ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:Video techniques are broadly used in the field of behaviour sciences, thus there is an increasing interest in softwares that simplify the processing of recordings. One of the difficulties is that observed objects can exhibit a wide variety of behaviours that cannot usually be recognized and recorded automatically, therefore the video has to be watched and analysed manually by humans. We have developed a simple, open-source and free command-line video analysis software, that helps the processing of observation sessions from recordings and helps to verify the processed events.

Dátum:2019
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:We have studied how individual decisions about timing of breeding and nest location affected the reproductive success of rooks by tracing the formation of a rook breeding colony in Hortobágy NP (Hungary), during the breeding season in 1999. We have found that birds who built nests earlier also laid eggs earlier and had larger clutch size but had no more offspring than late nesters. Distance of the nest from the centre or edge of the colony did not affect the reproductive success though rooks generally settled closer to the centre and further from the edge than it can be expected by assuming random distribution. The colony showed high breeding synchrony since date of egg laying varied less than date of nesting but synchrony did not influence the breeding success. Hatchling's survival rate and number of offspring increased with local nest density and rooks clustered their nests more than it can be expected by random settlement. Nest sites of early and late nesters did not differ regarding the distance from the centre or the edge of the colony but late nesters chose nest sites in more densely populated regions. The results indicate that individuals may follow different strategies to increase their reproductive success. It is prospectively advantageous to build the nest and lay eggs earlier, in turn, it's worth nesting in already more densely nested areas for late beginners. We suggest that a game theoretical approach may be useful if we try to understand the adaptive significance of colonial breeding.

Dátum:2017
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:Craniophora ligustri is the most widely distributed species within the genus Craniophora. We used geometric morphometry to assess the shape variation of male valvae in the Western Palaearctic and Russian Far East populations of C. ligustri including the subspecies C. l.carbolucana and C. l. hyrcanica. Outlines were transformed using Hangle Fourier method followed by shape analyses using multivariate statistics (CVA, UPGMA). Based on the results the Far Eastern sample is clearly separated from the Western Palaearctic populations. The West Palaearctic samples were split to two demes, a Northern and a Southern one. The probable refugia of the Southern deme may have extended from South Italy, the Balkan Peninsula across the Euxinic coast of Asia Minor to the Talysh and Northern Iran (Hyrcanian part of Elburs Mts), while the refugia of the Northern deme have been supposedly extra-Mediterranean.

Cím:Morphological patterns of a nightingale population in a contact zone of Luscinia megarhynchos and L. luscinia / Kováts, D., Végvári, Z., Varga, Z.
Dátum:2013
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:We investigated morphological characteristics of a population in a contact zone of two sister species of nightingales in North-East Hungary. The aim of our study was to analyse and interpret the current morphological patterns of a nightingale population in three populations, called Bódva, Tiszalúc-Bárányszeg and Tiszabercel-Tiszatelek. The research was carried out between 2006 and 2010 at the northern sites of rivers Tisza, and Bódva, where 63 nightingales were examined altogether. The three populations were compared with each other for several morphological characteristics. The populations were significantly different in wing-pointedness, wing-symmetry and body mass and, although marginally, in tail length. Based on the combination of two morphological traits (the relative length of the short first primary and the proportion of length of the second and fourth primary),seven (11.1%) of all investigated birds were identified as interspecific hybrids. In conclusion, we suggest a possible interspecific hybridization between the two nightingale species in the studied area. We assume that the modification in the structure of riverine vegetation might be one of the reasons of the relatively high proportion of hybrid individuals.

Cím:Spatial distribution of carabids along grass-forest transects / T. Magura, B. Tóthmérész, T. Molnár
Dátum:2000
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:Spatial distribution of ground-beetles and associations between carabids and environmental variables were studied in grass-forest transects in the Aggtelek National Park in Hungary. The carabid assemblages of the grass, the forest edge and the forest interior can be separated from each other by principal coordinates analysis, suggesting that all habitats have a characteristic and distinct species composition. The collected carabid species can be divided into five groups by indicator species analysis: (1) habitat generalists, (2) forest generalists, (3) species of the grass, (4) forest edge species, and (5) forest specialists. Distributions of the eighteen most frequent carabids were generally aggregated. There were significant correlations between the carabid abundance and the following abiotic factors: relative cover of the leaf litter, the herbs, the shrubs, and the canopy layer. Biotic factors, like the abundance of the carabids' prey, and the occurrence of other carabids cr,ere also correlated significantly with the distribution of particular species at the studied spatial scale. For the eighteen most frequent species we found 7 significant positive and 4 significant negative correlations of the abundance patterns. For two species (Molops piceus (PANZER, 1793) and Pterostichus burmeiseri HEER, 1841), which are of similar size, spatial pattern and seasonal activity, we found significant negative interaction suggesting interspecific competition between them. The results stress the importance of an integration of biotic and abiotic factors in carabid ecology, and also provide an empirical approach for understanding spatial distribution of carabids.

Cím:Intersexual size and plumage differences in tree sparrows (Passer montanus) : a morphological study based on molecular sex determination / F. Mónus, K. Szabó, A. Lózsa, Z. Pénzes, Z. Barta
Dátum:2011
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:We investigated intersexual morphological differences in tree sparrows (Passer montanus), a species being considered as sexually monomorphic. Molecular sexing of the birds was performed by PCR amplification of the sex chromosome-linked CHD1 gene introns. All measured traits (body weight, wing, tail and tarsus length, bill size and the size of the black throat patch, i.e. badge hereafter) were greater in males than in females and the sex of about 90% of the individuals was correctly categorized by means of a discriminant analysis based on the morphological measurements. Nevertheless, wing length alone was equally good predictor of the sex. Other measured traits had only moderate discriminant value. Our results do not support that tree sparrows can be sexed based on the size of their badge alone. However, some of our results suggest intersexual differences in the function of the badge.

Cím:Repeatability analysis of egg shape in a wild tree sparrow (Passer montanus) population : a sensitive method for egg shape description / Mónus F., Barta Z.
Dátum:2005
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:The shape of avian eggs varies widely among and within species. To explore this variation, several methods for egg shape description were used in previous works. The simplest methods were unsuitable to detect small differences in shape of different eggs, while more elaborated methods required special equipment, since they were not generally used. In this study we present a simple method for egg shape description which incorporate quickness in the field, high sensitivity to egg shape differences and furthermore require no special equipment. The method is based on a function which describe the outline of the egg in a two dimensions co-ordinate system and outline originates from field taken photographs. The method was tested on clutches of wild living Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) population. Three out of four parameters of the function were found to be repeatable in Tree Sparrows. The eggs of repetitive clutches of females were more similar considering these egg shape parameters than eggs of different females. A simple, widely used index to describe egg shape, egg shape index was found to be far less sensitive in our repeatability analyses. The method described here may be particularly suitable to investigate intraspecific variation of egg shape.

Cím:Temporal and spatial pattern of genetic differentiation in Isophya kraussi (Orthoptera: Tettigonoidea) in NE Hungary / K. Pecsenye, E. Vadkerti, Z. Varga
Dátum:2003
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:Allozyme polymorphism was studied in four samples of Isophya kraussi (BRUNNER VON WATTENWYL, 1878), a brachipterous, sedentary tettigonoid species. Three samples were collected in the Aggtelek Karst region (Haragistya 1998, Mogyoróskuti meadows 1999 and 2001) and one in the Zemplén Mts (Gyertyánkúti meadows 1998-1999). Enzyme polymorphism was investigated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. All 10 scorable loci (Aldox, Est, Got, aGpdh, Hk, Idh, Mdh, Me, Pgi and Pgm) had alternative alleles in at least one sample. We detected a high level of polymorphism. On average, more than 60% of the investigated loci were polymorphic and the average number of alleles was about 2.1. The average heterozygote frequency was also high approximately 0.19. Large FIT values indicated a considerable level of genetic variation as well. The larger part of the total variation was explained by the within sample component and a relatively smaller portion of it was attributable to the between sample component. Many of the FIS values were positive indicating some heterozygote deficiency. In the analysis of spatial variation, we obtained highly significant FST values, which suggested strong genetic differentiation between the local populations. In contrast, the FST value calculated in the temporal analysis of variation was not significant. The average value of Nei's genetic distances between pairs of samples of geographically distinct populations was 0.071 while, that estimated within the Mogyoróskút population was 0.027. Thus, the results of all analyses indicated a higher level of differentiation among the geographically distinct populations than between the two samples collected in a single population in different years. The results of the PCA analyses fully confirmed those obtained in other analyses.

Dátum:2017
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:In this study we attempted to isolate 13 additional microsatellites from the beetle Lethrus apterus and then to use them to screen for polymorphisms in 35 specimens collected from the northern Hungarian mountains. The newly developed markers presented in this paper are polymorphic, including between two and seven detected alleles per locus. The observed and expected heterozygosity per locus ranged between 0.057 and 0.686 and between 0.056 and 0.756, respectively, while two loci showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These deviations can be explained by the presence of null alleles. All loci cross-amplified in at least two out of four congeneric Lethrus species (L. bituberculatus, L. scoparius, L. strymonensis and L. perun). The polymorphic microsatellite markers we present for L. apterus will be valuable for future population genetic studies.
