Megjegyzések:In this paper we characterize sprays that are metrizable by Finsler functions of constant flag curvature. By solving a particular case of the Finsler metrizability problem, we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions that can be used to decide whether or not a given homogeneous system of second order ordinary differential equations represents the geodesic equations of a Finsler function of constant flag curvature. The conditions we provide are tensorial equations on the Jacobi endomorphism. We identify the class of homogeneous SODE where the Finsler metrizability is equivalent with the metrizability by a Finsler function of constant flag curvature.

Megjegyzések:In this paper we are investigating variational homogeneous second order differential equations by considering the question of how many different variational principles exist for a given spray. We focus our attention on h(2)-variationality; that is, the regular Lagrange function is homogeneous of degree two in the directional argument. Searching for geometric objects characterizing the degree of freedom of h(2)-variationality of a spray, we show that the holonomy distribution generated by the tangent direction to the parallel translations can be used to calculate it. As a working example, the class of isotropic sprays is considered.

Megjegyzések:This article studies the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for the special case of the geodesic flow associatedto the canonical symmetric bi-invariant connection of a Lie group. Necessary background on the differentialgeometric structure of the tangent bundle of a manifold as well as the Fröhlicher?Nijenhuis theory of derivations isintroduced briefly. The first obstructions to the inverse problem are considered in general and then as they appearin the special case of the Lie group connection. Thereafter, higher order obstructions are studied in a way that isimpossible in general. As a result a new algebraic condition on the variational multiplier is derived, that involvesthe Nijenhuis torsion of the Jacobi endomorphism. The Euclidean group of the plane is considered as a working exampleof the theory and it is shown that the geodesic system is variational by applying the Cartan?Kähler theorem.The same system is then reconsidered locally and a closed form solution for the variational multiplier is obtained.Finally some more examples are considered that point up the strengths and weaknesses of the theory.

Megjegyzések:After a careful study of the mixed curvatures of the Berwald-type (in particular, Berwald) connections, we present an axiomatic description of the so-called Yano-type Finsler connections. Using the Yano connection, we derive an intrinsic expression of Douglas' famous projective curvature tensor and we also represent it in terms of the Berwald connection. Utilizing a clever observation of Z. Shen, we show in a coordinate-free manner that a "spray manifold" is projectively equivalent to an affinely connected manifold iff its Douglas tensor vanishes. From this result we infer immediately that the vanishing of the Douglas tensor implies that the projective Weyl tensor of the Berwald connection "depends only on the position".
