Megjegyzések:The COVID-19 pandemic has struck many countries globally. Jordan has implemented strict nationwide control measures to halt the viral spread, one of which was the closure of universities and shifting to remote teaching. The impact of this pandemic could extend beyond the risk of physical harm to substantial psychological consequences. Our study aimed at assessing 1) psychological status, 2) challenges of distance teaching, and 3) coping activities and pandemic-related concerns among university teachers in Jordan in the midst of COVID-19-related quarantine and control measures. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an anonymous online survey. The measure of psychological distress was obtained using a validated Arabic version of the Kessler Distress Scale (K10). Other information collected included sociodemographic profile, methods used to handle distress, motivation to participate in distance teaching, and challenges of distance teaching as well as the most worrisome issues during this pandemic. Three hundred eighty-two university teachers returned completed surveys. Results of K10 showed that 31.4% of respondents had severe distress and 38.2% had mild to moderate distress. Whereas gender was not associated with distress severity, age had a weak negative correlation (Rho = -0.19, P < 0.0001). Interestingly, most teachers had moderate to high motivation for distance teaching. Engagement with family was the most reported self-coping activity. More than half of the participants were most concerned and fearful about SARS-CoV-2 infection. In conclusion, university teachers have shown to exhibit various levels of psychological distress and challenges during the implementation of precautionary national measures in the battle against COVID-19 in Jordan.

Megjegyzések:The importance of optimal blood pressure control for preventing or reducing the impairment of vascular and cognitive functions is well known. However, the reversibility of early alterations in vascular and cognitive functions through antihypertensive agents is under-investigated. In this study, we evaluated the influence of 3 months of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition treatment on the morphological and functional arterial wall and cognitive performance changes in 30 newly diagnosed primary hypertensive patients. Common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) were detected by ultrasonography. Arterial stiffness indicated by augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) was assessed by arteriography. Cognitive functions were assessed by neuropsychological examination. The executive function overall score was significantly higher at 3-month follow-up than at baseline (median, 0.233 (IQR, 0.447) vs ?0.038 (0.936); P?=?.001). Three-month ACE inhibition did not produce significant improvement in IMT, FMD, AIx and PWV values. Significant negative associations were revealed between IMT and complex attention (r?=??0.598, P?=?.0008), executive function (r?=??0.617, P?=?.0005), and immediate memory (r?=??0.420, P?=?.026) overall scores at follow-up. AIx had significant negative correlations with complex attention (r?=??0.568, P?=?.001), executive function (r?=??0.374, P?=?.046), and immediate memory (r?=??0.507, P?=?.005). PWV correlated significantly and negatively with complex attention (r?=??0.490, P?=?.007). Timely and effective antihypertensive therapy with ACE inhibitors has significant beneficial effects on cognitive performance in as few as 3 months. Early ACE inhibition may have an important role in the reversal of initial impairments of cognitive function associated with hypertension-induced vascular alterations.

Megjegyzések:Objective. There is diverse results on the association between physical activity and sleep. So this study investigated association of level and type of physical activity with short term insomnia among college students. Methods. A cross sectional study was conducted among college students in India. The sample was 662 students with 359 males and 303 females. The predictor variables were type and level of physical activity and predicted variables were sleep complaints. Physical activity components were aseesesed through international physical activity questionnaire and sleep complaints using Pitsburg sleep questionnaire. The binary logistic regression models were used for data analysis. Level of significance was set at p ? 0.05 for all the analysis. Results. The age (mean + SD) of the participants were 23.2 ? 3.5 years. The self reported symptoms of short trem insomnia such as global sleep quality (adjusted odds ratio(AOR) = 15.58), subjective sleep quality (AOR = 6.01), sleep latency (AOR = 5.09), sleep duration (AOR = 0.13), sleep disturbances (AOR = 4.88), day time sleep dysfunction (AOR = 5.59) had shown association with level of physical activity. There was no association of type of physical activity with any other predicted variables. Conclusions. The findings of the present study supports that level of physical activity is a key predictor of short term insomnia symptoms among college students. There should be Interventions to maintain and improve the level of physical activity among students.

Megjegyzések:An association between health and socio-economic status is well known. Based on international and national studies, the aims of this study were to develop a multi-dimensional index at the municipality level, to provide information about socio-economic deprivation in Hungary and to investigate the association between socio-economic status and the spatial distribution of premature mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system. Seven municipality level socio-economic indicators were used from the National Information System of Spatial Development (income, low qualification, unemployment, one-parent families, large families, density of housing and car ownership). After normalisation and standardisation, indicator weights were evaluated using factor analysis. A risk analysis study was conducted using the Rapid Inquiry Facility software to evaluate the association between deprivation and the spatial distribution of premature mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system for the years 1998? 2004. Areas of significantly high deprivation were identified in the northeastern, eastern and southwestern parts of Hungary. A statistically significant association was found between premature cardiovascular mortality and deprivation status in both genders. The Deprivation Index is the first composite index at the municipality level in Hungary and includes key factors that affect socio-economic status. The identified association highlighted the fact that inequalities in socio-economic status may reflect the spatial distribution of health status in a population. The results can be used to inform prevention strategies and help plan local health promotion programs aimed at reducing health inequalities.

Megjegyzések:Background: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a very frequent microvascular complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Obesity and physical inactivity are well-known risk factors for T2DM. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a liver-secreted hormone with several beneficial effects on obesity-related metabolic disorders. We aimed to investigate the effect of short-term physical activity on the levels of FGF21, and its correlation with the severity of peripheral sensory polyneuropathy in T2DM patients. Methods: Thirty patients with DN were enrolled in the study, compared to age- and gender-matched controls. We conducted a six-week aerobic training program, which meant treadmill and cycle ergometers three times a week. Anthropometric and laboratory parameters were measured for each patient before and after intervention. Serum levels of FGF21, TNF-alpha, irisin, leptin and adiponectin were measured by ELISA. The sensory perception threshold (CPT) was quantitatively measured using Neurometer?. Results: We found significant decreases in BMI, waist circumference, HbA1c and TNF-alpha levels. From baseline to six-week follow-up, FGF21 levels were significantly increased in DN patients. Significant negative correlations were shown between the changes in FGF21 levels and BMI, between changes in FGF21 and the improvement of CPT values, and between the changes in FGF21 and TNF-alpha levels. There was no difference in irisin, adiponectin and leptin levels in DN patients after aerobic training program. Conclusion: The physical activity may increase the level of FGF21 in T2DM patients with neuropathy. Our results highlight the importance of regular physical activity in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
