Megjegyzések:Simple Summary By the 19th century, adequately producing, independent domestic animal breeds had developed in many regions around the globe. However, from the middle of the 20th century they have largely been replaced by high-performing, specialized, single-purpose cosmopolitan breeds. Breed maintenance is an activity aimed at rescuing old breeds from the threat of extinction. This process includes recording the valuable traits of a rare breed, specific diversity conservation selection, and utilization in the original production environment. Additionally, it deals with the history of breeds and the study of their genetic makeup. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the maternal genetic background of two autochthonous sheep breeds in Hungary. The aim of our research was the evaluation of the maternal genetic background of two Hungarian autochthonous sheep breeds of different geographical origin. A major argument for the preservation of endangered animal breeds is their documented past and historical importance. These also include the registration of pedigree data. This is the first study to evaluate and compare Tsigai and Cikta sheep in Hungary. Our investigation is based on two complete sequences of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b gene and control region). Our research was performed on these two sheep breeds with markedly different breed histories and breed characteristics to determine a possible common maternal genetic background, as ultimately the origin of both breeds can be traced back to Asia Minor. Between 2015 and 2017, a total of 203 biological samples were taken using a newly introduced founder sampling method. We found that the prevailing haplogroup B accounted for over 80% of both breeds, strengthening the common ancestral root. However, the pairwise genetic differentiation estimates (K-ST) calculated using the sequence-based statistics for cytochrome b gene and control region were 0.034 and 0.021, respectively (both at level p < 0.05); thus, revealing genetic differentiation in both sequences between the Tsigai and Cikta. We note that the known different history of the breeds is clearly justified by the currently studied deviations in their maternal genetic background.

Cím:The First In-deep Pedigree Analysis of Repatriated Gyimes Racka Sheep for a Sustainable Preservation of its Genetic Resource / Edina Kárpáti, László Gulyás, János Posta, László Sáfár, András Gáspárdy

Megjegyzések:The preservation of endangered domestic animal breeds is a specific area of sustainable livestock farming. In the southern part of the Carpathians, a variant of Zaupel-type (Racka) sheep, which was small in size and resistant to the cold mountain weather, developed at the beginning of the 19th century. In order to preserve this historical variant, it was introduced in Hungary in the early 1990s. The aim of this work is to study the pedigree of the repatriated population of the Gyimes Racka to understand its population structure and to support its future breeding work. The pedigree data (2005-2020) show that the number of founding individuals (Nf) was 3,838, within which the number of maternal lineages was 2,255. The effective number of founders (fe) and the effective number of significant ancestors (fa) in the total pedigree population were higher than in the reference population (n=2,591; 67 and 56 vs. 20 and 14, respectively). The pedigree traced back to a maximum of 2.51 generations with an average of 1.34 complete generations and 1.78 equivalent complete generations on average (in the reference population: 6.05, 2.73 and 3.82, respectively). Of the 16,947 animals registered in the herd book (with an average normalised COI of 1.43 % obtained by log transformation), 3,828 were inbred (6.30 %). As regards the maternal generations, it can be observed that the inbred stage increases steadily and significantly from the beginning to the present eighth generation (from 0.00 % to 9.54 %). The average generation interval between breeding animals was 3.29 years (obtained by log transformation). The sire-progeny paths had shorter (2.92- 3.02) and the dam-progeny paths had longer (3.62-3.70) intervals. The Gyimes Racka population is already showing signs of genetic narrowing during its short conservation period, which calls for attention to stop undesirable trends.

The analysis of population structure in Cikta was ranged between 2000 and 2014. The following parameters were estimated: number of maternal lineages, coefficient of inbreeding, and number of responsible individuals in genetic variability, and generation interval. The processing made it clear that the pedigree of Cikta breed is composed of 3648 individuals. From these, 3176 and 472 (altogether 27 rams and 445 ewes) animals were registered with known and with unknown parents, respectively. Accordingly, the number of families (maternal lineages) found in the herd-book is 445. The average inbreeding coefficient was very low, between 1 and 2%. It can be clearly seen that the genetic variability of the herd booked population is given by 476 individuals which are much less than the factual population number of 3648. The average generation interval was four years. Longer generation interval is typical between ewes and their progenies than rams and their progenies (P<0.05). This is because of the usually longer use of females in breeding. The results, especially the knowledge of maternal lineages are very important. These are helpful in a within-family selection, and for choosing the appropriate individuals for a preserving breeding.
