Megjegyzések:The paper addresses the issue of the extent to which cultural similarity is reflected in English and Hungarian conventional metaphors related to the source domain HORSE. Bilingual dictionary data seem to show a rather lower degree of equivalence in imagery than expected between English and Hungarian figurative expressions. Hungarian corpus data support the lexicographic evidence. Idiomatic expressions originate in everyday human experience, especially past rather than current, but knowledge of previous discourse, intertextuality and other aspects of culture are also relevant.

Megjegyzések:This paper presents two different theoretical models of idioms and illustrates how the researcher's approach determines the treatment of figurative meaning, in particular the assignment of senses to idiom components. Corpus data are used to retrieve variant forms of kick the bucket to assess the degree of frozenness and relate the findings to the models presented.

Megjegyzések:Some sources trace the idiom put a damper/dampener on back to either the HEAT/FIRE or the SOUND domain. Damper is said to have originally referred to either a metal plate that regulates the air supply in a chimney or a device that stops the vibration of a piano string. Diachronic corpus evidence suggests that the sense ♭something that moistens' of damper was metaphorically extended in the context of be, cast and throw and developed the meaning ♭somebody/something that depresses the spirits' based on the conceptual metaphor EMOTIONAL INTENSITY IS HEAT/FIRE. The ♭draught regulator' and ♭(piano) sound reducer' senses are more recent developments, and the variant dampener is much more recent.

Megjegyzések:The paper takes as a starting point Hamblin and Gibbs's (1999) claim that kick alone already had the sense 'die' before it was used in the idiom kick the bucket, and this may be the case with verbs in other nondecomposable expressions. The idioms provided by Hamblin and Gibbs (1999) are examined for attestations in OED and the dates are compared with the dates of matching meanings of the verbs to see whether the verb with the same sense emerged before the idiom. The verb is considered to have a matching sense if it is the same as the holistic sense of the expression (where this sense cannot be distributed over the components) or the sense of the verbal part of the idiom (where the idiom is decomposable). It has been found that the verbs of some idioms (typically decomposable expressions) emerged in a matching sense before the idiom appeared. Kick the bucket is exceptional, since the verbs of nondecomposable idioms do not have senses closely related to the idiomatic meaning.

Megjegyzések:Conceptual Metaphor Theory is a promising model that despite its deficiencies can be used to account for a number of phenomena in figurative language use. The paper reviews the arguments in favour of and against Conceptual Metaphor Theory in terms of the data, methodology and content. Since the model focuses on regularities, it is less useful in the study of idioms, where irregularities are also found. It has, however, enormous potential as it integrates corpus- and discourse-driven findings
