Megjegyzések:The extensive destruction of arable lands by the process of lateral bank erosion is a major issue for the alluvial meandering type of rivers all around the world. Nowadays, land managers, stakeholders, and scientists are discussing how this process affects the surrounding landscapes. Usually, due to a land mismanagement of agroforestry activities or urbanization plans, river regulations are designed to reduce anthropogenic impacts such as bank erosion, but many of these regulations resulted in a degradation of habitat diversity. Regardless, there is a lack of information about the possible positive effects of meandering from the ecological point of view. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate a 2.12 km long meandering sub-reach of Sajó River, Hungary, in order to evaluate whether the process of meander development can be evaluated as a land degradation processes or whether it can enhance ecological conservation and sustainability. To achieve this goal, an archive of aerial imagery and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)-surveys was used to provide a consistent database for a landscape metrics-based analysis to reveal changes in landscape ecological dynamics. Moreover, an ornithological survey was also carried out to assess the composition and diversity of the avifauna. The forest cover was developed in a remarkable pattern, finding a linear relationship between its rate and channel sinuosity. An increase in forest areas did not enhance the rate of landscape diversity since only its distribution became more compact. Eroding riverbanks provided important nesting sites for colonies of protected and regionally declining migratory bird species such as the sand martin. We revealed that almost 70 years were enough to gain a new habitat system along the river as the linear channel formed to a meandering and more natural state.

Cím:Soil degradation induced by lateral erosion of a non-regulated alluvial river (Sajó River, Hungary) / Bertalan László, Szabó Gergely, Szabó Szilárd
Dátum:2016
Megjegyzések:The aim of this study was to reveal the spatial and temporal changes of the lateral migration of Sajó River and reveal their impacts on the rates of soil degradation that affects the surrounding agricultural lands.Sajó (in Hungarian) or Slaná (in Slovakian) is a Slovakian-Hungarian river with a total length of 229 km, of which 124 km is situated in the Hungarian territory. In Slovakia it is the main river of the southern part of Slovenské Rudohorie Mountains, part of the Cerová vrchovina uplands and the Rimavská kotlina hollow basin. Its source is situated in the Stolica Mountains range of the Slovak Ore Mountains. It flows through the Slovak town Ro?z?nava and the Hungarian city Miskolc. According to the rate of regulated sections the Sajó River is unique since only the one third of the Hungarian section has anthropogenic intervention. Long term morphological changes of Sajó River were evaluated on the basis of maps, aerial photographs (1952, 1956, 1972, 1988, 2000, 2005 and 2011) and the 1:10.000 scale topographic map of Hungary (1980). In every investigated periods the bank edges were vectorized in ArcGIS then variables (i.e. centerline length, width, chord length, amplitude, sinuosity, radius of curvature) of channel planform morphometry were calculated for each bend. Overlaying banklines in each consecutive periods allowed us to calculate lateral migration polygons with the purpose of analyzomg the spatio-temporal changes in the rates of erosion and accretion. In 4 selected bends and meanders detailed UAV surveys were performed between April 2014 and August 2016 to identify the rate of bank retreat. The centerline analysis of Sajó River shows an outstanding shortening between 1952 and 1980 related to the regulation works at few bends performed by several industrial purposes. After 1980 the centerline-length started to increase and we suggested that it could be a reason of new meander-development along the river. Our results showed that the channel width had a decreasing trend; while the bend length increased as well as the sinuosity since 1980 due to meander development. However, the number of bends increased in every sections but their evolutionary state increased with a lesser rate. It turned out, based on the analysis of the long-term lateral migration polygons, that the rate of erosion and the soil degradation of agricultural lands had fluctuated and there is an increase in the trend from 2000 (9 ha/year was measured between 2005 and 2011). Mainly the higher rate of erosion is connected to the free-forming meanders and these bends are in agricultural use; thus, this process cause substantial damage of property.According to the results of UAV monitoring the short term development of the selected bends and meanders and the rate of lateral erosion was very active, 4.5 meters/year (1952-2016) and in some places about 2.4 meters/month while the maximum was 31 meters in 14 months. Outstanding bank failure events also occurred, especially in Sajószentpéter when the spring flooding of 2016 resulted approx. 400 m3 material displacement from one bend in a 6 months long interval.

Dátum:2016
Megjegyzések:Vizsgálataink során a meder- ill. kanyarulatfejlődés térbeli-időbeli változását elemeztük a Sajó magyarországi szakaszán. Az 1952?2011. közötti időszakra vonatkozó elemzéseink adatbázisait archív légifotók, topográfiai térképek és digitális ortofotók képezték, melyeken térinformatikai eszközökkel vektorizáltuk a középvízi meder-éleket. A morfometriai mutatók elemzéseivel feltártuk a legintenzívebb oldalazó eróziós rátával rendelkező szakaszokat, melyek helyszínein 2014-től kezdve rendszeres terepi vizsgálatokat is végeztünk.

Cím:Confirmation of a theory: reconstruction of an alluvial plain development in a flume experiment / László Bertalan, Csaba Albert Tóth, Gergely Szabó, Gábor Nagy, František Kuda, Szilárd Szabó
Dátum:2016
ISSN:0014-0015
Megjegyzések:Fluvial geomorphologists have tried to describe the outstanding tectonically affected avulsion process of Tisza River at the Great Hungarian Plain by various theoretical concepts. Flume experiments provide the ability to examine the main characteristic processes of a highlighted surface development theory under controlled settings within an accelerated time scale. Our goal was to reconstruct and refine these hypotheses from a new experimental point of view. Contrary to the previous flume studies focused on a highlighted mechanism, our experiment combined several processes for confirmation purposes. In this study we performed an experiment of the avulsion process mentioned above on a 12 x 5 x 2.5 m flume where a special instrument was planted under the sand layers in order to simulate the vertical tectonic movements. A terrestrial laser scanner was used to record the different stages of the topographic evolution. We shaped the initial surface and executed the main landscape forming processes according to theoretical descriptions then with modifications to examine the similarities and differences between the experimental outcomes and the theoretical evolution. The results of three different types of scenarios proved the key role of the uplifting Nyírség alluvial fan in the channel direction changing process of Tisza River. On the other hand, the role of Bodrogköz area had been questioned. Flume experiments with appropriate equipment can serve as a suitable tool for the reconstruction of surface development theories taking into account several landscape forming processes simultaneously.

Megjegyzések:Several studies investigated the occurrence of fires in Africa with numerical modeling or applied statistics; however, only a few studies focused on the influence of El Nino on the fire risk using a coupled model. The study aimed to assess the influence of El Nino on wildfire dynamics in Africa using the SPEEDY-HYCOM model. El Nino events in the Eastern Tropical Pacific were classified via sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly based on a predefined climatology between 1961 and 2020 for the entire time series of SST, obtaining linear anomalies. The time series of the SST anomalies was created for the region between 5 degrees N and 5 degrees S and 110 degrees W and 170 degrees W. The events were defined in three consecutive 3-month periods as weak, moderate, and strong El Nino conditions. The Meteorological Fire Danger Index (MFDI) was applied to detect fire hazards. The MFDI simulated by the SPEEDY-HYCOM model for three El Nino categories across different lagged months revealed relevant distinctions among the categories. In the case of 'Weak', the maximum variability of fire risk observed at time lags (0, -3, -6, and -9 months) was primarily in Congo, Gabon, and Madagascar. The 'Moderate' pattern had similar characteristics to 'Weak' except for the lag-6 months and its occurrence in the equatorial zone of Africa. 'Strong' showed a remarkable impact in East Africa, resulting in high fire risk, regardless of time lags. Precipitation and evaporation simulations (SPEEDY-HYCOM) indicated that El Nino categories in Africa need particular attention in the central, southern, and southeastern regions emphasizing the significance of lag-0 and lag-6 (evaporation) as well as lag-0, lag-6, and lag-9 (precipitation). The SPEEDY-HYCOM coupled model in conjunction with the MFDI was efficient in assessing climate variabilities in Africa during El Nino events. This model allows the analysis and prediction of wildfire risks based on El Nino events, providing crucial information for wildfire management and prevention. Its simulations uncover significant variations in risks among different El Nino categories and lagged months, contributing to the understanding and mitigation of this environmental challenge.
