Megjegyzések:Question: Based on the spontaneous vegetation development of old-fields in the Nyírség and Kiskunság sand regions (Hungary), we aimed to answer the following questions using the chronosequence method: (1) how do the proportionsof different functional groups change during succession; (2) which target species establish successfully in the old-fields during the course of succession; and (3)how successful is spontaneous succession in the recovery of target grasslands-Location: Two sand regions of the Great Hungarian Plain: (1) the Nyírség sand region (East Hungary, acidic sand, moderately continental climate) and the Kiskunság (Central Hungary, calcareous sand, continental climate). Methods: Altogether 24 old-fieldswere classified into young (<10-yr-old),middle-aged (10-20-yr-old) and late-succession (20-40-yr-old) old-fields; four fields in each age category. For baseline vegetation reference, three open and three closed sand grassland stands in both regions were sampled in the vicinity of the old-fields. The percentage cover of vascular plants was recorded in five 2 X 2-mplots in each field, in early May and late June 2012. We used life forms, clonal spreading traits and Ellenberg indicator values for nutrients in the analysis. Speciesof Festuco-Brometea class were considered as target species. Results: The cover of hemicryptophytes and geophytes increased, the cover of short-lived species decreased with time. Cover of species without clonal spreadingability decreased, while cover of species with clonal spreading ability increased with increasing field age. The cover of invasive species decreased with increasing field age. The majority of target species had established already in the young and middle-aged old-fields, although their cover was significantly higher in the two older age groups. Conclusion: Spontaneous succession can be a vital option in recovery of sand grassland vegetation in Central Europe; the majority of the species pool of sandy grasslands can be recovered in the first 10-20 yrs. However, the success of grassland recovery can be strongly influenced by the surrounding species pool and can be slow if seed dispersal is limited. Spontaneous succession is most promising when the target species of grasslands immigrate at the very beginning of the succession, within the first few years.

Megjegyzések:Biodiversity related observational data are collected in a variety of ways and for a variety of purposes, mostly in the form of some sort of organised data collection action. Data management solutions are often developed to manage the data collection processes and organise the data, which may work well on their own but are less compatible with other data management tools. In a continuous development process, we have created the OpenBioMaps (OBM) biodiversity data management platform, which can be used as a self-hosted data management platform and as a free service, hosted by several institutions for biological database projects. OBM has the ability to integrate biological databases without any structural or functional constraints, allowing a high degree of flexibility in data management and development; it provides interfaces to facilitate communication between different end-user communities, including scientists, citizens, conservationists and educational staff. We have also established a network of OBM services based on collaboration between government, educational and scientific institutions and NGOs to provide a public service to those who lack the capacity or knowledge to set up or manage their own self-hosted servers. OpenBioMaps uniquely focuses on the entire data management process, from building the data structure to data collection, visualisation, sharing and processing.

Megjegyzések:Plant species performance in rangelands highly depends on the effect of grazing and also on the occurrence of unpalatable benefactor species that can act as biotic refuges protecting neighboring plants from herbivores. The balance between facilitation and competition may changes with the benefactor density. Despite the high number of studies on the role of biotic refuges, the density dependent effects of unpalatable herbaceous plants on the performance of other species, and on the habitat heterogeneity of rangelands are still unclear. Therefore, we performed a study to test the following hypotheses: (i) Performances of understory species follow a humped-back relationship along the density gradient of the unpalatable benefactor species. (ii) Small-scale heterogeneity of the vegetation decreases with increasing benefactor density. We studied meadow steppes with medium intensity cattle grazing in Hungary. We surveyed understory species' performance (number of flowering shoots and cover scores) along the density gradient of a common, native unpalatable species (Althaea officinalis). Our findings supported both hypotheses. We found unimodal relationship between the benefactor cover and both the flowering success and richness of understory species. Moreover, small-scale heterogeneity declined with increasing benefactor cover. In this study we detected a humped-back pattern of facilitation along the density gradient of an herbaceous benefactor in pastures. Indeed, this pattern was predictable based on such conceptual models like ?consumer pressure-abiotic stress model', ?humped-back model', ?intermediate disturbance hypothesis' and ?disturbance heterogeneity model'; but until now the validity of these relationships has not been demonstrated for herbaceous species. By the demonstration of this effect between herbaceous species we can better forecast the responses of grasslands to changes in management.

Megjegyzések:We tested the establishment success of grassland species in the presence or absence of zoochory by livestock and identified the traits associated with successful establishment. Hortobágy National Park, Hungary. In six restored species-poor grasslands we established two species-rich 4 m ? 4 m source plots per site in 2013. One source plot was managed by extensive cattle grazing ("zoochory on"), the other one was fenced and protected from grazers ("zoochory off"). We monitored the vegetation development in the source plots (2014?2018), and the establishment success of sown species (2016?2018) in adjacent dispersal plots in four, 20-m-long strips per source plot in a total of 960 dispersal plots. We calculated community-weighted means of thirteen plant traits related to regeneration and competitive ability. The effect of grazing, year, distance from source plots, grazing?year and grazing?distance interactions on population and trait dynamics in the source and dispersal plots were analysed with generalized linear mixed-effect models. Although grazing reduced the cover and flowering success of sown species in the source plots, the number of successful establishment events was higher in dispersal plots next to grazed source plots. The sown species were the most abundant in plots adjacent to source plots, but occurred at all monitored distances. Zoochory favoured perennial plants with high specific leaf area (SLA), low leaf dry matter content (LDMC), short stature, light seeds, early flowering period, high clonal index and anemochory index. We showed that species that can colonize the matrix with and without zoochory have contrasting trait syndromes. In grazing-adapted ecosystems, fencing source populations of target species does not always seem to be a good option. It was a good tool for increasing the cover and flowering success of the sown species in the short run, but it significantly decreased their chance to colonize the surrounding area in the long run.

Dátum:2015
ISSN:1343-8786 1479-8298
Megjegyzések:Although intensive care for offspring by both parents is rare in arthropods, it occurs in some species including the beetle Lethrus apterus. According to previous publications, in this species the male collects leaves, which are used by the female to form balls in the underground nest burrow. These balls serve as food for the hatched offspring. Most knowledge about the behavior of this species is based on information collected more than a century ago. Therefore, we investigated above-ground breeding behavior and the status of nest burrows of this beetle in its natural habitat in Hungary. Our results suggest that contrary to previously documented cases, above-ground parental care, i.e. the collection of leaves, is done predominantly not by the males but the females. Further research is needed to understand the role of the sexes in parental care in this species and to explain the discrepancy between the previously documented cases and the results we report here.

Megjegyzések:The reproducibility of extraction of residues from spiked soil samples and from soils containing incurredresidues was tested with 14C-labeled test compounds of different physical-chemical properties. Nearly100% of the compounds added to the sample before extraction could be recovered with an averagereproducibility relative standard deviation (CV) of 5.4%. The additional steps of the determination process(cleanup, evaporation, etc.) contributed to the major part of the variability of the results (CV D 10-20%).The incurred residues were most efficiently extracted with acetone for 30 min followed by the mixture ofacetone/ethyl acetate 1:1 for additional 30 min. However, they could only be recovered at various extent(64-90% of total residues), underlying the importance of testing the efficiency of extraction. The residueswere identified and quantified by gas chromatography applying thermionic detector. The performanceparameters of the method complied with the international method validation guidelines, and they provedto be robust and suitable for determination of pesticide residues in soils of widely different physical?chemical properties.

Cím:Distribution of pesticide residues in soil and uncertainty of sampling / Gabriella K. Suszter, Árpád Ambrus

Megjegyzések:Pesticide residues were determined in about 120 soil cores taken randomly from the top 15 cm layer of two sunflower fields about 30 days after preemergence herbicide treatments. Samples were extracted with acetone-ethyl acetate mixture and the residues were determined with GC-TSD. Residues of dimethenamid, pendimethalin, and prometryn ranged from 0.005 to 2.97 mg/kg. Their relative standard deviations (CV) were between 0.66 and 1.13. The relative frequency distributions of residues in soil cores were very similar to those observed in root and tuber vegetables grown in pesticide treated soils. Based on all available information, a typical CV of 1.00 was estimated for pesticide residues in primary soil samples (soil cores). The corresponding expectable relative uncertainty of sampling is 20% when composite samples of size 25 are taken. To obtain a reliable estimate of the average residues in the top 15 cm layer of soil of a field up to 8 independent replicate random samples should be taken. To obtain better estimate of the actual residue level of the sampled filed would be marginal if larger number of samples were taken.

Megjegyzések:The efficiency of four sample processing methods was tested with eight different typesof soils representing the major proportion of cultivated soils. The principle of samplingconstant was applied for characterizing the efficiency of the procedures and testing thewell-mixed status of the prepared soil. The test material was 14C-labeled atrazine thatenabled keeping the random error of analyses ? about 1%. Adding water to the soilproved to be the most efficient and generally applicable procedure resulting in about6% relative sample processing uncertainty for 20 g test portions. The expected erroris inversely proportional to the mass of test portion. Smashing and manual mixing ofsoil resulted in about four times higher uncertainty than mixing with water. Grindingof soil is applicable for dry soils only, but the test procedure applied was not suitable forestimating a typical uncertainty of processing dry soil samples. Adding dry ice did notimprove the efficiency of sample processing.

Megjegyzések:In the Anthropocene, humans are among the most abundant long-distance seed dispersal vectors globally, due to our increasing mobility and the growing global population. However, there are several knowledge gaps related to the process of human-vectored dispersal (HVD) on clothing. In a multi-site field experiment covering various habitat types in three countries of Central-Europe, we involved 88 volunteer participants and collected 251 HVD samples and 2008 subsamples from their socks and shoes. We analysed the number of diaspores and species in the samples. Specifically, we studied the effects of site characteristics (variables related to habitat types and season), vector characteristics (activity type, gender, clothing type, shoe type) and plant characteristics (species pool of the visited habitats and plant traits) on the number of diaspores and array of species dispersed. We assessed the habits of people that could be relevant for HVD with a questionnaire survey. A total of 35,935 diaspores of 229 plant taxa were identified from the samples, which indicates a huge potential of HVD in dispersing diaspores across habitats and regions. Most diaspores were recorded in grassland habitats, and more diaspores were dispersed during fieldwork than excursions. Clothing type also played a decisive role: there were more diaspores and species when wearing short-top shoes and short trousers than long ones. Even though our study was carried out mainly in natural or semi-natural habitats, a large number of dispersed species were disturbance-tolerants and weeds and only a few were specialists, suggesting the controversial role of HVD in conservation. At the individual level, people can reduce the number of diaspores through their clothing choices and diaspore removal habits, while providing adequate equipment for staff, operating cleaning stations, and increasing awareness of employees are main ways in which unintended diaspore dispersal can be tackled at the institutional level.

Megjegyzések:The serious oak decline was reported for the 1979-80 period and 63.0% of adult oaks died in a mixed oak forest in the Síkfőkút site, Hungary. The data were used to obtain (1) quantitative information on diversity indices of shrub layer and shrub canopy, including foliage cover percentage of the shrub layer, mean cover of shrub species before and after the oak decline and (2) structural information on shrub basal area and shrub foliage arrangement. Since 1972 we have determined diversity indices, cover percentage and basal area of shrubby vegetation on the monitoring and plus plots. A negative relation was detected between Shannon-Wiener and Evenness indices of the shrub layer and living oak tree density. A positive relation was confirmed between basal area and mean cover of dominant woody species (Acer campestre, Acer tataricum and Cornus mas). The mean cover of shrub species except of A. campestre increased non-significantly after the oak decline on the 48 m ? 48 m plot. The findings of the study indicate that diversity indices of the shrub layer and mean cover of A. campestre can be used as a principal indicator of natural disturbance in the studied mature stand and the species of the shrub layer respond differently to the decreasing stand density.
