Megjegyzések:This paper demonstrates how the parallel examination of distributional data and frame semantic information can expose word senses that are not documented in FrameNet. In our case study, we compare the distributional features of the word crime to its properties stored in the FrameNet database also considering dictionary data that we find in three online monolingual dictionaries. Our analysis indicates that crime has senses that are absent from FrameNet. The five senses that we identify can be separated on the basis of (a) frame hierarchies, (b) frame elements, (c) syntactic and semantic data extracted from corpora using lexicographical tools and (d) distributional similarity. Annotated examples are provided to demonstrate each sense.

Megjegyzések:Frame co-membership is a relation between lexical units occurring within the same lexico-syntactic environment and representing the same cognitive structure (i.e., frame). This informal relation is valuable to the construction of predicate-modeled language resources, automatic induction of lexical units and semantic role labeling. However, it requires extensive human effort, which slows the progress of FrameNet (FN) and undermines the construction of similar databases. The current study first addresses the challenge of converting frame membership into a numerical similarity relation. This conversion should facilitate the comparison between frame membership, WordNet-based similarity and distributional similarity. The study then identifies the most statistically compatible measures with frame membership. The proposed measure of degree of frame co-membership (DFCM) is entirely based on the FN database. It embraces the unique features of Frame Semantics and does not account for any frame-external data. Accordingly, it preserves the individual approach of the theory and the distinctive criteria for word grouping. Although DFCM does not reflect the lexical or numerical relations between words in WordNet (WN) or distributional semantics, it is compatible with similarity scores obtained from the WN database and through distributional tools. The results may have considerable implications for the enrichment of FrameNet's lexicon without jeopardizing the precision of the database or maintaining the sole dependence on the manual effort of lexicographers.

Megjegyzések:The basic question of our research is what crop-producing farmers know about PF (precision farming), and how economic value and social factors motivate the acceptance and implementation of PF. We conducted a cross-sectional survey, using standardized questionnaires, in 2018, that was nationally representative of Hungarian crop producers. Besides this, we conducted 30 semi-structured interviews about the meaning of PF, with the farmers who use PF in practice. They defined it as a tool of strategic planning, to serve input savings, using state-of-the-art technologies. Based on the questionnaire, we found that the farmers currently applying PF do not seem to have such a significant impact on the agricultural society that would make others want to move to precision technology, following their example. As a result of the factor analysis, we could differentiate direct and indirect factors. Potential human resources are undereducated, their willingness to improve their knowledge is low, and the level of cooperation ability is low, making it excessively difficult, or even impossible, to acquire the equipment necessary for a technology switch and to purchase the necessary services. It can be concluded that age, production, and technical usefulness carries greater weight over things like monetary factors, productivity of cultivated land, knowledge capital, and willingness of Hungarian farmers to cooperate.

Megjegyzések:This paper seeks to explore and explain some of the distant causes of the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89. It argues that without the fundamental change in English public opinion at the beginning of the 1670s, the Glorious Revolution - which was an Anglo-Dutch achievement - would have been impossible. It discusses the foreign policy of Charles II, the consequences of the third Anglo-Dutch War and some domestic developments, which all combined to change the way well-informed people in England perceived continental affairs. The article also touches upon the role of coffeehouses in the development of a public sphere in later Stuart England.
