Megjegyzések:The present paper aims to analyze how the different causes underlying misunderstandings can be predicted by relevance theory. Misunderstandings are defined as those types of unsuccessful communicative acts that primarily pertain to the unfulfillment of the informative intention of the speaker. After briefly reviewing the theoretical background for the investigation of ostensive-inferential communication and the previous research on communicative failures the paper provides a theoretically determined and empirically supported typology of misunderstandings in verbal communication.

Megjegyzések:One of the quandaries of current pragmatic research is 'Grices circle'. Namely, in Grice's seminal essay on logic and conversation the relation between 'what is said' and 'what is implicated' seems to be viciously circular: 'what is said' - i.e. truthconditional meaning - is the input to 'what is implicated', and 'what is implicated' is the input to ♭what is said'. The aim of the present paper is to examine whether the thought experiments which in the current pragmatic literature are used to introduce possible accounts of the relation between 'what is said' and ♭what is implicated' indeed fail because they lead to circularity; and if they are not circular and do not fail in this respect, how they succeed in avoiding circularity. The framework which serves reaching this aim is Kertész & Rákosi's (2012) p-model of plausible argumentation.

Megjegyzések:We aim to explore the merging of various data sources in two different disciplines of the study of language use, namely, synchronic and historical pragmatics. On the basis of two case studies taken from the actual research practice of these traditionally corpus-based fields, we demonstrate that corpus as a data source is of an integrated nature and research methodologies in pragmatic research have fuzzy boundaries. We attempt to show that even in a mainly corpus-based research practice various pieces of information gained from different sources are merged, consequently, corpus as a data source is not exclusive. We argue that it is complemented with the researchers' linguistic intuition, the results of earlier investigations, the theoretical framework we work in, inferences, etc. as further data sources.

Megjegyzések:Irresolvable inconsistencies can often be solved within a new theoretical framework. CV phonology raised the hope that it could be void of the shortcomings characterising earlier approaches to the basic inconsistency of German affricates. Although Prinz & Wiese's (1991) approach is clearly better from several points of view than Wurzel's eclectic framework, the basic inconsistency of German affricates did not become solvable within this framework, either. The reason for this is, above all, that the conflicting test results could not be separated from each other satisfactorily, in a wellfounded manner.

Megjegyzések:Linguistics lacks clear methodological guidelines which could be made use of whenever one faces a contradiction. The basic inconsistency of German affricates provides an instructive example of the problems emerging from this situation. This paper aims to reveal why Wurzel's eclectic framework, applying both notions of structuralist phonology and SPE, yields an irresolvable inconsistency. CV phonology raised the hope that the latter could be void of the shortcomings characterising earlier approaches. The continuation of this paper, Rákosi (2014) will be devoted to the analysis of Prinz & Wiese's (1991) approach.

Megjegyzések:The replications of the experiments in Thibodeau & Boroditsky (2011) by the authors, and Steen and his colleagues brought a spectacular proliferation and development of experimental designs. Despite this, the two series of replications repeatedly lead to conflicting results. This paper intends to resolve this contradictory situation with the help of a novel theoretical framework called the 'experimental complex'. This framework makes it possible to reconstruct the relationship existing among the original experiment as well as its replications, and to evaluate the problem solving process and propose future developments. The high quality of the experiments analysed in this paper does not allow for easy and clear-cut decisions, but it offers a rich source of inspiration, as well as guidance on further prospects.
