Cím:Clustering oxbow lakes in the Upper-Tisza Region on the basis of stable isotope measurements / Beáta Babka, István Futó, Szilárd Szabó
Dátum:2011
ISSN:0022-1694
Megjegyzések:Several times a year the River Tisza floods areas between dikes, fills the oxbow lakes on the floodplain and changes their water. However the water addition in the oxbow lakes does not only take place through flooding; it is also likely that water can seep under the surface through the gravelled layers of the old river-beds, and furthermore, precipitation also plays a role. Our goal with this study is to acquire a full, comprehensive picture of the water addition of the oxbow lakes in the Upper-Tisza Region. Surface and groundwater samples were taken from the River Tisza, the oxbow lakes and the boreholes around four oxbow lakes, and stabile isotope ratios were measured. We can get information on the origin, the evaporation and the state of the waters, and the depth of the water table with the help of 18OVSMOW (%) and DVSMOW (%). During the examination the question we addressed was how oxbow lakes can be classified according to their water addition on the basis of their stable isotope ratios. The results from the Tisza and the oxbow lakes, as well as the results from the oxbow lakes on the reclaimed side and the floodplain are also isolated

Cím:The patterns of potential evapotranspiration and seasonal aridity under the change in climate in the upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia / Gashaw Gismu Chakilu, Szegedi Sándor, Túri Zoltán, Kwanele Phinzi
Dátum:2024
ISSN:0022-1694
Megjegyzések:Evapotranspiration is one of the determinant components of the hydrological process, highly influenced by climate change due to the increase in atmospheric temperature at global and regional scales. This study was designed to evaluate the extent to which climate change affects the Potential Evapotranspiration (PET) and the consequent Aridity Index (AI) in the high-emission scenario of Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) in the Gilgel Abay, Ribb, Gumara, and Megech watersheds using six Global Climate Models in the 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100 relative to the 1971-2000 (baseline period). The average PET is simulated using the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. Penman-Monteith and Hargreaves methods were used in the computation of PET using the water balance technique, and the Hargreaves method was found more efficient in calibration and validation processes. The Aridity Index (AI) of watersheds is calculated using the ratio of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. The study revealed that the change in annual average PET is showing an increasing pattern in the three time periods, and the highest rate of changes in Megech, Gilgel Abay, Ribb, and Gumara, watersheds are 16.66%, 15.53%, 14.68%, and 13.46%, respectively in the 2071-2100 time period. Seasonally, the highest rate of change in PET is 20.37% (September), 19.29% (April), 17.46% (March), and 17.02% (March) in the Megech, Gilgel Abay, Ribb, and Gumara, respectively. Similarly, the seasonal highest change in Aridity Index (AI) is also likely to be observed in the 2071-2100 in which in the dry season, it accounts -0.303 (March), -0.299 (March), -0.285 (April), and -0.276 (April) in the Ribb, Gumara, Gilgel Abay, and Megech, respectively, whereas in the rainy season, the change is 0.263, 0.258, 0.238, and 0.211 in the Gilgel Abay, Gumara, Ribb, and Megech, respectively. In general, due to the rising atmospheric temperature, the amount of moisture during dry seasons in the headwater catchments of the upper Blue Nile basin is expected to deplete in the 21st century. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use different climate change adaptation mechanisms including adopting suitable physical and biological water conservation techniques to enhance the amount of water stored in the subsurface and joining the groundwater during the rainy season.

Cím:Modeling the spatial distribution of the meteoric water line of modern precipitation across the broader Mediterranean region / István Gábor Hatvani, Alaa Eddine Smati, Dániel Erdélyi, Gábor Szatmári, Polona Vreča, Zoltán Kern
Dátum:2023
ISSN:0022-1694
Megjegyzések:The covariance of stable hydrogen (delta 2H) and oxygen (delta 18O) isotopes in local precipitation (the local meteoric water line - LMWL) serves as a benchmark in isotope hydrological or paleoclimatological applications. However, the isotope hydrometeorological monitoring network is still sparse in many parts of the Mediterranean, and the degree of spatial data coverage is insufficient to address current needs. To remedy this weakness a spatially continuous interpolated geostatistical product of the LMWLs of modern precipitation across the Mediterranean has been developed. The LMWLs of the stations with data for more than four years between 2000 and 2015 were calculated using reduced major axis regression, and then interpolated across the region using statistical and machine learning methods. Random forest interpolation with buffer distance and elevation gave the best performance in the out-of-sample verification, and was thus used to derive the final interpolated product. The slope and intercept of the LMWLs ranged between-5.9 to 8.2 and-3.9 to 16.1%o, respectively. A detailed comparison with previous local/regional estimations showed that the model presented here concurs with those, albeit with minor deviations in certain regions. With the present results, it then becomes possible to assess how well grounded the 'Eastern-and Western Mediterranean Meteoric Water Lines' (EMMWL and WMMWL) for the 21st century are. In the eastern Mediterranean, the current model shows a slope (-6.9) and the intercept (-15%o) concurring with local studies, but does not reproduce the frequently cited benchmark values of the EMMWL; slope: 8, intercept >= 20%o. The EMMWL may be considered an idealized isotope-hydrological benchmark useful in regional studies; nonetheless, it cannot be taken as a valid representation of the actual empirical description of the delta 2H - delta 18O covariance of local precipitation in the eastern Mediterranean. Defining a uniform regional MWL in the western Mediterranean is not supported by the spatial heterogeneity of LMWL parameters based on the present estimations, calling into question the utility of the 'WMMWL' as an isotope hydrological benchmark.

Cím:Estimation of suspended loads in the Danube River at Göd (1668 river km), Hungary / Tóth Bence, Bódis Erika
Dátum:2015
ISSN:0022-1694
Megjegyzések:Sediment rating curves were used to estimate suspended particulate matter (SPM) loads in the Danube River at Göd (1668 river km), Hungary, in conjunction with a sampling program conducted between 2003 and 2012. Contrary to its water quality significance, only a few studies have focused on the annual transport of SPM in this section of the river. Based on the results, we can state that (1) the SRC method (in certain cases with correction factors) provided reliable estimates of the annual SPM loads in this section of the river; (2) the division of the dataset into seasonal or temperature subsets did not significantly improve the estimations, moreover, annual datasets may provide additional hydrologic information on the water year or the annual water regime; (3) large amounts of the SPM were transported during short, but high water discharge periods, hence, calendar based-sampling should be supplemented with event-based sampling, and (4) the SPM load of the river has declined by about 50% over previous decades, which is most likely due to the installation of hydropower plants on the upper (German, Austrian, Slovakian) stretches of the Danube River.
