Megjegyzések:The evaluation, visualization of environmental data from long-term monitoring and making them accessible in a processed form in user-friendly interfaces on the internet are important tasks of our time. The pollution of groundwater resources in settlements is a global phenomenon, the mitigation of which requires a number of environmental measures. In this study, water quality changes following the construction of a sewerage network were examined in the course of long-term monitoring between 2013 and 2022, during which 40 municipal groundwater wells were regularly sampled. Classifying the monitoring data into pollution categories based on water quality index (WQI) and degree of contamination index (Cd), a high degree of contamination was found in the period before the installation of the sewerage network (2014), as the majority of the wells were classified as contaminated and heavily contaminated. In the monitoring period following the installation of the sewerage network, a significant positive change was found in the case of most of the water chemical parameters tested (EC, NH4 + , NO2-, NO3 - , PO4 3- ). Based on interpolated maps, it was found that an increasing part of the area shows satisfactory or good water quality. This was confirmed by the discriminant analysis as well, as it is possible to determine with an accuracy of 80.4% whether the given sample originates from the period before or after the installation of the sewerage network based on the given water chemical parameters. However, 8 years after setting up the sewerage network, the concentration of inorganic nitrogen forms and organic matter remains high, indicating that the accumulated pollutants in the area are still present. To understand the dynamics of purification processes, additional, long-term monitoring is necessary. Making these data available to members of the society can contribute to appropriate environmental measures and strategies.

Megjegyzések:Microplastics (MP) pollution is an emerging threat to life and the environment. These particles are not restricted to human-inhabited lands but also found in different mountains and glaciers where the human population is relatively low. These MPs make their way to the river ecosystem from glaciers, rains, and municipal and industrial effluents. The current study was designed to highlight MPs' pollution in water, sediments, and fishes of the Swat River: originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain Range. These samples were collected from eight different sites across the river. An average concentration of MPs detected in water samples (305.79 +/- 289.66 MPs/m(3)), fish (12.54 +/- 8.02 MPs/individual), and sediments (588.29 +/- 253.95 MPs/kg). The highest concentration was observed among water samples at Mingora city and the lowest at the confluence point of the rivers near Charsadda being 753.71 +/- 330.08 MPs/m(3) and 57.64 +/- 31.98 MPs/m(3), respectively. MP concentrations in the sediment samples were also the highest at Mingora city (834.0 +/- 367.21 MPs/kg), and lowest at Chakdara (215.0 +/- 20.0 MPs/kg). Among the fish samples, Schizothorax plagiostomus contained the highest while Wallago attu contained the lowest MP concentrations corresponding to 17.08 +/- 8.27 MPs/individual and 5.0 +/- 2.36 MPs/individual, respectively. Fibers were the most prevalent MPs in all the matrices representing 80%, 92%, and 85% of the total MP count in water, sediments, and fish samples. These findings highlighted that freshwater ecosystem are not free from MPs and are as much vulnerable to anthropogenic activities as marine ecosystem. Therefore, need attention not less than marine ecosystem awareness, education, ecotourism, sustainable reduction in plastic use, and strict rules and regulations could be helpful to prevent the anthropogenic menace.

Megjegyzések:Urban soil is an important component of urban ecosystems. This study focuses on heavy metal contamination in soils of Wien (Austria) and results are compared to those for a few large European cities. We analysed the elemental contents of 96 samples of topsoil from urban, suburban and rural areas in Wien along a dynamic (floodplain forest) and a stable (oak-hornbeam forest) urbanization gradient. The following elements were quantified using ICP-OES technique: Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Pb, P, S and Zn. For heavy metals PI (pollution index) values were used to assess the level of pollution. The PI values indicated high level of pollution by Pb in the suburban and rural area of stable gradient and in the urban area of dynamic gradient; moderate level of pollution was indicated for Cd in the urban area of stable gradient. The level of pollution was moderate for Co in the suburban and rural area of the stable gradient, and for Cu in suburban area of stable gradient, and urban area of dynamic gradient. The pollution level of Zn was moderate in all areas. Urban soils, especially in urban parks and green areas may have a direct influence on human health. Thus, the elemental analysis of soil samples is one of the best ways to study the effects of urbanization. Our results indicated that the heavy metal contamination was higher in Wien than in a few large European cities.

Cím:Air pollution assessment based on elemental concentration of leaves tissue and foliage dust along an urbanization gradient in Vienna / Edina Simon, Mihály Braun, Andreas Vidic, Dávid Bogyó, István Fábián, Béla Tóthmérész
Dátum:2011
ISSN:0269-7491
Megjegyzések:Foliage dust contains heavy metal that may have harmful effects on human health. The elemental contentsof tree leaves and foliage dust are especially useful to assess air environmental pollution. We studied theelemental concentrations in foliage dust and leaves of Acer pseudoplatanus along an urbanization gradientin Vienna, Austria. Samples were collected from urban, suburban and rural areas. We analysed 19elements in both kind of samples: aluminium, barium, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphor, sulphur, strontium and zinc. We found that the elemental concentrations of foliagedust were significantly higher in the urban area than in the rural area for aluminium, barium, iron, lead, phosphor and selenium. Elemental concentrations of leaves were significantly higher in urban than inrural area for manganese and strontium. Urbanization changed significantly the elemental concentrationsof foliage dust and leaves and the applied method can be useful for monitoring the environmental load.

Cím:A meta-analysis on the heavy metal uptake in Amaranthus species / Dávid Tőzsér, Ayash Yelamanova, Bianka Sipos, Tibor Magura, Edina Simon
Dátum:2023
ISSN:0944-1344 1614-7499
Megjegyzések:Metals can accumulate in different parts of plant species in high concentrations, which gives the basis for the plant-based technology called phytoremediation. Among annual species, Amaranthus is a well-studied, potential metal accumulator genus; however, some conflicts are found among published results. Thus, we studied the metal (Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) accumulation potential of Amaranthus plant parts (root, stem, and leaf) by meta-analysis, furthermore, by calculation of bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values. After the extensive literature search and the calculation of relative interaction intensity (RII) values, we found significant accumulation for each metal by Amaranthus individuals growing on contaminated soils compared to plants collected from uncontaminated ones. Differences among plant parts were significant for Cu and Fe, minor for Ni, Pb, and Zn, and negligible for Cd. The BAF values indicated high accumulation in the leaf, moderate in root and stem for Cd, moderate in each plant part for Pb, and very low in each plant part for Fe, Ni, and Zn. We highlight that Amaranthus species are good prospects for metal phytoremediation projects, although, due to specific plant part-metal patterns, special attention should be paid to the harvesting practice.

Megjegyzések:Populus species are well documented for being potentially suitable for phytoremediation purposes regarding their accumulation characteristics. However, published results are contradictory. Based on the data gathered during an extensive literature search, we aimed to assess and revise the metal accumulation potential in the root, stem, and leaf of Populus species growing in contaminated soils, with meta-analysis. We evaluated the influences of pollution level, soil pH, and exposure time on the metal uptake patterns. We found accumulations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn to be significant in each plant part, while that was only moderate for Ni, and limited for Mn. By calculating the soil pollution index (PI), we observed significantly intensive, PI-independent accumulation for Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. A decrease in soil pH significantly increased the uptake of Mn and significantly decreased the accumulation of Pb in the stem. Metal uptake was significantly influenced by exposure time as well; Cd concentration was significantly decreased in the stem, while concentrations of Cr in the stem and leaf, and Mn in the stem were significantly increased with time. These aforementioned findings support a well-founded metal-and-growth condition-specific application of poplars in phytoremediation processes, also triggering further in-depth assessments to enhance the efficiency of relevant poplar-based technologies.

Megjegyzések:Survival of organisms in polluted habitats is a key factor regarding their long-term population persistence. To avoid harmfulphysiological effects of pollutants'accumulation in organisms, decontamination and excretion could be effective mechanisms.Among invertebrates, ground beetles are reliable indicators of environmental pollution. Published results, however, are incon-sistent, as some studies showed effective decontamination and excretion of pollutants, while others demonstrated severe toxicsymptoms due to extreme accumulation. Using ground beetles as model organisms, we tested our pollution intensity-dependentdisposal hypothesis for five pollutants (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) among four soil pollution intensity levels (low, moderate, high, and extreme) by categorical meta-analysis on published data. According to our hypothesis, decontamination and excretion ofpollutants in ground beetles are effective in lowly or moderately polluted habitats, while disposal is ineffective in highly orextremely polluted ones, contributing to intense accumulation of pollutants in ground beetles. In accordance with the hypothesis,we found that in an extremely polluted habitat, accumulation of Cd and Pb in ground beetles was significantly higher than inlowly polluted ones. These findings may suggest the entomoremediation potential of ground beetles in an extremely pollutedenvironment.

Megjegyzések:We tested the suitability of Salix viminalis forphytoextraction with the analysis of selected elements in soil, root, and leaf, and by visual tree condition assessment in anarea with varying levels of contamination. Bioconcentrationfactor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were used to assessthe phytoextraction potential of willows. The middle part ofthe study area was strongly contaminated, while the northernand southern parts were moderately contaminated. We foundincreasing element concentrations toward deeper layers. Meanconcentrations of elements in roots were similar among thethree parts, while in leaves the highest concentrations werefound in the strongly contaminated part of the study area.Tree condition scores were the lowest in the strongly contaminated part of the study area, which was caused by Al, Ca, K, Mg, Ni, Sr, and Zn concentration. These elements induced leafdisease and leaf feeders. The highest BCF values were foundfor Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in root, and for Cd and Zn in leaves, indicating that S. viminalis had high accumulation potential ofthese elements. Furthermore, TF values were high for Cd, Mn,Sr, and Zn. Our results also demonstrated that soil elementcomposition has major influence on the condition ofS. viminalis individuals. Furthermore, visual condition assessment was found to be a useful tool to assess thephytoextraction potential of trees.
