Cím:Conflicting Narrative Identity Formation in Racialized Intercultural Discourse. Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist / Abádi Nagy Zoltán
Dátum:2016
ISSN:2068-2956 2391-8179
Megjegyzések:The paper addresses the issue of how racialized intercultural relations can problematize the formation of narrative identity. How it can call in question the narratability of racialized subjectivity and lead to conflicting narrative identites of the same character as inferrible from narratorial discourse, vis-ℓa-vis the way the character views itself in its intramental activity. And how all of this follows from, and is traceable through the manifestations of, racialized cognitive architecture, and thus, paradoxically, unnarratability can become the source of narrativity. The conflicting nature of racialized subjectivity and narrative identity formation will be examined, then, through a socio-cognitive lens. This study will draw on Nadine Gordimer's apartheid-era novel, The Conservationist (1974) as a tutor text and will be informed especially by colonial/postcolonial theory, cultural as well as cognitive narratology, cognitive cultural studies, theories of intercultural communication, and discourse analysis.

Cím:Analogous versus Digital Reading. A Comparative Study / Dani Erzsébet
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:The growing digitalization of our world is not only changing the way we process information but also raises new questions regarding the manner in which we read and comprehend digital texts. The way the digital text structures information is different from how traditional printed texts do it. Therefore, the receiver needs new strategies of text acquisition. It is not the well-known generalities related to the subject that my proposed study intends to regurgitate. Rather, it aims to focus on and attempts to explore some so far mostly ignored or only tangentially (if at all) mentioned aspects of the matter such as: 1) the literary (e.g. fictional) versus non-fiction nature of the digital text; 2) how digital reading culture affects analogue (print) reading culture; 3) a comparative generational view, i.e. similar or diverging features of the above factors, depending on whether the receiver of the text is a Generation X or a Generation Z reader, the former raised on printed books being the product of the "Gutenberg Galaxy," while the latter is shaped both by the Gutenberg but primarily by the "Neumann Galaxy."

Megjegyzések:For Hungarians who remained stuck beyond the borders after WWI, finding themselves in a foreign country from one day to the next, the historical trauma of the Trianon Treaty occasioned intercultural tribulations never experienced before .What the resulting Transylvanian literature discussed here is concerned with, however, is not what Jeffrey C. Alexander's cultural trauma theory calls "the trauma process", "the spiral of signification" (Alexander 2004, 11). Rather, it is concerned with "the indelible marks" "the horrendous event" left "upon group consciousness [...] changing their future identity in fundamental and irrevocable ways" (Alexander 2004, 1). This literature displays a rich array of the management strategies of minority identity. Earlier I devoted a book to the identity types that ensued from those strategies (Dani 2016a). The present work is based on that monograph and moves on. This time I wish to focus on the key figures of two Rózsa Ignácz novels (Anyanyelve magyar and Született Moldovában) to demonstrate the complex identity patterns that an erosion of minority native language and culture, so destructive to identity, yields. The road that the Hungarian minority travels leads through a succession of active and reactive changes, crises, and modifications of perspective in the maze of minority versus hegemonic intercultural relations.

Megjegyzések:As the world is struggling with the Covid crisis and its numerous aftereffects, it is easy to forget that the present pandemic is only the latest of a whole series of paradigm-changing 21st-century crises . Indeed, the word "crisis" has become one of the key concepts for the understanding of the early 21st century . Thus, crisis seems very much to be the default position of the 21st century, the new norm . In this paper, I argue that the 21st century has a recognizably different cultural logic from what the previous one had: most of our social, ideological, political, financial, and ecological paradigms are either changing or will (or must) change soon . As most of our critical concepts, intellectual tools, and ideological frameworks were made during the boom years of the late 20th century, they are clearly outdated and inadequate today . Thus, in this paper, through taking account of these shifting intellectual and artistic paradigms, I attempt to indicate how the present crisis of knowledge and sense-making may be turned into a process of knowing and making sense of crisis, and thus help us meet the challenges of the new century . It is often through these fault-lines, breakdowns, and inconsistencies of our narratives that one may recognize those pre-crisis assumptions that we have to critically re-evaluate and update in order to understand the new century

Dátum:2010
Megjegyzések:The paper gives an overview of the grammar of parallel Hungarian andEnglish focus phenomena and outlines an account in the framework of Lexical-FunctionalGrammar (LFG). Focus constructions are subject to variation with respect to their grammaticalproperties both within and across the two languages. The LFG framework is well-suited torepresent this variation in a systematic way and, at the same time, to capture at the level ofinformation-structure the shared contribution that various focus constructions make.

Cím:Homes of Crimes Social Stratification as Location Strategy in the Hungarian Family Crime Drama Aranyélet ?Golden Life` / Mészáros Péter; Molnár-Kovács Dorottya
Dátum:2019
ISSN:2067-5151 2391-8179
Megjegyzések:HBO Hungary's original series, Aranyélet, proves to be an interesting case study in terms of location strategies in Eastern European TV shows. It is refreshing in the sense that ? contrary to other TV programmes attempting to showcase life in Budapest ? it does not feel the need to represent locality by swamping the viewer with iconic tourist destinations of the capital. Instead, the characteristic "Hungarianness" of the show appears through displaying personal living spaces of people from a wide range of socio-cultural backgrounds, all of which represent the typical Hungarian strata. In our paper, we have used a simplified categorization of social classes apparent in Hungarian society and connected these groups with characters of Aranyélet. Then, we have scrutinized the living spaces of these characters as represented in the show, paying special attention to their likely location, furnishing, building materials, and general condition. By this analysis, we aim to prove that the show tries to create an alternative mental map of Budapest and its population, covering all strata of society with painting a picture of their lifestyle and living conditions. Our paper draws on the work of Kim Toft Hansen and Anne Marit Waade, who, in their volume Locating Nordic Noir - From Beck to The Bridge, place a large emphasis on aspects of location studies in contemporary Scandinavian crime.

Cím:Covidian Metamorphoses: Art and the Poetics of Transformation in Ali Smith's / Orosz-Réti Zsófia
Dátum:2021
ISSN:2068-2956 2067-5151
Megjegyzések:Ali Smith's Autumn (2016), coined "the first Brexit novel", relied on a very "time-sensitive" publication schedule: weeks after the manuscript had been submitted, the book was already published, documenting almost in real-time the aftermath of the Brexit referendum. The remaining three volumes of the Seasonal Quartet (Winter, 2017; Spring, 2019; Summer, 2020) also followed a similarly tight schedule; hence the last piece of the collection, published in the summer of 2020, could already reflect on yet another crisis: that of the COVID-19 pandemic and the first lockdown in Britain. The Quartet offers art as a vital coping mechanism for such critical times, but the present paper argues that the function of art in the Quartet is even more pervasive than that. The sequence's entire poetics of transformation is founded on art as a mediatized means of experiencing the world, which is then turned into a rhetoric of transformation. The paper traces the three main motifs of the Quartet: that of the tree, the stone, and the cloud/sky to look at how their art-based transformations create a sense of connectedness in the four novels.
