Seasonal observations and machine-learning-based spatial model predictions for the common raven (Corvus corax) in the urban, sub-arctic environment of Fairbanks, Alaska / A. P. Baltensperger, T. C. Mullet, M. S. Schmid, G. R. W. Humphries, L. Kövér, F. Huettmann

Megjegyzések:
The common raven (Corvus corax) is an abundant generalist of the northern hemisphere, known to congregate and roost near human-related food sources. Due to a growing human-footprint and associated anthropogenic food subsidies, raven populations have increased dramatically over the past several years throughout the USA. The sub-arctic region has also witnessed increased urbanization and industrialization, and ravens have taken advantage of these changes. During 2004 and 2006, we surveyed parking lots on a bi-weekly basis in the city of Fairbanks in interior Alaska, showing an influx of ravens in winter. Between 2010 and 2012, we documented the presence and absence of ravens at a permanent set of 30 suspected raven locations and 21 randomized locations within the city limits of Fairbanks. We used machine learning (RandomForests) and 12 spatial GIS datasets from the Fairbanks North Star Borough to accurately model-predict the relative occurrence of ravens during winter and summer in Fairbanks. Our research showed a positive correlation between raven occurrence and commercial and residential zones in both winter and summer, as well as an inverse geographic relationship between ravens and the waste transfer station in the study area in winter, and a direct correlation near restaurants in summer. These results emphasize the link that ravens have with commercial, anthropogenic food sources, and how Fairbanks and its subsidized, urban habitat may be shaping part of the wider sub-arctic biodiversity landscape.

Dátum:

Megjegyzések:
Cultivation of plants in vitro is currently one of the most common methods of vegetative propagation of plants. It makes it possible to obtain homogeneous planting material in large quantities within a short time, on small areas, and at relatively low cost; to preserve particularly valuable pheno- and genotypes, or to obtain biologically active substances of plant origin. The use of microclonal plant propagation is an excellent complement to the conservation of critical species that are endangered in their natural habitats or have difficult generative reproduction. The main goal of our research ?larification the peculiarities of tissue culture of three rare and endangered species of the Hungarian flora, viz. Dianthus plumarius ssp. praecox (Willd. ex Spreng.) Domin, Dianthus giganteiformis Borbás ssp. pontederae (Borbás) Soó, and Dianthus superbus L. Healthy and viable seeds were used as initial explants. The sterilising reagents used were different concentrations of mercuric hippochloride (HgCl2), sodium chloride (NaClO) and commercial chloramine B (NH2Cl). Subsequently, the plants were grown on Murashige and Skoog agarified hormone-free medium. It was established that for the seeds of the three researched carnation taxa, sterilization with 2,5% chloramine B for 15 minutes is the most optimal, this ensures obtaining aseptic planting material capable of intensive germination and formation of viable explants. For the induction of rhizogenesis, the most optimal is a modified MS medium with the addition of indolylacetic acid at a concentration of 0,1 mg/l.

Finding valuable bioactive components from Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) 2 leaf protein concentrate in a green biorefinery concept / László Kaszás, Tarek Alshaal, Hassan El-Ramady, Zoltán Kovács, Judit Koroknai, Nevien Elhawat, Éva Nagy, Zoltán Cziáky, Miklós Fári, Éva Domokos-Szabolcsy
Dátum:
2019
Megjegyzések:
Jerusalem artichoke is widely known for its inulin-enriched tubers. Recently the opportunity has been arisen to involve the whole plant in biorefinery concept due to its high lignocellulose biomass and tuber production. This paper focuses on the repeatedly harvestable green biomass of Jerusalem artichoke. Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization/Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS) was applied to identify the phytochemicals in Jerusalem artichoke leaf protein concentrate (JAPC) thermally extracted from green biomass of three clones, i.e., Alba, Fuseau and Kalevala. Amino acid and fatty acid profiles as well as yield of JAPC were also analyzed. The UHPLC-ESI-MS analyses showed that no toxic phytochemicals were identified in JAPC. The results revealed, also, that JAPC is not only essential-amino acids-rich but also contains substantial amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (66-68%) such as linolenic and linoleic acids. Linolenic acid represented 39-43% of total lipid content; moreover, the ratio between {omega}-6 and {omega}-3 essential fatty acids in JAPC was ~0.6: 1. Using UHPLC-ESI-MS, the following hydroxylated methoxyflavones were for the first time identified in JAPC, i.e., dimethoxy-tetrahydroxyflavone, dihydroxy-methoxyflavone, hymenoxin and nevadensin. These compounds are medically important since they are referred to as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. Also, liquiritigenin - estrogenic-like compound - was identified in JAPC alongside the following terpenes, i,e., loliolide and dihydroactinidiolide. However, no remarkable differences of phytochemicals, fatty acids and amino acids composition were seen among Jerusalem artichoke clones. The green biomass of tested clones ranged between 5 to 5.6 kg m-2 and JAPC yield varied from 28.6 to 31.2 g DM kg-1 green biomass with total protein content, on average, of 33.3%. According to our knowledge, this paper is the first scientific report highlighting bioactive substances in JAPC such as PUFA phytochemicals. These results clearly prove that JAPC is a valuable product which can direct towards human and animal nutrition as well as it can serve as basic material for different industrial purposes.

Genetic analysis of endangered Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) from Myanmar / Kusza Szilvia, Suchentrunk Franz, Pucher Herwig, Mar Khyne U., Zachos Frank E.
Dátum:
2016
ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
Myanmar harbours the second largest population of the endangered Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). To date, however, only few Myanmar elephants have been analysed genetically. We aimed at closing this gap by performing the so far most comprehensive such analysis on 78 working elephants from two adjacent camps based on mtDNA control region sequences and 11 nuclear microsatellite loci. Heterozygosity was comparatively low (overall HO and HE of 0.55 and 0.59, respectively) but mtDNA diversity was high (overall haplotype and nucleotide diversities of 0.89 and 0.011, respectively), due largely to the presence of both mitochondrial lineages (alpha and beta) known to occur in Asian elephants. The fact that 13 of the 23 haplotypes found in this study were novel emphasizes the importance of Myanmar for the conservation of this endangered species. Both markers yielded evidence for a single panmictic population in the region. Demographic tests produced some indication of a recent bottleneck in the microsatellite dataset, but the mtDNA sequences did not show either a signature of recent expansion or bottlenecks. The relative frequencies of the two haplogroups were distinctly biased towards the beta-clade, which may not be in line with the previous hypothesis that Myanmar is the geographic origin of the alpha-clade.
