Aim: Our institute as a consortium member plans to build a demonstration version of a full ring small animal PET scanner. The software system attending this device has to accommodate full 3D- and conventional 2D reconstruction algorithms. For the huge calculation and storing capacity required by 3D methods demand development a parallel environment capable image registration software library. Material and methods: We formed a test environment - including mathematical phantoms and a Monte-Carlo based simulator - with which the implemented algorithms can be validated even in the hardware engineering phase. The developed software package is capable of perform a test, that help us to specify a high calculation capability dedicated reconstruction server. Result: With this achievement we managed to realize the principal component of a small animal PET scanner software system that can be used for modern biomedical studies.

Megjegyzések:We recently completed construction of a small-animal PET system- the MiniPET-3-that uses state-of-the-art silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photosensors, making possible dual-modality imaging with MRI. In this article, we compare the MiniPET-3 with the MiniPET-2, a system with the same crystal geometry but conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Methods: The standard measurements proposed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association NU 4 protocols were performed on both systems. These measurements included spatial resolution, system sensitivity, energy resolution, counting rate performance, scatter fraction, spillover ratio for air and water, recovery coefficient, and image uniformity. The energy windows were set to 350-650 keV on the MiniPET-2 and 360-662 keV on the MiniPET-3. Results: Spatial resolution was approximately 17% better on average for the MiniPET-3 than the MiniPET-2. The systems performed similarly in terms of peak absolute sensitivity (~1.37%), spillover ratio for air (~0.15), spillover ratio for water (~0.25), and recovery coefficient (~0.33, 0.59, 0.81, 0.89, and 0.94). Uniformity was 5.59% for the MiniPET-2 and 6.49% for the MiniPET-3. Minor differences were found in scatter fraction. With the ratlike phantom, the peak noise-equivalent counting rate was 14 kcps on the MiniPET-2 but 24 kcps on the MiniPET-3. However, with the mouselike phantom, these values were 55 and 91 kcps, respectively. The optimal coincidence time window was 6 ns for the MiniPET-2 and 8 ns for the MiniPET-3. Conclusion: Images obtained with the SiPM-based MiniPET-3 small-animal PET system are similar in quality to those obtained with the conventional PMT-based MiniPET-2.

Dátum:2013
Megjegyzések:PurposeWithin the Central Nervous System Imaging project (http://www.eniac-csi.org/) of the ENIAC consortium, the need has emerged for a general multimodal visualization platform which facilitates the evaluation of data produced by new enhanced devices developed in the project. Taking advantage of multi-source post-processed data, this software aims to help interpreting complex intramodal relationships. The modalities involved are PET, MRI, EEG, EIT.According to the project proposal, our purpose was to develop a software for interactive user-friendly 2D and 3D visualization of post-processed multimodal medical imaging data. Important requirements were to manage dynamic image data and explicitly support the use of various enhanced brain imaging techniques.MethodsThe input of the software are MR structural data, fMRI and PET dynamic data and activation maps (GLM, ICA), EEG/EIT based static functional maps and dynamic data, other EEG and fMRI related time series (eg. hemodynamic response functions, independent component analysis time courses), volumes-of-interests of segmentation data and EEG/EIT marker positions. Besides conventional 2D image fusion features, the software provides numerous ways to reveal intramodal dynamic relationships. Volumes-of-interests can be delineated manually or automatically aided by various segmentation algorithms or brain atlases [1]. Time series curves can be generated from the image data and on these various operations can be performed (eg. resampling, filters, correlation, convolution, wavelet, multiresolution analysis). Three dimensional surfaces can be reconstructed, visualized and colored by multiple parameters (eg. dynamic functional information). The software system was implemented in C++.Results and conclusionThe program is built upon the MultiModal Medical Imaging software library system (www.minipetct.com/m3i) and runs on Windows 7 and Windows Xp operation systems and various Linux distributions. The hardware requirements of the application match the current average PC configurations. Due to the advanced VOI and time-series analysis features, the comprehensive file IO component and the compatibility with third party software tools, BrainMOD provides a useful user friendly alternative among software tools in medical image processing.

Dátum:2013
Megjegyzések:PURPOSE Graph theory based structural and functional brain connectivity analysis is a novel method providingnew insights into the dynamics and complexity of the brain by modeling it's regional interactions [1].Due to the heterogeneity and dynamic development of the applied mathematical models and analysistechniques the software support of this field is still poorly accomplished [2].Our purpose was to develop a user friendly software system dedicated for the analysis andvisualization of multimodal brain connectivity data based on EEG, fMRI and DTI data.METHODSReconstruction of brain networks is modality dependent and can be performed with various state-of-the-art software tools, eg. BrainMOD (www.minipetct.com/brainmod) [3], Matlab and R for fMRI, FSL or DTI and NeuroGuide for EEG-LORETA data. With the aid of the BrainNET Utils software package, these software tools can be easily fitted into a processing pipeline and the resulting connectivity matrices can be loaded into BrainCON. Reconstructed brain networks can be displayed and thresholded interactively. Cost based adaptive techniques, soft-thresholding and cost-integration [5] method was implemented to solve the problem of thresholding and allow population based comparisons. Various methods are present for global (small worldness, efficiency, clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, etc.), modular (community detection) and nodal (strength, efficiency, betweenness centrality, hub scores) analysis of binary and weighted graphs in both individual and population level [4]. Interpreting the results is aided by real-time 2D and 3D "glass brain" visualization techniques and various plots. The software system was implemented mainly in C++ and partly in R.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONThe software encapsulates state-of-the-art mathematical graph analysis methods and enhanced real-time network visualization techniques and provides a new user friendly tool in the field of brain connectivity research. The program is built upon the MultiModal Medical Imaging (M3I) software library system (www.minipetct.com/m3i) and runs on Windows 7 and Windows Xp operation systems and various Linux distributions (www.minipetct.com/braincon). The hardware requirements of the application match the current average PC configurations used in medical image analysis.
