Megjegyzések:	Aim. To study the causal factors of empathy and burnout and the effect of emotional involvement on medical doctors.Material and methods. Descriptive study at 4 Hungarian medical faculties with 67 psychiatry residents. Instruments: MaslachBurnout Inventory (Maslach and Jackson, 1986), Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis, 1980), Patient-Practitioner OrientationScale (Krupat, E. et al. 2000), and Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (Bride 2003). Statistics: Spearman correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, factor analysis with Varimax rotation.Results. High emotional exhaustion among 32.8% of residents, high level of depersonalization of 29.9%, decrease of personaleffectiveness of 52.2%. Significantly higher depersonalization for men (p ? 0.05). Significantly more subjective experience ofsymptoms of arousal for women than men (p = 0.028). Empathic distress (Interpersonal Reactivity Index) is accompanied byemotional exhaustion (p < 0.001), reduced personal accomplishment (p < 0.001), and each symptom of secondary trauma(p < 0.001). Emotional exhaustion correlates with all three symptoms of secondary trauma (p < 0.001).Factor analysis of the questionnaires revealed two main factors: the first factor we named "reactive empathy" or "mentalization".The second factor included components related to emotional contagion and its consequence, burnout.Conclusions. Experience of emotional contagion may predict the manifestation of burnout. Regulation of the intensity of emotionalstates, perspective change and empathic concern determine that form of empathy which has a positive effect on both thepatient and the therapist.

The aim of the study is to examine the change of emotional distress and fatigue influenced by a psychosocial intervention programme in women with non metastatic breast cancer.Material and methods. The research was carried out in Budapest at the Department of Radiodiagnostics of the National Institute of Oncology. The sample: n = 86 (34 women have participated in the study), control = 87. The Shortened Beck Depression Inventory, the Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the EORTC QLQ C30 quality of life questionnaire have been used for the research.Results. There was a significant improvement in patients in all three assessed outcome variables. Depression symptoms: F(1.72) = 4.347 p = 0.041; anxiety: F(1.65) = 6.021 p = 0.017; fatigue: F(1.78) = 15.060 p = 0.000.Conclusions. The early recognition of the presence of anxiety and depression, and their medical and psychological support are crucial. The psychosocial intervention efficiently helped the reduction of emotional distress and fatigue.

Megjegyzések:	The aim of the study is to examine the prevalence of depression and anxiety, and their correlation to quality of life in patients with malignant breast tumour.Material and methods. The research has been carried out in Budapest at the Department of Radiological Diagnostics of the National Institute of Oncology. 221 women have participated in the study, all suffering from breast cancer. The Shortened Beck Depression Inventory, the Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the EORTC QLQ C30 BR23 quality of life questionnaire have been used for the research.Results. The prevalence of clinical depression in the study-sample is 11.5% of the cases, 64.3% of the patients had mild depression (mean 12.97, std. deviation: 4.63). Concerning anxiety, 18.8% of the patients had severe and 13.6% had subclinical trait-anxiety (mean: 43.35, std. deviation: 10.31). There was a significant correlation between depression and anxiety (r=0.758, p=0.001). Both psychological disorders are reliable predictors for global, functional and symptom ratings of the quality of life, determined by the EORTC QLQ C30 BR23 questionnaire.Conclusion. The recognition of the presence of anxiety and depression, and their medical and psychological support are crucial as they fundamentally determine the patient's quality of life and can hugely help encourage the patient's cooperation and evoke the fighting spirit.
