Megjegyzések:Climate change is putting increasing pressure on flowing waters. Drastic water level fluctuations in rivers or drying up of small and medium-sized streams all contribute to the biodiversity crisis threatening freshwater ecosystems. Benthic diatoms are important elements of biofilm in small streams. However, knowledge on the relationship between benthic diatoms and flow intermittence is incomplete, especially in regions recently impacted by recurrent drying. Thus, we investigated benthic diatom flora of small intermittent, hilly streams in the warm temperate region of Europe (the Pannonian Ecoregion). Our hypotheses were addressed to compositional changes, biodiversity loss and diatom-based ecological assessment. The results revealed clear flow intermittence- induced differences in taxa and trait composition of diatoms. Altogether six species for the dry phase and three species in the aquatic phase were identified as indicative ones by using indicator value analyses. In contrast to water regime induced changes in assemblages, there was a seasonal overlap in taxa and trait composition. During the study period, the drying up of streams did not result in significant biodiversity loss either at taxa or trait levels. Functional dispersion, however, reduced significantly by summer. Overall, neither the hydrological regime nor seasonal changes had a significant effect on diatom-based quality indices, except for the Rott trophic index (TID index). The TID index values were significantly lower in dry phases than in aquatic ones. These results suggested that the drying up of streams has a very complex influence on benthic diatoms. It seems that taxonomical and functional redundancy can reduce the negative impact of short-time flow intermittence on assemblages. As a practical benefit, the results are the first to support the use of diatom-based quality indices in the assessment of flow intermittence in the temperate region.

Megjegyzések:Himantoglossum adriaticum H. Baumann is a long-lived perennial orchid with an adriato-mediterranean distribution. The species-level separation of this species from the more geographically widespread H. hircinum has only recently been confirmed via a combination of molecular and morphometric techniques, which are further developed here. To provide a comprehensive overview of its autecology we integrated previously published information with extensive unpublished data derived mainly from populations in the Keszthely Hills of Hungary. In this paper we assess the distribution, habitat preferences, life history and seed germination (ex situ and in situ) of H. adriaticum, with special emphasis on its reproductive biology.

Megjegyzések:Background: Land-use is a major driver of changes in biodiversity worldwide, but studies have overwhelmingly focused on above-ground taxa: the efects on soil biodiversity are less well known, despite the importance of soil organisms in ecosystem functioning. We modelled data from a global biodiversity database to compare how the abundance of soil-dwelling and above-ground organisms responded to land use and soil properties. Results: We found that land use afects overall abundance diferently in soil and above-ground assemblages. The abundance of soil organisms was markedly lower in cropland and plantation habitats than in primary vegetation and pasture. Soil properties infuenced the abundance of soil biota in ways that difered among land uses, suggesting they shape both abundance and its response to land use. Conclusions: Our results caution against assuming models or indicators derived from above-ground data can apply to soil assemblages and highlight the potential value of incorporating soil properties into biodiversity models.

Megjegyzések:It is a truism in ecology that environmental heterogeneity increases diversity. Supporting field studies are mostly concerned with a large-scale topographic heterogeneity, ranging from a couple of metres to landscape-scale gradients. To test the role of fine-scale micro-topography on plant diversity, we studied the initial vegetation of recently filled (1-year-old), and established vegetation on old (7-year-old) soil-filled channels in an alkali landscape, East-Hungary. We hypothesised that (i) recently filled channels are characterised by a high cover of ruderal species and high species diversity and (ii) high micro-topographic heterogeneity increases the diversity of species and plant strategy types (mixed C-S-R categories) in early stages but later on this effect diminishes. We found that diversity of species and plant strategy types was higher in recently filled channels compared to old filled channels. Micro-topographic heterogeneity had no effect on the studied vegetation parameters in recently filled channels. Conversely, in old filled channels higher micro-topographic heterogeneity resulted in higher diversity and lower cover of the dominant grass Festuca pseudovina. Higher micro-topographic heterogeneity resulted in increased ruderality and decreased stress-tolerance, but it did not increase the diversity of plant strategy types. In contrast with former studies, we found that a couple of centimetres of micro-topographic heterogeneity had no effect on vegetation in recently filled channels, but supported a high diversity in old filled channels. An important practical implication of our study is that in grassland restoration projects, micro-topographic heterogeneity has a crucial role in sustaining biodiversity.

Megjegyzések:Background: Burial mounds (kurgans) of Eurasian steppes are man-made habitat islands that have the potential to harbour rich plant diversity due to micro-habitats associated with their topography. Aims: We assessed whether kurgan micro-habitats harboured different species pools and functional groups from those found on the surrounding steppes. In addition, we asked if these mounds were affected by different grazing intensities from those on the surrounding vegetation. Methods: We surveyed kurgan micro-habitats (northern and southern slopes, surrounding ditch) and adjacent steppe plains in non-grazed, moderately grazed and heavily grazed sites in northern Kazakhstan. We analysed differences in species composition of four habitats under three grazing regimes using Generalised Linear Mixed Models, PCA ordination and indicator species analysis. Results: Kurgan micro-habitats had diverse vegetation and supported the co-existence of plant species with different environmental needs. We identified 16 steppe specialists confined to kurgan micro-habitats. Steppe vegetation was welladapted to extensive grazing, although heavy grazing supported ruderals and a decline in steppe specialists. There was a significant interaction between grazing intensity and habitat type: heavy grazing supported ruderals and suppressed steppe specialists especially on the slopes. Conclusions: We highlighted that kurgans play an important role as maintaining high plant diversity locally in extensive steppe plains in Central-Asia by increasing environmental heterogeneity and supporting specialist species confined to these micro-habitats.

Megjegyzések:Agricultural intensification threatens grasslands worldwideand the restoration of grasslands from arable lands canat least partially counter this threat. We studied grasslandrestoration by following early successional changesof arthropod assemblages (spiders, Araneae; true bugs,Heteroptera; orthopterans, Orthoptera; and ground beetles, arable lands and native grasslands as two ends of thesuccession timescale. To examine the changes in speciescomposition among the habitat types, we used habitat affinityindices based on fidelity and/or specificity of the species. We found that the number of species did not differ betweenhabitat types, while species composition changed markedlywith time. Species richness was thus not adequate todetect favorable changes after grassland restoration. Habitataffinity indices, on the other hand, were useful to detectcompositional changes caused by the increasing numbersof species characteristic of target grasslands as early asthe second year after restoration. Habitat affinity indicesare easy-to-use, easy-to-interpret measures of restorationsuccess; therefore, we recommend their use as measurescomplementary to species richness and simple similarity. Our results show that sowing low-diversity seed mixturefollowed by mowing and grazing can be particularly successfulin grassland restoration in time periods as short as2 years.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2351-9894
Megjegyzések:The coniferous shrub species Juniperus sabina (savin) is widespread in mountainous regions of Eurasia. The species produces large amounts of fire-prone plant mass in its habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the effect that burning of savin shrubs has on the soil seed bank (SSB), the microbial respiration and the amount of organic matter under its canopy. In each of three sampling areas, four individuals of savin were randomly selected. Under each of these individuals and on adjacent herbaceous control patches, soil samples were taken from 0 to 5 cm and 5-10 cm depths for SSB, biological and chemical analyses. The sampling was repeated after burning the canopy. We found that the immediate effects of burning on the SSB and on the biological and chemical soil parameters were significantly negative. In particular, SSB density, magnitude of microbial respiration and amount of organic matter were significantly decreased after savin canopy burning in 0-5 cm depth, while these changes were less pronounced on the burned herbaceous patches. Hence the restoration of gaps created by burning savin cannot rely on the SSB. Furthermore, alkalization of the soil and decreased soil quality caused by savin burning might hamper the vegetation recovery even in the medium to long run.

Megjegyzések:In intensively used landscapes remnant grassland fragments are often restricted to places unsuitable for agricultural cultivation. Such refuges are the ancient burial mounds called 'kurgans', which are typical landscape elements of the Eurasian steppe and forest steppe zone. Due to their hill-like shape, loose soil structure and undisturbed status kurgans provide proper habitats for burrowing mammals. Accordingly, grassland vegetation on kurgans is often exposed to bioturbation, which can influence the habitat structure and plant species pool. In our study we explored the effect of fox burrows and landscape context on the habitat properties and vegetation composition of small landscape elements, using kurgans as model habitats. We surveyed the vegetation of fox burrows and that of the surrounding grassland on five kurgans situated in cleared landscapes surrounded by arable lands, and five kurgans in complex landscapes surrounded by grazed grasslands. We recorded the percentage cover of vascular plants, the amount of litter and soil moisture content in twelve 0.5m?0.5m plots per kurgan, in a total of 120 plots. We found that foxes considerably transformed habitat conditions and created microhabitats by changing the soil nutrient availability and reducing total vegetation cover and litter. Several grassland specialist species, mostly grasses (Agropyron cristatum, Elymus hispidus and Stipa capillata) established in the newly created microhabitats, although the cover of noxious species was also considerable. We found that landscape context influenced the sort of species which could establish on kurgans by affecting the available species pool and soil moisture. Our results revealed that foxes act as ecosystem engineers on kurgans by transforming abiotic and biotic conditions by burrowing. Their engineering activity maintains disturbance-dependent components of dry grasslands and increases local environmental heterogeneity.

Megjegyzések:The edge effect on weevils and spiders was tested along oak forest - meadow transects using sweep-net samples at the Síkfőkút Project in Hungary. For spiders the species richness was significantly higher in the forest edge than either in the meadow or the forest interior. For weevils the species richness of the forest edge was higher than that of the meadow, but the difference was not statistically significant whereas the species richness of the forest interior was significantly lower than that of the forest edge and the meadow. The composition of the spider assemblage of the edge was more similar to the forest, while the composition of weevils in the edge was more similar to the meadow. Our results based on two invertebrate groups operating on different trophic levels suggest that there is a significant edge effect for the studied taxa resulting in higher species richness in the edge.
