Cím:Exploring Biomass Linkages in the Food and Energy Market : A Systematic Review / Christian Barika Igbeghe ; Adrián Nagy; Zoltán Gabnai; Attila Bai
Dátum:2024
ISSN:1996-1073
Megjegyzések:This study delves into the intricate landscape of biomass utilization within the food and energy markets. It entails a systematic review of the existing literature with the aim of unraveling the complexities of the food and energy discourse, especially in the context of significant market factors influencing biomass use for food and energy. We leveraged the Scopus database to examine 73 pertinent scientific articles carefully selected following the PRISMA framework. The articles were analyzed using the advanced qualitative data analytics tool NVivo 12 Plus. Furthermore, we employed the Biblioshiny R-package tool to extract valuable insights from the metadata, unveiling pivotal trends and providing descriptive statistical details. The findings offer comprehensive insights into the debate on biomass utilization from 2010 to 2023, tracing the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. We identify regions that have made notable contributions and highlight those that require increased attention. The analysis underscores the collaborative nature of this field, with 281 authors contributing to 39 different sources. Surprisingly, the observed annual growth rate of -10.93% indicates a potential decline in research output in this field. Nevertheless, the sources identified in our research provide a valuable roadmap for further research exploration of the biomass-food-energy nexus.

Cím:Food, Feed and Fuel : The Place of Biomass in a Sustainable Bioeconomy / Christian Barika Igbeghe, Péter Balogh, Attila Bai
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:This study explores the role of biomass in achieving a sustainable bioeconomy in the context of increasing competition for its use in food, feed, and fuel. The bioeconomy transition aims to responsibly utilize resources to mitigate climate change, address economic growth needs, and promote sustainable development. However, there are significant risks associated with increased biomass imports in the global North, where most countries are net importers, and the potential for over-exploitation in the global South, where many countries have abundant biomass resources. Despite these uncertainties, the dominant discourse on policy promotes large-scale substitution of fossil and mineral resources with biomass-based materials as a feasible goal for achieving a sustainable society. However, there is currently no unanimous framework for assessing the ecological, ethical, or social sustainability of the bioeconomy, highlighting the need for further research and policy development. Also, the technicality and complexity required in balancing the production and consumption of biomass for food, feed and fuel to ensure sustainability in the bioeconomy suggest the need for a bioeconomy-based training module for business managers in the bioeconomy.

Cím:The Role of Sustainability Policies and Energy Transition in Rural Development and Efficient Food Systems / Christian Barika Igbeghe, Attila Bai
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:The phenomenon driving several actions and interventions in our world today including sustainability policies affecting food systems and energy transition can be traced to the Malthusian Theory which opined that demographic changes impact finite resources. Practically, the transition to renewable and sustainable forms of energy has triggered competition over finite agricultural resources and raised concerns for food security. Literally, all food sources either from plant or animal origin have a direct connection to biomass which functions as the major intersection between food and bioenergy nowadays. Based on the foregoing, the study builds on the Sustainable Development (SD) Theory, to contend that sustainable policies that affect energy transition, and food systems, can trigger rural development. Hence, a link between sustainability policies and efficient food systems has been established in previous studies. Several sociological scholars and schools of thought over decades have identified rural areas as the resource base or nature-based powerhouse of any country. Notably, while developed countries have strong sustainability practices that drive efficient food systems and pursue rural development objectives, there is uniformity in literature that developing countries lag. The study observed that while sustainability policies appear to be potent at addressing rural development challenges through the pathway of food and energy resources, the lag in most developing nations can be associated with a poor domestication approach to the policies, lack of effective institutions in managing and monitoring strategic implementation, political instability, and budgetary constraints.
