Megjegyzések:Craniophora ligustri is the most widely distributed species within the genus Craniophora. We used geometric morphometry to assess the shape variation of male valvae in the Western Palaearctic and Russian Far East populations of C. ligustri including the subspecies C. l.carbolucana and C. l. hyrcanica. Outlines were transformed using Hangle Fourier method followed by shape analyses using multivariate statistics (CVA, UPGMA). Based on the results the Far Eastern sample is clearly separated from the Western Palaearctic populations.The West Palaearctic samples were split to two demes, a Northern and a Southern one. The probable refugia of the Southern deme may have extended from South Italy, the Balkan Peninsula across the Euxinic coast of Asia Minor to the Talysh and Northern Iran (Hyrcanian part of Elburs Mts), while the refugia of the Northern deme have been supposedly extra-Mediterranean.

Megjegyzések:We studied dragonfly assemblages in the Ukrainian section of the River Tisza, which still shows several natural (unregulated) properties. In 2010 and 2011 larvae and exuviae were collected in the vicinity of the villages Vilok ( Tiszaújlak), Nove Szelo ( Tiszaújhely), Tiszobikeny ( , Tiszabökény) and of the towns Vinohragyiv ( Nagyszőlős) and Huszt ( Huszt). We collected our samples from 8 sites in the main channel, 2 sites in side channels and 3 sites in two dead channels. We collected 255 larvae and 1587 exuviae, from which 8 species of dragonflies were identified [Gomphus vulgatissimus (Linnaeus, 1758), Stylurus flavipes (Charpentier, 1825), Onychogomphus forcipatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Ophiogomphus cecilia (Fourcroy, 1785), Somatochlora metallica (van der Linden, 1825), Calopteryx splendens (Harris, 1782), Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771), and Sympecma fusca (van der Linden, 1820)]. We compared the species composition of dragonflies in the three habitats. In the case of larvae in the main channel G. vulgatissimus (48.0%), C. splendens (29.6%) and O. forcipatus (20.8%) dominated, while in the dead channels C. splendens (49.5%) and P. pennipes (23.7%) were found most frequently. In the side channels G. vulgatissimus, O. forcipatus and C. splendens were the most frequent species. S. Flavipes appeared only in the main and side channels, while S. metallica and S. fusca were only detected in the dead channels.

Megjegyzések:We investigated morphological characteristics of a population in a contact zone of two sister species of nightingales in North-East Hungary. The aim of our study was to analyse and interpret the current morphological patterns of a nightingale population in three populations, called Bódva, Tiszalúc-Bárányszeg and Tiszabercel-Tiszatelek. The research was carried out between 2006 and 2010 at the northern sites of rivers Tisza, and Bódva, where 63 nightingales were examined altogether. The three populations were compared with each other for several morphological characteristics. The populations were significantly different in wing-pointedness, wing-symmetry and body mass and, although marginally, in tail length. Based on the combination of two morphological traits (the relative length of the short first primary and the proportion of length of the second and fourth primary),seven (11.1%) of all investigated birds were identified as interspecific hybrids. In conclusion, we suggest a possible interspecific hybridization between the two nightingale species in the studied area. We assume that the modification in the structure of riverine vegetation might be one of the reasons of the relatively high proportion of hybrid individuals.

Megjegyzések:Habitat quality affects the presence and size of butterfly populations. Resources for all lifestages must be found in a given or few habitat patches. Southern festoon (Zerynthia polyxena)is a vulnerable, but locally abundant species in Hungary. The larva requires birthwort(Aristolochia clematitis) as food plant. We examined the small scale habitat use of adultsand distribution of eggs and larvae among different vegetation types to reveal the requirementsof the species in all life stages. Transect counts were conducted in a tree plantationcomplex comprising four types of vegetation. Number (±SE) of adults, eggs and larvaewere lowest in poplar plantation (adult 0.3±0.2, egg 1.1±1.1, larva 0.6±0.3). Medium amountof butterflies were observed in open (adult 8.3±2.9, egg 3.1±2.6, larva 3.1±1.9) and blacklocust(adult 9.4±4.2, egg 12.7±4.9, larva 4.1±1.1) habitat. Number of butterflies was highestin hummocks (adult 13.5±1.5, egg 12.9±5.7, larva 8.4±2.1). Adults avoided bare ground. Weencountered most eggs in dense food plant patches with high plants. Food plant heightalso positively influenced the occurrence of the larvae. Although distribution of adultsand juvenile forms showed quite similar patterns, we could also reveal some differencesthat caused by different environmental conditions in distinct vegetation types. Our studystresses the importance of habitat quality, which affects population size of butterflies evenin a highly degraded habitat complex.

Megjegyzések:The main objective of this paper is to report the effect of grazing intensity on the diversity of ground- dwelling spiders. The study was conducted in grassy and shrubby habitats of the Somhegy-Bükk pasture of the Mátra Mountains in Hungary, where grazing is considered as an experimental management. We found significant effects of grazing on spider communities. Meadow diversity increased during moderate graz - ing compared to the pre-treatment diversity. Species diversity decreased during intensive grazing. Spider diversity of shrub decreased during both moderate and intensive grazing. We compared grazing in shrub and meadow habitats with control habitats in case of intensive grazing. Our result showed that the control habi - tats had higher diversity than the grazing habitats. Spider species had narrow tolerance for habitat naturalness in the moderately grazed habitats. We could conclude that grazing is an effective grassland management ac - tion to increase spider diversity in the Somhegy-Bükk pasture. Lowering the grazing intensity is necessary in order to save and maintain the high spider diversity. Finally, there is no optimal grazing intensity for all habitats because spiders of shrubs and meadows responded differently to grazing
