Cím:Cost-benefit analysis of remote sensing data types for mapping mosquito breeding sites / Zoltán Kenyeres, Norbert Bauer, László Bertalan, Gergely Szabó, András Márkus, Tamás Sáringer-Kenyeres, Szilard Szabó

Megjegyzések:Environmentally friendly biological mosquito control by Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis formulations needs appropriate breeding maps. The mapping accuracy depends on the quality of the used remote sensing data. Further, the mapping is expected to be cost-efective. Our aim was to study the efect of the quality of various remote sensing data on the applicability of the maps. We depicted larval habitats by manual interpretation in Quantum GIS 3.16.1 software using remote sensing data of SENTINEL, Google Earth, commercial geoTIFF RGB orthophoto, individual unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) RGB, and multispectral mosaics. Based on our results, after classifcation of the target area by sorting, mixed-use of remote sensing data is required to achieve a highly cost-efcient mapping: RGB aerial photographs with 0.5 m per pixel resolution can be used efciently in areas dominated by grassland habitats, while forest areas need customised footage taken by UAS or drones during the foliage-free period (15 cm per pixel resolution, multispectral technique). Our cost-beneft analysis showed that the aim-optimised method could reduce investment to 6-8% and the cost of data collection to 20-50% of the highest budget. This result is signifcant for all participants of biological mosquito control.

Cím:Key factors in organization of sandy orthopteran assemblages / Kenyeres Zoltán, Szabó, Szilárd, Szinetár Csaba, Takács Gábor, Bauer Norbert
Dátum:2019

Megjegyzések:Orthopterans are important functional elements of ecosystems, in which several factors influence their distribution and density. Factors related to the vegetation, macro- and microclimate have been intensively investigated, although the role of the bedrock and soil in organization of orthopteran assemblages has not been explored sufficiently. Our results showed that general effects, as (1) dry, warm macro- and microclimate, (2) short vegetation, (3) presence of about 30% bare sand surface, are important habitat factors organizing sandy orthopteran assemblages of the Carpathian Basin too. Further we found that optimal climate and vegetation structure is not sufficient for a high species number of sand-specialists. Local assemblages rich in sand elements are related to sand areas characterised by a proportion of the fine fraction of the soil (= small-fine-dust fractions together) of around 80%

Megjegyzések:The ecology of invertebrate steppe species requiring active conservation management has not been explored enough. Stenobothrus eurasius is a characteristic steppe species occurring very frequently in the Siberian and Central Asian grasslands, although on the western edge of its area it is present in small, isolated, endangered relict populations. We examined populations and habitats of St. eurasius in the Pannonian vegetation region to (1) seek predictor variables of its density and (2) explore potentially successful conservation management practices which could be used generally on declining steppe relict species. Our results showed that robust populations of St. eurasius are found in short, edaphic, relict steppe grasslands in which the proportion of coarse sand in the soil is high and which are free of significant disturbance by game (specifically by wild boar). According to our study, the most important approach for the enhancement of declining marginal populations of St. eurasius, existing as an umbrella species of steppe relicts, is to reduce individual numbers of game (mainly wild boar and mouflon) which have increased tenfold regionally in the last few decades (or at least to exclude them from the most vulnerable patches).

Cím:Enhancement of a declining European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) population with habitat restoration / Kenyeres Zoltán, Bauer Norbert, Nagy Lajos, Szabó Szilárd
Dátum:2018
ISSN:1617-1381
Megjegyzések:The European ground squirrel is a vulnerable species in Europe, and a critically endangered species in the north-western part of its range. In Hungary, although there are several robust populations on a European scale, we are also witnessing a process of decline. Local individual numbers of the focal species decreased quickly until 2011, caused by the drastic reduction in the grazing and mowing of its habitat. In response to the decline of the focal species' population, a habitat restoration project was started in 2012 in order to stop and reverse this process. We studied the interventions for habitat restoration (elimination of scrubs and Elaeagnus angustifolia trees, grazing and mechanical mowing) between 2012 and 2015. In the monitoring program the number of European ground squirrel specimens was estimated by the quadrat-method and a small-scale transect survey. Potentially the most effective parameters of vegetation, soil and macroclimate were used as predictor variables. The results of our monitoring study showed that the most significant factors in the differences in the individual numbers were the height of the vegetation, and the depth and percentage of the sand and silt fractions of the soil. The density of Spermophilus citellus was positively affected by the cover of xeric grasses and therophyta plant species, soil depth, the percentage of sand and silt fractions of the soil, and was negatively affected by height of vegetation, cover of scrub, tall-herb plant species, and the percentage of the gravel fraction of the soil. Accordingly, the soil conditions of the target areas should be assessed in advance in order to achieve success in supplying the European ground squirrel population. This could help in the successful planning of interventions and relocation attempts in order to repatriate European ground squirrel populations.
