Megjegyzések:There is some difficulty in the identification of adult mosquito females using the avaiable morphological keys. In these cases examination of immature stages and male genitalia is required to make correct identifications. Hower, in taxonomical and epidemological studies it is necessary to identify the species of adult females. In the present study, we measured ten morphometric characters on the wing of Culex pipiens specimens collected from five localities for measuring the stability and the variability of the characteristics within and between populations. We found that the varitions of characters were less withinthe populations than between populations, and there were significant differences among the populations. However, canonical discriminant analysis revealed no difference in the wing characters of three populations, while twopopulations were found to be slightly different.

Megjegyzések:Tata és környéke csípőszúnyog faunája egy-két szórványos adattól eltekintve gyakorlatilag alig ismert. Munkánk során ezt a hiányosságot két potenciális tenyészőhely vizsgálatával igyekeztünk mérsékelni. Az egy évesfelmérés során alkalmazott 23 mintavétel lehetővé tette a fontosabb fajok fenológiai viszonyainak tisztázását is. A fauna összetételére jellemző, hogy uralkodóak a széles elterjedésű holarktikus és az európai fajok. A dominánsfajok az Ochlerotatus cantans, O. rusticus, valamint a Culiseta annulata voltak. Más fajok (Anopheles plumbeus, Aedes cinereus, Ae. rossicus, Ae. vexans,Culex pipiens, Cx. territans, Culiseta morsitans, Ochlerotatus annulipes, O. cataphylla, O. flavescens, O. refiki, O. sticticus) csak jóval kisebb számban kerültek elő. A lárvális fajegyüttesek fenológiai viszonyai a két vizsgálttenyészőhelyen lényegesen eltértek, ami a helyi hatások és mikroklimatikus eltérések jelentőségét támasztja alá.

This monograph reports studies on the assemblages of ground- and vegetation-dwelling spiders in habitats affected by anthropogenic activities. Spiders are especially species-rich taxa, adapted to various habitats, and environmental conditions. They are predators; thus, they are vitally important in ecosystem services, controlling insect populations. Spiders are favourable taxa for ecological studies, because they are diverse and abundant, and their ecology are known. Moreover, spiders adjust rapidly to changes in abiotic and biotic environmental factors, including human disturbances like air pollution, urbanization, habitat fragmentation, and grazing. Thus, they are especially useful indicator taxa to assess human influence on biotic communities. There are 3 studies in the first part of the monograph. The effect of immission load and the urbanization on spider assemblages are studied. These studies revealed that urbanization and immission load decreased species richness and diversity of spider assemblages as the intensity of disturbance and the amount of pollutants increased from the less disturbed habitats towards the strongly disturbed ones. In the first study it was demonstrated that immission load not influenced significantly the spiders living on or under tree`s bark, while foliage-dwellers were sensitive to immission. In the urbanization studies it was pointed out that overall species richness was not a suitable indicator of human disturbance; therefore, species with various ecological demands should be analyzed separately. Ignoring ecological demands of the species masked the real effects of urbanization. Also, there are 3 studies in the second part of the monograph. The effect of local and landscape-level factors on spider assemblages of managed (grazed) and unmanaged sandy grassland fragments in Kiskunság and Nyírség region were studied. It was demonstrated that grazing intensity (as local factor) was the most important factor influencing vegetation-dwelling spiders, while both local and landscape-level factors were important drivers in shaping ground-dwelling spiders. It was also pointed out that in stable, unmanaged grasslands local factors were more important than landscape-level factors in shaping ground-dwelling spider assemblages.

Megjegyzések:To examine the impact of urbanisation on arthropod biodiversity, carabid (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages were studied over 2 years along a rural-urban gradient representing increasing levels of human disturbance. Carabids were collected by pitfall trapping during their whole activity period in lowland oak forest patches in and near the city of Debrecen, Eastern Hungary, over two seasons (2001?2002). Carabid activity density was significantly higher in the rural than in the two other areas, but there was no significant difference in species richness (measured as mean number of species caught/trap). The proportion of forest specialists significantly decreased from the rural towards the urban area, and the proportion of forest specialist species was significantly higher in the rural and suburban areas than in the urban one. In contrast, the relative activity density of generalist species significantly increased along the rural?urban gradient. Both the relative number of openhabitat species and their activity density were significantly higher in the urban forest fragments than in the suburban and rural ones. The patterns found were consistent between the 2 years. Multidimensional scaling indicated pronounced changes in species composition along the gradient; the assemblages in urban forest fragments were more variable than in the other areas. A large proportion of the variation in overall activity density, species richness and the proportion of carabids with different habitat affinities could be explained by structural habitat variables (percentage cover by canopy, leaf litter, herbs and decaying wood), and prey availability.
