Cím:A New and Improved Organizational Structure Decision-Making Model / Forest R. David, Meredith E. David, Fred R. David
Dátum:2021
ISSN:0749-7075
Megjegyzések:Businesses of all sizes and types around the world yearn for an effective organizational structure as they face rival firms committed to defeating them in the marketplace. Although the function of "organizing" is a key activity of management, scant literature provides either a theoretical or empirical basis for when, why, and how various types of structure are appropriate under various scenarios of organizational characteristics. From an extensive literature review, we determined there are 1) ten key characteristics of a firm that significantly impact structural design, 2) seven basic types of structure, and 3) three rudimentary characteristic-structure typological models. Existing typology models however do not adequately provide direction for companies or organizations making organizational structure decisions. Based on the characteristics, structure types, and prior typologies, we develop a new mathematical model that can reveal the best structure for any given firm. This paper provides a four-fold, substantial contribution to the management discipline by: 1) revealing ten basic organizational characteristics that can be used to guide organizational structure decision-making, 2) revealing seven basic types of organizational structure, 3) developing and presenting a new, improved model for determining the best structure for any firm, and by 4) proposing clear direction for future organizational structure research aimed at refining and enhancing the new model.

Cím:Business Curricula: Coverage of Employability Skills in a Strategic Management Course / Forest R. David, Meredith E. David, Fred R. David
Dátum:2020
ISSN:0749-7075
Megjegyzések:College textbook publishers such as Pearson, McGraw-Hill, and Cengage increasingly are requiring authors to provide coverage of employability skills. This requirement is in response to various accrediting organizations such as AACSB and SACS, as well as managers and students alike requiring that business courses better prepare students to enter the working world. This publisher requirement is also in response to MBA applications falling 6.9 percent globally in 2019 according to MBA entrance test administrator, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). This decline follows four straight years of declines. This paper examines how Pearson's leading strategic management textbook responds to this requirement to be more practical, skills-oriented, and relevant. Specifically, this paper summarizes how that textbook meets and exceeds expectations for coverage of employability skills. Additionally, in order to determine which employability skills presented in the Pearson book are considered to be most important in business, this paper provides results of a survey of 104 individuals who currently or recently used that book, and who are (or plan to be) practicing managers. Our results reveal that the most important "broad" employability skill is "Critical Thinking" and the most important "specific" employability skill to gain from the capstone course is to learn how to "Develop a three year strategic plan for any for-profit or non-profit company or organization." The findings reported herein accent the importance of (and need for) "practicality" in strategic management pedagogy. Implications of this research can provide guidance for academicians globally who continuously make decisions regarding "broad" and "specific" employability skills to include in business curricula, textbooks, syllabi, and lectures.

Cím:What is the Key to Effective SWOT Analysis, Including A Q C D Factors / Fred R. David, Steven A. Creek, Forest David
Dátum:2019
ISSN:0749-7075
Megjegyzések:Despite the widespread use of strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analyses in both practice and strategic management classrooms, vagueness within them hinders their effectiveness. This paper reveals how and why the key to effective SWOT analyses is the inclusion of external and internal factors that meet actionable, quantitative, comparative, and divisional (AQCD) criteria. We explain how AQCD factors help to minimize misinterpretation and pave the way for the specific strategy generation which enables the assignment of costs to each action.

Cím:Comparing Management Curricula With Management Practice / Fred R. David, Forest R. David
Dátum:2011
ISSN:0749-7075
Megjegyzések:We endorse, acknowledge, and recognize the outstanding work that many hundreds of management professors have done and continue to do in advancing the knowledge of business. Over the years, many academicians have maintained an excellent dialogue with the business community through consulting, writing, workshops, continuing education, and teaching. However, after many decades of research, the divide remains deep between the training rendered to management students and the needs of practicing managers. This disconnect is hurting business students, business schools, business firms, and American society. The present research presumes that a closer alignment of management curricula with managers' needs will benefit all stakeholders, including business school students seeking full-time employment. This paper examines the gap between theory (academic practice) and business practice, particularly looking at management curricula compared with business managers' needs. The purpose of this research was threefold: First, to identify specific management licenses and certifications cited in corporate job descriptions as required for entry-level business jobs. Management students today need proficiency in at least one license and certification area to compete for entry-level management jobs; Second, to assess the level of disconnect or gap between management curricula focus and managers' needs; Finally, to provide recommendations for schools of business to meet the needs of students and the business community concurrently.

Cím:The Integration of Marketing Concepts in Strategic-Management Courses: An Empirical Analysis / Fred R. David, Meredith E. David, Forest R. David
Dátum:2017
ISSN:0749-7075
Megjegyzések:In the past decade, there has been much discussion about the usefulness of business education (Terjesen and Politis, 2015; Ungaretti et al., 2015; Jarzabkowski and Kaplan, 2015). Although widely expected to improve the practice of business, business courses often fall short in fulfilling their role of providing students with marketable skills (Ghoshal, 2005; Mintzberg, 2004). One factor contributing to this issue is that many business courses direct (or bias) students to single disciplinary solutions. For example, students in marketing courses generally solve marketing problems without much or any regard to finance, management, accounting, or management information systems considerations (Johnson and Werner, 1975). Although the capstone strategic-management course is inherently or supposedly interdisciplinary, we examine the extent that marketing is integrated in that course (Terjesen and Politis, 2015). Specifically, this paper reveals 1) particular topics in marketing that are deemed to be most important in strategic planning or case analysis, and 2) the extent of coverage of these particular marketing topics in strategic-management textbooks. Implications for business pedagogy, curricula, theory, assurance of learning, and research are also discussed.
