Megjegyzések:Due to hyperprolificacy in modern pig production, nurse sows are used to nurse surplus piglets. Additional stay in lactation results in loosing back fat thickness which is associated with poor reproductive performance. Therefore, the aim of this research was to characterize and quantify causes of Reproductive Failure (RF) removal and the risk of removal associated with parity. Archived reproductive data was retrieved from a large company database between 2016-2022. Records of 37852 nurse sows culled due to reproductive failure before reaching their next parity were analyzed using SPSS statistics software and Chi-square test used to test between the group differences. The major RF causes were; failure to conceive 30.7%, no heat 23.0% vaginal discharges 19.3%, abortion 11.4%, failed to farrow 8.0% and retained pigs 7.5%.The risk of removal due to fail to conceive was significant (?2=352.480, P<0.001was detected for abortion among parities. RF is an unplanned sow removal reason that requires decision making in an attempt to control it. Understanding the risk associated with each cause of RF removal could help producers plan how to decide on selecting a nurse sows.

Megjegyzések:Reproductive performance in pig production has gained genetic momentum resulting in large litters. Several strategies have been used to raise the number of piglets to address the challenge of a large litter size. This review provides a rationale for employing the nurse sow system as a biological way of handling large litters, exploring its step-by-step processes and its selected impacts. By exposing these steps, pig farmers will use the information to pinpoint their weak points in the chain and customize the procedures to meet their farm-specific goals for improved productivity. The nurse sow system helps to maximize pre-weaning survival by boosting the overall worth of low birth weight piglets. When piglets weaned per sow/year are used as a performance benchmark, nurse sows weaning double litters become economically advantageous. Extended time in lactation for nurse sows gives them an ample time for their uterus to involute before the next pregnancy. However, nurse sows lose their body reserves reflected in backfat thickness from high milk production. Prolonged confinement in lactation deteriorates the physical condition of nurse sows, resulting in leg ulcers and teat damage. Additionally, piglets are more distressed when taken away from their biological sow to a new sow.

Megjegyzések:Nurse sows play a critical role in the pig industry responsible for nursing piglets from multiple litters. Their use is a promising management strategy aimed at optimizing pre-weaning survival. Management protocols in pig production have their own fair of challenges. This study sought to understand challenges that small scale pig farmers in Kenya face in implementing the nurse sow strategy. A survey was conducted during July 2023 among pig farmers who visited the annual Nakuru National Agricultural show where they were able to willfully respond to questions in an interview. Results indicate that ,of the total n= 139 interviewed pig farmers, major challenges in adoption of the strategy was hugely depicted as a feed challenge at n= 108 (78 %) owing to the fact that a nurse sow has to stay more in lactation consuming much feed resources unlike the non nurse sows. Market issue was a second challenge at n=83 (59%) as it was unfavorable to keep nurse sows under the current prevailing market conditions where pig prices and pork products were dissatisfying in relation to the input costs made. Since the use of nurse sows favours highly prolific sows, farmers expressed low litter sizes orchestrated by low prolific pig breeds as a limiting factor. As this information is unique to Kenyan pig farmers, the findings are valuable since they represent the typical manifestation of small scale pig production which accounts for over 80% of pig farming. The research results adds into a pull of knowledge which Kenyan stakeholders can use for policy changes to adopt maximally to the changing dynamics in pig production for increased productivity.
