Megjegyzések:The structure of an Quercetum petraeae-cerris oak forest ecosystem within the Síkfőkút research area (?Síkfőkút Project") have been studied 30 years by Authors. We registered the most important structural parameters of the forest's shrub layer in the ?A" quadrate (48x48 m). The perdition of dominant Quercus petraea tree individuals was heavy so the meso- and thermofil shrub species could be able to gain strength.The main results are the following:? Sixteen species were registered in the sample area. That all species could be find in the high shrub layer, but the Tilia cordata and the Rhamnus catharticus didn't live in the low shrub layer;? The number of shrubs individuals was 23874 per hectare, more then 16,5% lived in the high shrub layer;? The substantive foliage cover was 67,5% and the total foliage cover was 106,5%;? The Euonymus verrucosus dominated in the low shrub layer with 57,7%. The Acer campestre and the Euonymus verrucosus came out at 50,6% in the high shrub layer;

Megjegyzések:The structure of an Quercetum petraeae-cerris oak forest ecosystem within the Síkfőkút research area ("Síkfőkút Project") was examined by Authors already 35 years ago. The influence of the changes in stand structure due to the decline of sessile oak. The meso- and thermofil shrub species could be able to gain strength. The researchers registered the most important structural parameters of shrub layer in an "A" quadrat (48x48 m) of the oak-forest. The shrub heights were measured with a 3 m long yardstick and the diameter of shrub trunks were measured at 5 cm height above the soil with a slide gauge. Sixteen species were registered in the sample area in the both measuring in 1997 and in 2002. The number of shrubs individuals were 77083 pieces and 23874 pieces per hectar, more then 94,77% and 83,52% lived in the low shrub layer and only 5,23% and 16,48% lived in the high shrub layer. Euonymus verrucosus dominated in the low shrub layer some 46,0% and more then 50,0% on latter measuring. Acer campestre and Euonymus verrucosus came out at some 50,0% in the high shrub layer in both years. The two most frequently occuring high shrubs were Acer campestre and Euonymus verrucosus. The dominant shrubs grew bigger and bigger (the procession is taking at the moment), but the size of the others species decreased in a small compass. The rate of the low shrubs were decreasing as the latest measurement, proved.

Megjegyzések:Shrub layer dynamics is an indicator of forest health and it is also linked to ecological functioning of the forest. Similarly to other European countries there was an oak decline at the end of 70's in Hungary. At the Síkfőkút Project area 68.4% of the Quercus petraea and 15.6% of the Quercus cerris tree specimens died during the oak decline. In this paper we are exploring the dynamics of shrub layer after the decline. Location and cover of shrubs were mapped in a 48 m?48 m plot; the height and the diameter of each shoot were recorded in 1972, 1982, 1988, 1993, 1997, 2002 and 2007. Location (1972) and cover (1974) of trees were also mapped. We found that after the oak decline a secondary tree layer was formed by three shrub species (so-called dominant shrubs: A. campestre, Cornus mas and A. tataricum). There were 20 shrub species in the study area. In the gaps the density of Euonymus verrucosus increased remarkably, but they never grow up higher than 4.0 m. The secondary tree specimens showed clustered distribution in every measuring. We found no correlation between oak tree density and the total shrub cover, and surprisingly we found a positive relationship between oak tree density and dominant shrub's density. Our study revealed that the forest responded to the tree decline by structural changes in both tree and shrub layer.

Megjegyzések:The stand dynamics of oak forests in Europe has been a topic of interest and concern to resource managers and scientists in the past period. The serious oak decline has been reported for the 1979-80 period and 63.0% of adult oak was died in Síkfőkút site, Hungary. The data were used to obtain quantitative information on species composition, density, mean sizes, diversity indices andshrub foliage cover in the low shrub layer. The species composition, occurrence frequency and density were observed; the height and diameter of each high shrub specimen was recorded in a 48 m x 48 m permanent plot. Seventeen native woody species (trees and shrubs) were identified across the entire study area. The proportion of low and high shrub specimen's density was 93.6% and 6.4%.The most common high shrub species were Euonymus verrucosus, Acer campestre and Acer tataricum. The most common low shrub species were Quercus petraea and E. verrucosus. The biggest high shrub species were A. campestre and C. mas in the site.
