Cím:Yttrium normalisation: a new tool for detection of chromium contamination in soil samples / József Prokisch, Béla Kovács, Attila J. Palencsár, Ildikó Szegvári, Zoltán Győri
Dátum:2000
ISSN:0269-4042
Megjegyzések:The measurement of chromium and yttrium concentration could give a chance to detect 5-10 times less chromium contamination in soil by using the yttrium normalisation method. The principle of the method is the following: elements such as chromium and yttrium exist naturally in the soil in a strongly bonded form. Therefore, in a noncontaminated area there should be a close correlation between the yttrium and chromium concentrations. If the measured Cr concentration in a sample is not on the Cr?Y trend line then the distance of plotted point from the line indicates the amount of anthropogenic chromium. Anthropogenic chromium can be detected only in the case when the contamination does not contain yttrium. This theory was tested in an agricultural?toxicological field experiment where Cr(VI) was added to the soil. Applying the yttrium normalisation method a much smaller anthropogenic effect was.

Cím:Enhancement of chromium phytoextraction capacity of fodder radish with picolinic acid / L Simon, I Szegvári, J Prokisch
Dátum:2001
ISSN:0269-4042
Megjegyzések:Chromium (Cr) content of uncontaminated surface soils varies from 5 to 1000 mg kg -1. The world mean is 54mgkg? 1. Industrial wastes (electroplating sludges, Cr pigment and tannery wastes, leather manufacturing wastes), municipal sewage sludges and fertilisers etc. may contribute to increase the Cr content of surface soils (Kabata-Pendias and Pendias, 1992; Canali et al., 1997). Phytoavailability of Cr is low and plants grown in uncontaminated soils contain only 0.02?0.2 mgkg -1. Translocation of Cr within the plants is also low: usually a higher Cr content is observed in roots than in leaves, shoots or grains (Cary et al., 1977; Kiekens et al., 1987). Phytoremediation is a novel environmental technology to clean-up contaminated soils or waters with the help of naturally occurring or genetically engineered plants. During phytoextraction metal-accumulating plants are used to transport and concentrate metals from soils into the harvestable parts of roots and above-ground shoots. The harvested metal-enriched biomass could be incinerated, and metals concentrated in ash could be recycled or handled as a hazardous waste (Brooks, 1998). Considering the above facts the aims of our study were to investigate:(i) Cr accumulation and translocation in fodder radish grown in an uncontaminated soil or in a soil artificially contaminated with inorganic Cr (III) salt and with the organic complex Cr (III) picolinate,(ii) effects of picolinic acid on the Cr phytoextraction capacity of fodder radish, and (iii) the effects of the above compounds on the dry matter accumulation of the test plant.
