Cím:Central Role of Phenanthroline Mono-N-oxide in the Decomposition Reactions of Tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) and -iron(III) Complexes / Gábor Bellér, Gábor Lente, István Fábián
Dátum:2010
ISSN:0020-1669
Megjegyzések:1,10-Phenanthroline mono-N-oxide (phenO) is a product of the decomposition of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(III), Fe(phen)(3)(3+), and has a slight autocatalytic effect on the overall reaction The mechanism is proposed to involve Fe(phen)(3)(4+) as a minor intermediate. The addition of phenO significantly influences the kinetic features of the decomposition of Fe(phen)(3)(3+) and the oxidation of Fe(phen)(3)(2+) by HSO5- The autocatalytic decomposition explains the difficulties in the preparation of Fe(phen)(3)(3+) and may contribute to exotic kinetic phenomena studied using Fe(phen)(3)(3+)/Fe(phen)(3)(3+) as a supposedly innocent indicator.

Megjegyzések:Chelating dithiolate ligands-e.g., mtp from 2-(mercaptomethyl)thlophenol, edt from 1,2-ethanedithiol, and pdt from 1,3-propanedithiol-stabilize high-valent oxorhenium(V) against hydrolytic and oxidative decomposition. In addition to the dithiolate chelating to a single rhenium, one sulfur forms a coordinate bond to the other rhenium. In one arrangement this gives a dimer with a nearly planar diamond core with different internal Re-S distances. The new compounds are {MeReO(edt)}(2) (2) and {MeReO(pdt)}(2) (3), which can be compared to the previously known {MeReO(mtp)}(2) (1), Another mode of synthesis leads to {ReO}(2)(mtp)(3) (5) and {ReO}(2)(edt)(3) (6). They, too, have similar Re2S2 cores that involve donor atoms from two of the dithiolate ligands; the third dithiolate chelates one of the rhenium atoms. Gentle hydrolysis of 1 affords [Bu(n)4][{MeReO(mtp)}(2)(mu-OH)] (7) in low yield, It appears to be the first example of this structural type for rhenium. The use of dithioerythritol as a starting material allowed the synthesis of a dioxorhenium(VII) compound, {MeReO2}(2)(dte) (8). Its importance lies in understanding the role such compounds are believed to play as intermediates in oxygen atom catalysis. Ligation of the dimers 1-3 converts them into monomeric compounds, MeReO(dithiolate)L. These reactions go essentially to completion for L = PPh3, but reach an equilibrium for L = NC5H4R. With R = 4-Ph, the values of K/10(3) L mol(-1) for the reactions (1-3) + 2L = 2MeReO(dithiolate)L are identical within 3sigma: 1.15(3) (1), 1.24(4) (2), and 1.03(16) (3), The rates of monomer formation follow the rate law -d In [dimer]/dt = k(a)[L] + k(b)[L](2). These trends were found: (1) phosphines are slow to react compared to pyridines, (2) the edt dimer 2 reacts much more rapidly than 1 and 3. Dimer 1 and MeReO(mtp)PPh3 both catalyze oxygen atom transfer: PicO + PPh3 - Pic + Ph3PO. Compound 1 is ca. 90 times more reactive, which can be attributed to its lability toward small ligands as opposed to the low rate of displacement of PPh3 from the mononuclear catalyst, The kinetics of this reaction follows the rate law -d[PicO]/dt = k[PicO][1]/{1 + kappa[PPh3]}, with k = 5.8 x 10(6) L mol(-1) s(-1) and kappa = 3.5 x 10(2) L mol(-1) at 23 degreesC in benzene. A mechanism has been proposed to account for these findings.

Cím:Kinetics and mechanism of complex formation reactions in the iron(III)-phosphate ion system at large iron(III) excess. Formation of a tetranuclear complex / Gábor Lente, M. Elizabeth A. Magalhães, István Fábián
Dátum:2000
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:The kinetics and mechanism of the iron(III)?phosphate ion reaction were studied at large iron(III) excess using the stopped?flow method at 10.0 ?C in 1.0 M NaClO4. In the first few hundred milliseconds of the reaction, the formation of a novel tetranuclear complex was confirmed. The following composition is proposed for the new species:? Fe4(PO4)(OH)2(H2O)167+. According to detailed kinetic studies, the formation of this species is first order with respect to Fe2(OH)2(H2O)84+ and H2PO4- and presumably proceeds via a dinuclear intermediate species. At longer reaction times slow dissociation of the tetranuclear complex controls the formation of the thermodynamically favored Fe(PO4)(H2O)5 complex. The overall reaction was interpreted in terms of the following reactions:? Fe2(OH)2(H2O)84+ ? 2Fe3+mn; Fe2(OH)2(H2O)84+ + P(V) ? Fe2PV; Fe2PV + Fe2(OH)2(H2O)84+ ? Fe4PV; Fe3+mn + P(V) ? Fe(PO4)(H2O)5. (Fe3+mn = Fe(H2O)63+ + Fe(OH)(H2O)52+; P(V) = H3PO4 + H2PO4-; Fe2PV = Fe2(HPO4)(OH)(H2O)83+; Fe4PV = Fe4(PO4)(OH)2(H2O)167+.) The pH dependence and relevant rate and equilibrium constants are reported for the individual reaction steps.

Cím:Kinetics and mechanism of the monomerization of a Re(IV) dithiolato dimer with monodentate ligands. Electronic and steric effects / Gábor Lente, Ilia A. Guzei, James H. Espenson
Dátum:2000
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:The sulfur-bridged dimeric dithiolato rhenium(V) chelate (D), derived from 2-mercaptothiophenol, was monomerized to give (M?L) in benzene upon reaction with various neutral and anionic monodentate ligands (L) such as pyridine and its substituted derivatives, triarylphosphines, dimethyl sulfoxide, 4-picoline-N-oxide, and halide ions. The kinetic observations can readily be interpreted for all ligands by a unified mechanism in which the initial fast formation of a 1:1 (DL) and 1:2 (DL2) adduct is followed by the slow monomerization of each species so formed. The use of different ligands gave insight into different steps of the same multistep mechanism. The kinetics of ligand exchange between free L and the monomeric complexes was also studied; an associative pathway has been proposed to interpret the results. The crystal structures of two new monomeric ML complexes (with L = 4-acetylpyridine and 1,3-diethylthiourea) are reported.

Cím:Kinetics and mechanism of oxygen transfer to methyloxo(dithiolato)rhenium(V) complexes / Gábor Lente, James H. Espenson
Dátum:2000
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:The kinetics and mechanism of the reactions of the dimeric and monomeric methyloxo(dithiolato)rhenium(V) complexes [(o-SC6H4CH2S)Re(O)CH3](2) and [(o-SC6H4CH2S)PyRe(O)CH3] (Py = pyridine) with XO, sulfoxides, and pyridine N-oxides are studied. In these reactions, an oxygen atom from XO is transferred to rhenium, from which it later removed. A reaction scheme is proposed to interpret the kinetic data. This scheme features the formation of a monomeric (sulfoxide)- or (pyridine N-oxide)(dithiolato)methyloxorhenium(V) complex followed by its bimolecular oxidation in a rate-controlling step. Several sulfoxides (methyl, methyl phenyl, and substituted diphenyl) all react at similar rates. Activation parameters are determined for dimethyl sulfoxide and di-4-tolyl sulfoxide from temperature-dependent studies. The reactions with pyridine N-oxides show autocatalysis in which the catalyst is confirmed to be pyridine formed in the reactions.

Dátum:2000
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:A novel dimeric rhenium(IV) complex, [Re-2(SCH2CH2S)(4)], and a monomeric methyloxorhenium(V) complex, [CH3ReO(SCH2CH2S)PPh3], were synthesized from methyloxorhenium(V) complexes and characterized crystallographically. The structure of [Re-2(SCH2CH2S)(4)], the formation reaction of which showed surprising demethylation conceivably through the homolytic cleaveage of the rhenium-carbon bond, features distorted trigonal prismatic coordination of sulfurs around the metal center and a rhenium-rhenium triple bond. A revised structure, [Tc-2(SCH2CH2S)(4)], is proposed for a related technetium complex, originally identified as [Tc-2(SCR2CH2S)(2)(SCH=CHS)(2)] (Tisato et al. Inorg. Chem. 1993, 32, 2042). Additionally, a new compound, CH3Re(O)(SPh)(2)PPh3, was prepared.

Cím:Ligand substitution kinetics of the iron(III) hydroxo dimer with simple inorganic ligands / Gábor Lente, István Fábián
Dátum:2002
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:The kinetics and mechanisms of ligand substitution reactions of the iron(III) hydroxo dimer, Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(8)(4+), with various inorganic ligands were studied by the stopped-flow method at 10.0 or 25.0 degreesC in 1.0 M NaClO4. The transient formation of the following di- and tetranuclear complexes was confirmed: Fe-2(OH)SO43+, Fe-2(OH)H2PO24+, Fe-2(OH)HPO33+, Fe-2(OH)SeO33+, and Fe-4(AsO4)(OH)(2)(7+). The catalytic effect of arsenic(III) on the hydrolytic reaction of iron(III) was also attributed to the formation of a dinuclear complex at very low concentration levels. Fast formation and subsequent dissociation of the multinuclear species into the corresponding mononuclear complexes (FeL) proceed via parallel reaction paths which, in general, show composite pH dependencies. The appropriate rate laws were established. The reactions of the different ligands occur at very similar rates, though the uninegatively charged singly deprotonated form reacts about 1 order of magnitude faster than the neutral form of the same ligand. The results can conveniently be interpreted in terms of a dissociative interchange mechanism which postulates the formation of an intermediate complex in which the ligand is coordinated to only one Fe(III) center of the hydroxo dimer. In a subsequent fast step, the ligand forms a bridge between the two metal ions by replacing one of the OH groups. The dissociation of the dinuclear complex into FeL most likely proceeds via the same intermediate.

Cím:Effect of Dissolved Oxygen on the Oxidation of Dithionate Ion : Extremely Unusual Kinetic Traces / Gábor Lente, István Fábián
Dátum:2004
ISSN:0020-1669 1520-510X
Megjegyzések:The effect of dissolved oxygen on the acid-dependent disproportionation of dithionate ion (S2O62-) and its oxidation with a number of reagents (I2, Br2, I3-, Br3-, IO3-, BrO3-, IO4-, MnO4-, Cr(VI), Ce(VI), and H2O2) were studied. Dithionate ion is remarkably inert at room temperature, and heating to elevated temperatures (50?90 °C) was necessary to observe detectable reaction rates in all of these processes. It was confirmed that dithionate ion is never oxidized directly; its redox reactions are zeroth-order with respect to the oxidizing agent and proceed through disproportionation and subsequent fast oxidation of the sulfur(IV) formed. The effect of dissolved oxygen is attributable to its reaction with sulfur(IV) produced in the disproportionation. This autoxidation occurs only with a catalyst. Cerium(III) and iodide ions were shown to catalyze the autoxidation, and their effect on the kinetic traces was studied. In a few cases, highly unusual kinetic traces, such as straight lines with sharp break points, inverted parabolas, and a combination of these, were detected and successfully interpreted in terms of simple kinetic and stoichiometric considerations.
