Potential Role of Halophytic Macrophytes in Saline Effluent Treatment / Hegedűs R., Kerepeczki Éva, Gál Dénes, Pekár Ferenc, Bíróné Oncsik Mária, Lakatos Gyula
Dátum:
2010
Megjegyzések:
The growth of the aquaculture industry has been associated with negative environmental impacts through the discharge of raw effluents into the adjacent receiving water bodies. Macrophytes from natural saline lakes, which have adaptability to the high salinity, can be suitable for saline effluent treatment. Eight emergent species from natural saline area were planted in an experimental gravel bed hydroponic mesocosm (GBH) which was treated with effluent water from an intensive fish farm using geothermal water. In order to examine the applicability of the halophytes in treatment processes, we tested the relative efficacy of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), potassium (K), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) removal for the saline wastewater treatment. Four of the eight species, which were Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, Glyceria maxima, Scirpus lacustris spp. tabernaemontani could survive and contribute the experimental treatment.

Megjegyzések:
This study reports the Sicilian occurrence of Elatine gussonei (Sommier) Brullo et al., a rare and endangered species previously known only from Lampedusa, Malta and Gozo. The species was found on three localities near settlements Modica and Ispica (south-eastern Sicily).

Genetic coding algorithm for sense and antisense peptide interactions / Nikola Štambuk, Paško Konjevoda, Petra Turčić, Katalin Kövér, Renata Novak Kujundžić, Zoran Manojlović, Mario Gabričević

Megjegyzések:
Sense and antisense peptides, i.e. peptides specified by complementary DNA and RNA sequences, interact with increased probability. Biro, Blalock, Mekler, Root-Bernstein and Siemion investigated the recognition rules of peptide?peptide interaction based on the complementary coding of DNA and RNA sequences in 3 ?5 and 5 ?3 directions. After more than three decades of theoretical and experimental investigations, the efficiency ofthis approach to predict peptide?peptide binding has been experimentally verified for more than 50 ligand?receptor systems, and represents a promising field of research. The natural genetic coding algorithm for sense and antisense peptide interactions combines following elements: of amino acid physico-chemical properties, stereochemical interaction, and bidirectional transcription. The interplay of these factors influences the specificity of sense?antisense peptide interactions, and affects the selection and evolution of peptide ligand?receptor systems. Complementary mRNA codon?tRNA anticodon complexes, and recently discovered Carter-Wolfenden tRNA acceptor-stem code, provide the basis for the rational modeling of peptide interactions based on their hydrophobic and lipophilic amino acid physico-chemical properties. Itis shown thatthe interactions of complementary amino acid pairs according to the hydrophobic and lipophilic properties strongly depend on the central(second) purine base ofthe mRNA codon and its pyrimidine complement ofthe tRNA anticodon. This enables the development of new algorithms for the analysis of structure, function and evolution of protein and nucleotide sequences that take into account the residue's tendency to leave water and enter a nonpolar condensed phase considering its mass, size and accessible surface area. The practical applications of the sense?antisense peptide modeling are illustrated using different interaction assay types based on: microscale thermophoresis (MST), tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy (TFS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and magnetic particles enzyme immunoassay (MPEIA). Various binding events and circumstances were considered, e.g., in situations with?short antisense peptide ligand (MST), L- and D-enantiomer acceptors (TFS), in low affinity conditions (NMR), and with more than one antisense peptide targeting hormone (MPEIA).

Development and characterization of a FIA system for selective assay of l-ascorbic acid in food samples / Attila Vig, Attila Igloi, Nora Adanyi, Gyongyi Gyemant, Csaba Csutoras and Attila Kiss
Dátum:
2010
ISSN:
1615-7591
Megjegyzések:
An amperometric detector and an enzymatic reaction were combined for the measurement of l-ascorbic acid. The enzyme cell (containing immobilized ascorbate oxidase) was connected to a flow injection analyzer (FIA) system with a glassy carbon electrode as an amperometric detector. During optimization and measurements two sample injectors were used, one before and one after the enzyme cell, thus eliminating the background interferences. Subtraction of the signal area given in the presence of enzyme from the one given in the absence of enzyme was applied for measuring analyte concentrations and calibration at 400 mV. Analysis capacity of system is 25 samples/hour. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was below 5% (5 times repeated, 400 mu mol/L conc.), linearity up to 400 mu mol/L, limit of detection (LOD) 5 mu mol/L, fitting of calibration curve in 25-400 mu mol/L range was R (2) = 0.99.
