Megjegyzések:	Rózsa Ignácz's historical novel Torockói gyász ['Torockó Mourning'] (1958) deals with the staggering tragedy of Transylvanian Torockó in 1702. But the referential pattern that emerges from the dramatic plot clearly points beyond eighteenth-century time and space in partly overt and mostly covert ways: to the early twentieth-century postTrianon fate of the Hungarians in Transylvania, and beyond, to the destructive post-1945 totalitarian communist regime in Hungary, as well as to the backlash of the 1956 anticommunist and anti-Soviet revolution and war of independence. The narrative techniques of expanding early eighteenth-century time and space will be examined through the ways in which thematic threads of collective identity are woven in the novel in general, and the customs, habits, and the religious affiliation of the community are handled in particular. Theories of Jan Assmann, Michael Bamberg, David Herman, Erving Goffman, Fritz Heider and Anselm L. Strauss as well as observations of Ignácz researchers such as Lajos Kántor, Gabriella F. Komáromi, and Erzsébet Dani will be used.

Megjegyzések:	Gyula Prinz is responsible for the notion of "Magyar Mezopotámia" ['Hungarian Mesopotamia']. The natural basis for this idea is that Hungarian culture developed on the surface of an alluvial plains area. According to Prinz, this sort of natural environment was the precondition of great civilizations based on agriculture. In other words, the intrinsic Duna-Tisza [♭Danube-Tisza'] river structure, which is similar to that of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, would elevate Hungary to the status of a "mesopotamic" country. This, according to Prinz, is how the central Hungarian area could become the distributive core of culture, and how this culture could be radiated towards the neighboring peoples who also lived together with the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. According to the mesopotamic thesis, Hungary's "cultural power" therefore "elevated" the cultural level of other peoples who lived on the edges of the Carpathian Basin. Accordingly, the "end" or borderland of Hungary's "core culture" was seen to be located where the territory populated by Hungarians ends, or where the plains area shifts into the Carpathian Mountains.

Megjegyzések:	The turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century was witness to an unprecedented wave of emigration from East Central Europe, with an estimated 1-1.5 million people leaving for the United States from the territory of Hungary. Such loss of population, most young males in their prime, shocked the nation and served as a subject for discussion in various forms and on multiple levels of discourse, from the newspaper reports through literary depictions, to scholarly publications and conferences. In this paper I examine significant monographs as well as conference volumes and proceedings, analyzing the major opinions and debates surrounding the causes and consequences of the Great Transatlantic Emigration. I discuss the most significant publications that appeared before the coming of the First World War, which put an end to mass emigration from Europe. These works in a sense represented the best that Hungarian migration studies had to offer for more than half a century, which makes them particulary worthy of scholarly attention
