Cím:Migration speed and scheduling of annual events by migrating birds in relation to climate change / A. Hedenström, Z. Barta, B. Helm, A. I. Houston, J. M. McNamara, N. Jonzén
Dátum:2007
Megjegyzések:Empirical evidence for changed timing of migration in birds is emerging from both American and Euro-African migration systems. These changes are usually interpreted as a consequence of changes in climate. Responses in timing of migration and breeding may differ among species, and the adaptive significance is not well understood. There is a lack of theoretical understanding about time-shifts in life-history events due to climatic changes. In the present paper, we use 2 separate modelling approaches to investigate the effects of climate change on migration. We first use a simple model of flight speed and foraging to explore which factors may influence migration speed and stopover itinerary. Our second approach derives predictions based on an annual routine model, where behavioural strategies regarding timing of migration, breeding, moult and number of breeding attempts are modelled in an environment comprising 4 locations (breeding and wintering sites and 2 stopover sites). This approach takes account of interrelationships between behaviours and seasons as a step towards realistic modelling of migratory connectivity. Departure from the wintering site is advanced in relation to the advancement of spring if the moult is in summer, but not so for species with a winter moult, while arrival at the breeding site is advanced for both moult scenarios. Timing of breeding and number of successful broods were also affected by spring advancement, while start of moult is relatively unaffected by climate change. These optimal solutions under the modelled set of parameters are discussed with respect to current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying seasonal timing in birds.

Cím:Bioclimatic constraints of European mistletoe Viscum album at its southern distribution limit at past and present temporal scales, Pannonian Basin, Hungary / Attila Molnár, Zsolt Végvári
Dátum:2017
ISSN:0936-577X 1616-1572
Megjegyzések:The present study investigates climatic factors limiting a significant section of the southern boundary of the distribution of the European mistletoe Viscum album. Our study area was located in Hungary, within the Pannonian Basin biogeographical region in Central Europe, where forest and forest-steppe climates meet. We collected data from literature on the local distribution of V. album L. subsp. album (Wiesb.) Vollm., complemented by our own observations, in order to identify the boundary of the local range. We investigated the importance of climatic predictors in identifying the range, using discriminant analysis. July aridity was the best predictor of the limit of the occurrence of the study species, followed by mean July temperature and the sum of air temperature during the growing season. Results based on data from meteorological stations for 1901-1950 and on data from E-OBS grids for 1950-2010 identified similar bioclimatic preferences of V. album subsp. album.

Megjegyzések:European climate change objectives aim to reduce CO2 emissions, promote the spread of renewable energy sources (RES), and stimulate energy efficiency (EE). The situation of local and regional governance is crucial in the implementation of community objectives. A multi-year research project was implemented in East Hungary by the University of Debrecen and Eszterházy University. It focuses on the relevance of local communities in the formation of adequate responses to the fore-mentioned challenges. A broad range of primary data collections (questionnaires and interviews) were implemented in two rural counties of the country. The first objective was to elicit existing plans concerning RES and EE at the municipality level and to measure the rate of public participation in the elaboration of them. Secondly, the scopes of the implemented projects were examined in the target area. According to the results, local leaders seem to be committed to environmental issues, but communities rarely possess energy/climate-change plans and projects. The main motivators of project implementation are financial. Because of poor financial conditions, only EU co-financed projects are realized. As subsidies come through the national government, political factors are crucial. From a governance point of view, national and county levels are decisive, and local specialties are not taken into consideration.

Cím:Multivariate climatic effects and declining avian populations in an alkaline grassland complex / Zsolt Végvári, Zoltán Barta
Dátum:2016
ISSN:0936-577X 1616-1572
Megjegyzések:As shown by recent studies, the population dynamics of many avian species have been affected by global climatic processes. Nevertheless, the number of studies on the effects of multivariate climatic predictors is still rather low. Using a long-term dataset of 19 species breeding in the Hortobágy (Hungary), considered the largest unbroken alkaline steppe in Europe, we estimated the effects of global and local climatic variables on avian population trends. Our results indicate that the population dynamics of several species might be driven by multivariate climatic effects. Specifically, the population trends of long-distance migratory species increasing in the Hortobágy were affected by both the NAO inducing milder climatic conditions in the southern part of Europe and increasing trends in Sahel rainfall. In turn, short-distance migrants reacted to warming winters through population growth. Additionally, negative population trends correlated with climatic parameters in several species of key conservation importance, with unknown causes of decline. In sum, we suggest that a sound understanding of multivariate climatic effects on avian populations is needed to outline more effective management plans that help avoid the erroneous attribution of causes of failure and success in practical conservation.
