercian abbey of Heiligenkreuz (Lower Austria), in particular, due to its possible connection with Hungarian monasteries, are quite detailed and well-informed, even if they are inaccurate in some details. That is why the Annals of Heiligenkreuz were often used also by historians of later generations. Our research also indicates that the sources from the Babenberg territories and Salzburg are extremely honest, when regarding the dishonorable military and political actions taken by Duke Frederick II of Austria, as he had ordered to take King Béla IV of Hungary prisoner, or as he probably might have been involved in the assassination of Köten, Khan of the Cumans. A salient feature of these narratives is the lack of information on the warfare, habits and customs of the Mongols, compared to the rich descriptions of Thomas of Spalato or Matthew of Paris
