Megjegyzések:Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), one of the most commercially important tree species in western North America and one of the most valuable timber trees worldwide, was introduced to Europe in 1827. It became a major species for afforestation in Western Europe after WWII, currently grows in 35 countries on over 0.83 million ha and is one of the most widespread non-native tree species across the continent. A lower sensitivity to drought makes Douglas-fir a potential alternative to the more drought-sensitive Norway spruce so its importance in Europe is expected to increase in the future. It is one of the fastest growing conifer species cultivated in Europe, with the largest reported dimensions of 2.3 m in diameter and 67.5 m in height. Pure stands have high productivity (up to 20 m3 ha-1a-1) and production (over 1000 m3 ha-1). The species is generally regenerated by planting (initial stocking density from less than 1000 seedlings ha-1 to more than 4000 ha-1), using seedlings of European provenance derived from seed orchards or certified seed stands. As the range of end-uses of its wood is very wide, the rotation period of Douglas-fir is highly variable and ranges between 40 and 120 years. When the production of large-sized, knot-free timber is targeted, thinnings are always coupled with pruning up to 6 m. There is an increasing interest in growing Douglas-fir in mixtures and managing stands through close-to-nature silviculture, but the species' intermediate shade tolerance means that it is best managed through group selection or shelterwood systems.

Cím:Ecology and Management of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.) in Hungary / Károly Rédei, Marianna Takács, Tamás Kiss, Zsolt Keserű
Dátum:2019
ISSN:1847-6481 1849-0891
Megjegyzések:Background and Purpose: Black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) was one of the first forest tree species introduced and acclimated from North America to Europe in the 17th century. Although native to North America, black walnut is now naturalized and widely planted throughout Europe. In Hungary, this species has played an important role in forest management. Black walnut can grow on various sites, but careful site selection and well-planned management practices are needed to produce successful plantations. Due to the increasing interest in black walnut growing in many countries this study complied with the aim of giving a summary on the base of research and improvement connected with the species over the past decades. Materials and Methods: Black walnut produces a well-closing, favourably differentiated stand structure in consequence of the great genetic diversity of single trees. It utilizes well the leaks of the tending cuttings. In this manner, because of its quick height growth, the systematic, individual selective method can be favourably combined with more frequent stem number reduction. The objective of tending should be to produce a high proportion of good quality saw logs from stands of yield class I, II, III and IV, and some other smaller-dimension industrial wood from stands of yield class V and VI. Conclusions: In Hungary, black walnut is one of the most valuable exotic tree species, mainly because of its wood excessively used in furniture industry. Black walnut is used in furniture industry both as solid wood and veneer. This species is among the most expensive furniture woods in the world due to its appealing surface figure and colour. Its wood is also used for making musical instruments, turned and carved ornaments, statues and marquetry. Black walnut stands are to be important in carbon sequestration, soil stabilization, and water quality protection as well.

Cím:Practice-Oriented Yield Table for White Poplar Stands Growing under Sandy Soil Conditions in Hungary / Károly Rédei, Zsolt Keserű, János Rásó
Dátum:2012
Megjegyzések:Background and purpose: White poplar (Populus albaL.) and its most important natural hybrid, the grey poplar(Populus x canescens SM.) are native tree species inHungary, covering 3.2% of the forested area. Thanks totheir favourite silvicultural and growth characteristics aswell as the wood utilization possibilities, their presentarea is increasing continuously. The most important taskahead of Hungarian poplar growers is to improve thequality and to increase the quantity of poplar stands forwood production. To determine their growth rate andyield as exactly as possible, a yield table has been constructedwhich is based on the currently applied silviculturalpractice.Material and methods: Chapman ? Richards functionwith three parameters was successfully used as a growthfunction for constructing the height growth model. Thewhite poplar yield table was constructed from datagathered on 50 permanent and 40 temporary plots (cca.500-1000 m2). The age of the stands varied between5 and 45 years. In the course of the stand surveys thekey stand characteristics were measured, and then, onthe basis of data collected, were calculated such majorstand structure features as the average height, diameter(DBH), volume, basal area and stem number givenseparately for the main (remaining), secondary (removal)and total stands per hectare. Results and conclusion: The numerical (tabulated) yieldtable of normative nature presents data given to sixyield classes (base age: 25 years) including the most im-Original scientific paperportant stand structural and yield features expressingin terms of main stand, removing stand (which can beremoved in tending operations) and the total stand. Itis based on the Hungarian applied tending operations'practice. The published yield table has already been utilizedin the field of the relevant forest inventory as well.
