Megjegyzések:The importance of cities throughout history is indisputable. Their allocation of economic, cultural and political power, their spatial organization functions are impressive, and their role in social reproduction reached a milestone in 2008, when more than half of the world's population was considered urban. Today, the urban population is still growing. Small towns are extremely diverse in terms of economic power and society, but their numbers and population base do not justify their dominance in the urban network. There have been intense waves of urbanization across Europe, with the scope of formal cities widening and the scope of functional cities closing. Grouped by population category, there are more than 7,000 small towns in Europe, almost two-thirds of the countries' urban settlements are small towns. This is particularly true in Central- and Eastern-Europe, where, due to delayed urban development, there is a combination of welfare suburbanization and urban depopulation, as well as forced-generated movements from the big cities to smaller towns. In our study, we present the main characteristics of population change in small towns in Hungary. We examine spatial and functional differences in the population dynamics of small towns. The aim of the study is to show the spatial distribution of the settlements identified by prosperous suburbs and shrinking cities by illustrating the changes in the population dynamics of the Hungarian small towns population over the last almost twenty years.

Cím:Global production networks and regional development: A case study of the Hungarian footwear Industry / Molnár Ernő
Dátum:2016
ISSN:1821-2506
Megjegyzések:The industry in East-Central Europe has integrated into global production networks in the last quarter century. Modern reindustrialization is considerably expected in the region, meanwhile it has emerged that those works leaning on cheap labour do not provide close-up perspectives in the long run: the 'upgrading' has become the main objection, namely to join the international industrial diversification. This case study aims to present the current Hungarian footwear industry. The study, based on statistics data and interviews, as well as information collected at the Union of Leather and Footwear Industry, focuses on how the participants of the sector integrate into global production networks and what are its consequences.

Cím:Border areas and educational attainment : Long-term analysis of Hungary for the period between 1960 and 2022 / János Pénzes, István Papp, Norbert Apáti, János Péter Kiss
Dátum:2023
ISSN:1821-2506
Megjegyzések:The educational indicators are an important basis for spatial researches focusing on regional development. Border areas provide special conditions for educational attainment, but the levels of aggregated results are worse in general. Different distance categories and given sections of Hungarian border areas are separated in order to detect the altering development paths of the complex educational attainment index (CEAI). This complex indicator combines the number of people with high school graduation and with diploma in the ratio of the 20 years or older population (with a weighting procedure included). Border areas are generally characterized by worse educational attainment values than the national average, but during the last more than six decades, significant convergence of data could be observed, in which the dominance of large towns is decisive. For this reason, suburbanization significantly impacts the spatial pattern of educational attainment in the border zones. Most parts of the settlements are below the national average, however general conditions are better in the case of the Austrian border section. However, the previously assumed continuous development of this border section has not been confirmed by our analysis.

Cím:Roma population in Hungary : spatial distribution and its temporal changes / Pénzes János, Pásztor István Zoltán, Tátrai Patrik, Kóti Tibor
Dátum:2019
ISSN:1821-2506
Megjegyzések:The objective of the current analysis is to discover the territorial characteristics of the Hungarian Roma population and its changes during the last almost three decades. The basis of the investigation is provided by the census datasets from 1990 and 2011 - as auto-identification - and two surveys (the so-called CIKOBI survey from 1984?1987 and the survey of the University of Debrecen from 2010-2013), ensuring the external ethnic identification. The last census gave 315,000 Roma and the recent survey resulted in approximately 876,000 Roma people in Hungary. The significant growth of the Roma population is obviously demonstrated and its regional disparities are also discovered. The most important regional characteristics came to light with weakening territorial backwardness by the ratio of Roma population living in towns is coming to the national value. However, the rapid growth of the Roma population is especially visible in the case of the districts with high ratio of Roma already during the 1980s (high values approximately doubled as well). This process is quite concentrated mostly in districts in the traditional backward areas of the country.
