Cím:Factors Associated with Quit Attempts and Quitting among Eastern Hungarian Women who Smoked at the Time of Pregnancy / Kristie L. Foley, Péter Balázs, Andrea Grenczer, Ildikó Rákóczi
Dátum:2011
ISSN:1210-7778 1803-1048
Megjegyzések:Introduction: The purpose of this research was to assess factors associated with quit attempts and successful smoking cessation among a sample of socioeconomically disadvantaged pregnant women living in Eastern Hungary. Materials and methods: In-person interviews were conducted among 201 women residing in Eastern Hungary who self-identified as occasional or regular smokers at the time they learned they were pregnant. Results: 54% of the women were smokers at the time they learned they were pregnant. Just over half tried to quit, but only 20% were successful. Factors associated with reduced likelihood of quit attempts included being a regular (vs. occasional) smoker (OR=0.36, 95% Cl 0.13-1.00) and being Roma (vs. non-Roma) (OR=0.32, 95% Cl 0.14-0.72). Women who completed high school were 71/2 times more likely to quit (OR=7.5, 95% Cl 1.68-33.2) and those who were employed were 7% times more likely to quit (OR=7.6, 95% Cl 1.88-30.35). Regular smokers were 88% less likely to quit than occasional smokers. Discussion: Smoking cessation interventions targeting pregnant women are needed in Eastern Hungary. Efforts to integrate smoking cessation into the current excellent pre-natal care and health visitor program will reach most women who are pregnant or who have given birth within the preceding 3 years.

Megjegyzések:In many European children, high levels of screen time can be found, which is associated with several adverse health outcomes. Therefore, there is a need for identifying effective intervention strategies that reduce screen time in children. A factor that may contribute to excessive screen time in children may be "co-TV viewing" (i.e., the time that parents and children spend on watching TV together), as parents often recognize the importance of limiting children's (individual) screen time, but often encourage TV viewing as a family because of its perceived benefits (e.g., educational purposes). The primary aim of this study was to investigate the (sex-specific) association between co-TV viewing and both children's and parents' screen time, and these associations were investigated across and within six European countries. In total, 10,969 parents (Meanage = 40.7 ? 5.3 years, MeanBMI = 24.4 ? 4.6) of primary school children (Meanage = 8.2 ? 1.0 years, 49.0% boys, MeanBMI = 17.3 ? 2.8) completed a questionnaire assessing co-TV viewing and screen time. Multilevel regression analyses were conducted. Across countries, positive associations were found between co-TV viewing and both children's (? = 11.85, SE = 3.69, p < 0.001) and parents' screen time (? = 14.47, SE = 4.43, p = 0.001). Similar associations were found in most (but not all) countries. The results suggest that targeting co-TV viewing might be a promising intervention strategy because of its potential to limit screen time of both children and parents.

Megjegyzések:The relationship between socioeconomic status and preventive care is an important issue in public health practice in Hungary. Our aim was to investigate the association between the socioeconomic status and the present practice of primary allergy prevention in infant feeding in Hajdú-Bihar County, Hungary. METHODS: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was performed among 3076 infants aged 0-6 months. We studied how socioeconomic status, type of settlement, allergic background of the family and skin symptoms indicative for allergy were related to primary allergy prevention in infant feeding. Prevalence odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Independent determinants of breast feeding were age [OR corresponding to one month change 0.74; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.70-0.77], the female gender (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.06-1.46), the socioeconomic status of the family (OR comparing the worst with the best category 0.63; 95% CI 0.43-0.93), and birth weight (OR comparing <1500 g to >2500 g category 0.17; 95% CI 0.07-0.41). Among supplementary nutrient users independent determinants of the use of hydrolysed infant formulae were the socioeconomic status (OR comparing the worst with the best category 0.06; 95% CI 0.01-0.27), the type of settlement (OR comparing village with town 0.48; 95% CI 0.28-0.80), history of allergy in the family (OR 2.30; 95% CI 1.28-4.11), and skin symptoms indicative of allergy (OR 3.46; 95% CI 1.96-6.14). CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic status is related to the implementation of primary allergy prevention in infant feeding.

Megjegyzések:AbstractBackground: In Hungary, the last wide-range evaluation about nutritional status of the population was completed in1988. Since then, only limited data were available. Our aim was to collect, analyze and present updated prevalence data. Methods: Anthropometric, educational and morbidity data of persons above 18 y were registered in all geographicalregions of Hungary, at primary care encounters and within community settings. Results: Data (BMI, waist circumference, educational level) of 40,331 individuals (16,544 men, 23,787 women) wereanalyzed. Overall prevalence for overweight was 40.4% among men, 31.3% among women, while for obesity 32.0%and 31.5%, respectively. Abdominal obesity was 37.1% in males, 60.9% in females. Among men, the prevalence ofoverweight-obesity was: under 35 y = 32.5%-16.2%, between 35-60 y = 40.6%-34.7%, over 60 y = 44.3%-36.7%. Amongwomen, in the same age categories were: 17.8%-13.8%, 29.7%-29.0%, and 36.9%-39.0%. Data were presented accordingto age by decades as well. The highest odds ratio of overweight (OR: 1.079; 95% CI [1.026-1.135]) was registered bymiddle educational level, the lowest odds ratio of obesity (OR: 0.500; 95% CI [0.463-0.539]) by the highest educationallevel. The highest proportion of obese people lived in villages (35.4%) and in Budapest (28.9%). Distribution ofoverweighed persons were: Budapest (37.1%), other cities (35.8%), villages (33.8%). Registered metabolic morbiditieswere strongly correlated with BMIs and both were inversely related to the level of urbanization. Over the previousdecades, there has been a shift in the distribution of population toward being overweight and moreover obese, itwas most prominent among males, mainly in younger generation. Conclusions: Evaluation covered 0.53% of the total population over 18 y and could be very close to the proper nationalrepresentativeness. The threat of obesity and related morbidities require higher public awareness and interventions.

Dátum:2005
Megjegyzések:The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and interrelations of systolic hypertension, hypercholesterinaemia and hyperglycaemia in more than 28,000 Hungarians. Study design and methods. A retrospective study was designed to collect relevant information from the database of the Screening Institution in Miskolc, Hungary, between 1990 and 1998. Prevalence of the investigated conditions was compared between different groups. Results. The occurrence of any of the investigated cardiovascular risk factors increased the likelihood of the other risk factors, and this relatonship was most apparent in more serious categories. A particularly high degree of comorbidity was found between hypertension and hyperglycaemia. Conclusion. Since these results were based on a large percentage of the population, this study provides an important message for practising doctors: if they find any of these three risk factors in a patient, it is highly recommended that they should search for the others. Megjegyzések:BackgroundIn order to provide effective primary care for refugees and to develop interventions tailored to them, we must know their needs. Little is known of the health needs and experiences of recently arrived refugees and other migrants throughout their journey through Europe. We aimed to gain insight into their health needs, barriers in access and wishes regarding primary health care.MethodsIn the spring of 2016, we conducted a qualitative, comparative case study in seven EU countries in a centre of first arrival, two transit centres, two intermediate-stay centres and two longer-stay centres using a Participatory Learning and Action research methodology. A total of 98 refugees and 25 healthcare workers participated in 43 sessions. Transcripts and sessions reports were coded and thematically analyzed by local researchers using the same format at all sites; data were synthesized and further analyzed by two other researchers independently.ResultsThe main health problems of the participants related to war and to their harsh journey like common infections and psychological distress. They encountered important barriers in accessing healthcare: time pressure, linguistic and cultural differences and lack of continuity of care. They wish for compassionate, culturally sensitive healthcare workers and for more information on procedures and health promotion.ConclusionHealth of refugees on the move in Europe is jeopardized by their bad living circumstances and barriers in access to healthcare. To address their needs, healthcare workers have to be trained in providing integrated, compassionate and cultural competent healthcare.

Megjegyzések:This study investigated barriers towards health behaviours (physical activity, limiting sedentary behaviour and healthy dietary habits) experienced by young European families living in vulnerable areas, from multiple perspectives (parents, teachers, local community workers). Focus groups were conducted in six European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Greece and Spain). In each country, three focus groups were conducted with parents, one with teachers and one with local community workers. Data were analysed using a deductive framework approach with a manifest content analysis using the software NVivo. The present study identified barriers on four levels (individual, interpersonal, organisational and macro level) of a socio-ecological model of health behaviour. From parents' perspectives, both general barriers (e.g., financial limitations and lack of time) and country-specific barriers (e.g., organisational difficulties and inappropriate work environment) were identified. Additional barriers (e.g., lack of parental knowledge and lack of parental skills) were provided by other stakeholders (i.e., teachers and local community workers). The results of this study demonstrate the additional value of including multiple perspectives when developing a lifestyle intervention aiming to prevent type 2 diabetes in vulnerable groups. Future lifestyle interventions are recommended to include multiple components (family, school, and community) and could be implemented across European countries if country-specific adaptations are allowed
