Dátum:2018
ISSN:0262-6667
Megjegyzések:This study aimed to map water features using a Landsat image rather than traditional land cover. We involved the original bands, spectral indices and principal components (PCs) of a principal component analysis (PCA) as input data, and performed random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) classification with water, saturated soil and non-water categories. The aim was to compare the efficiency of the results based on various input data. Original bands provided 93% overall accuracy (OA) and bands 4?5?7 were the most informative in this analysis. Except for MNDWI (modified normalized differenced water index, with 98% OA), the performance of all water indices was between 60 and 70% (OA). The PCA-based approach conducted on the original bands resulted in the most accurate identification of all classes (with only 1% error in the case of water bodies). We therefore show that both water bodies and saturated soils can be identified successfully using this approach.

Megjegyzések:Landscape aesthetic research that emerged from the second half of the 20th century has become increasingly appreciated and popular in the last few decades. There are two main reasons for this. On the one hand, it was recognized the role of landscape aesthetics in land use and environmental planning, management and conservation. On the other hand, its definition among Cultural Ecosystem Services has made it clear that landscape aesthetics has significant impact on human well-being and there is a need to examine it in the concept of Ecosystem Services and, in particular, Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES). The mapping of landscape aesthetics is mostly based on the exclusive evaluation of objective, biophysical landscape factors. The aim of the research was to create the landscape aesthetic map of Hungary with a novel method based on human perception. For this, a questionnaire survey and a GIS approach were used. In order to better understand the role of factors influencing the aesthetic value of the landscape, value maps separately for land cover and elevation that are decisive for the landscape experience were prepared. To validate the results of the maps, and contribute a better understanding of the interrelationship between CES, a certain tourism product was chosen, and the connection between landscape aesthetics and the offer of rural tourism was examined in Hungary and in the Danube Bend priority tourism development area. Our findings show that there is a difference in the results of the objective (GIS-based) and subjective (questionnaire-based) assessment of landscape aesthetic value with the more important role of elevation in the latter. According to our tourism product-based analysis, which represents a niche approach in its kind, landscape values are higher in the areas with rural accommodation. At the same time, based on the results of the Danube Bend region, it can also be concluded that elevation and land cover together are crucial factors in landscapes considered to be the most valuable in aesthetic terms. The most direct practical application of our research is to orientate further tourism development of the new Danube Bend area designated in 2017.

Megjegyzések:Since 2013, the EU FP7 research project IQmulus encourages the participation of the whole scientific community as well as specific user groups in the IQmulus Processing Contest (IQPC). This year, IQPC 2015 consists of three processing tasks (tracks), from which "Water detection and classification on multi-source remote sensing and terrain data" is introduced in the present paper. This processing track addresses a particular problem in the field of big data processing and management with the objective of simulating a realistic remote sensing application scenario. The main focus is on the detection of water surfaces (natural waters, flood, inland excess water, other water-affected categories) using remotely sensed data. Multiple independent data sources are available and different tools could be used for data processing and evaluation. The main challenge is to identify the right combination of data and methods to solve the problem in the most efficient way. Although the first deadline for submitting track solutions has passed and the track has been successfully concluded, the track organizers decided to keep the possibility of result submission open to enable collecting a variety of approaches and solutions for this interesting problem.

Megjegyzések:Climate change is one of the most important issues of anthropogenic activities. The increasing drought conditions can cause water shortage and heat waves and can influence the agricultural production or the water supply of cities. The Carpathian region is also affected by this phenomenon; thus, we aimed at identifying the tendencies between 1960 and 2010 applying the CarpatClim (CC) database. We calculated the trends for each grid point of CC, plotted the results on maps, and applied statistical analysis on annual and seasonal level. We revealed that monthly average temperature, maximum temperature and evapotranspiration had similar patterns and had positive trends in all seasons except autumn. Precipitation also had a positive trend, but it had negative values in winter. The geospatial analysis disclosed an increasing trend from West to East and from north to west. A simple binary approach (value of 1 above the upper quartile in case of temperature and evapotranspiration, value of 1 below the lower quartile; 0 for the rest of the data) helped to identify the most sensitive areas where all the involved climatic variables exceeded the threshold: Western Hungary and Eastern Croatia. Results can help to prepare possible mitigation strategies to climate change and both landowners and planners can draw the conclusions.

Dátum:2019
ISSN:2352-3409
Megjegyzések:Revealing the driving forces of changes in landscape pattern is a key question of landscape ecology and landscape analysis. Temperature and precipitation as climatic variables have a dominant role in triggering vegetation changes; thus, a database, which contain their interaction, can support the understanding of spatio-temporal changes in vegetation patterns even on a large scale. The dataset provided in this article contain the R-squared values of bivariate linear regression analysis between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (target variable; as a general quantitative descriptor of surface greenness) of the TERRA satellite's MODIS sensor and the climatic variables of the CarpatClim database (predictor variables; maximum monthly temperature, aridification index, evapotranspiration and precipitation). Environmental variables are also included to support further analysis: terrain height, macro regions, land cover classes. The dataset has a spatial projection (i.e. maps) and covers the area of Hungary. Tabular version provides the possibility of traditional statistical analysis, while maps allow the investigation to involve the spatial characteristics of absolute and relative position of the data points. This data article is related to the paper "NDVI dynamics as reflected in climatic variables: spatial and temporal trends - a case study of Hungary" (Szabo et al., 2019).

Megjegyzések:Understanding climate change and revealing its future paths on a local level is a great challenge for the future. Beside the expanding sets of available climatic data, satellite images provide a valuable source of information. In our study we aimed to reveal whether satellite data are an appropriate way to identify global trends, given their shorter available time range. We used the CARPATCLIM (CC) database (1961-2010) and the MODIS NDVI images (2000-2016) and evaluated the time period covered by both (2000-2010). We performed a regression analysis between the NDVI and CC variables, and a time series analysis for the 1961-2008 and 2000-2008 periods at all data points. The results justified the belief that maximum temperature (TMAX), potential evapotranspiration and aridity all have a strong correlation with the NDVI; furthermore, the short period trend of TMAX can be described with a functional connection with its long period trend. Consequently, TMAX is an appropriate tool as an explanatory variable for NDVI spatial and temporal variance. Spatial pattern analysis revealed that with regression coefficients, macro-regions reflected topography (plains, hills and mountains), while in the case of time series regression slopes, it justified a decreasing trend from western areas (Transdanubia) to eastern ones (The Great Hungarian Plain). This is an important consideration for future agricultural and land use planning; i.e. that western areas have to allow for greater effects of climate change.

Dátum:2016
ISSN:1789-7556
Megjegyzések:The remote sensing techniques provide a great possibility to analyze the environmental processes inlocal or global scale. Landsat images with their 30 m resolution are suitable among others for landcover mapping and change monitoring. In this study three spectral indices (NDVI, NDWI, MNDWI) wereinvestigated from the aspect of land cover types: water body (W); plough land (PL); forest (F); vineyard(V); grassland (GL) and built-up areas (BU) using Landsat-7 ETM+ data. The range, the dissimilaritiesand the correlation of spectral indices were examined. In BU ? GL ? F categories similar NDVI valueswere calculated, but the other land cover types differed significantly. The water related indices (NDWI,MNDWI) were more effective (especially the MNDWI) to enhance water features, but the values of othercategories ranged from narrower interval. Weak correlation were found among the indices due to thedifferences caused by the water land cover class. Statistically, most land cover types differed from eachother, but in several cases similarities can be found when delineating vegetation with various watercontent. MNDWI was found as the most effective in highlighting water bodies.

Megjegyzések:Research on spatial and temporal changes of hydrological elements of the environment is an important issue of most emerging tasks due to the possible trends of the climate change. In this study we investigated a catchment (Canal Lónyay-főcsatorna) whichwas situated on the northeastern part of Hungary, in the Nyírségmezoregion. We examined some characteristic features of the hydrological elements (precipitation, surface and ground water). To achieve our aims, data measured in hydro-meteorological stations and groundwater gauging wells between 1950-2005, as well as data measured in water-gauges between 1980-2005 were used. We analysed the datasetwith statistical and GIS methods and we illustrated the results on maps and diagrams. About 540-650 mm precipitation was measured on the watershed of Lónyay canal. The effect of the relief was identified in the regional distribution of precipitation. According to the minimum precipitation map, the driest region was the southwestern part of the Lónyay-watershed area. This fact was the consequence of the relative location of the area in a basin (Carpathian Basin with the surrounding mountains). According to our observations the anthropogenic effects presumably does not exceed the influences of natural processes. The connection between gauging wells far from each other indicates regional scale changes on the watershed area.

Dátum:2016
ISSN:1842-4090 1844-489X
Megjegyzések:Recently, various researches have focused on the environmental condition assessment of oxbow lakes along rivers. In this study we investigated the bed morphology, conductivity and the changes of macro- and microelements in the oxbow, named Kacsa-tó, that was formed by the 45th cutoff on Tisza River, then the results were plotted using GIS softwares. Our aim was to examine the specific electric conductivity and its spatial pattern at the end of the spring flood at 2013. We analyzed water samples collected by a stratified sampling system so as to conclude the extent of overturning. The inflow from the flood resulted lower conductivity values at the extensive SE part than at the distant NW part. Initially the fresh water supply from the flood does not reach the distant parts; thus, the overturning takes place more slowly so the water body replacement of the oxbow occurs constantly. Our results show that at the beginning of the flood the oxbow could be divided into two distinct heterogeneous parts. Based on the conductivity values at time of the measurement, we found that the overturning is not yet complete.
