Cím:Corrective factors for author- and journal-based metrics impacted by citations to accommodate for retractions / Dobránszki Judit, Jaime A. Teixeira da Silva
Dátum:2019
ISSN:0138-9130
Megjegyzések:Citation-based metrics are frequently used to evaluate the level, or quality, of a researcher, or their work, often as a function of the ranking of the journal in which they publish, and broadly tend to be divided into journal-based metrics (JBMs) and author-based metrics (ABMs). Despite wide knowledge of the gaming of such metrics, in particular the Clarivate Analytics journal impact factor (JIF), no suitable substitute concept has yet emerged, nor has any corrective measure been developed. In a post-publication peer review world of increasing retractions, and within a framework of open science, we propose correction factors for JBMs and ABMs that take into account retractions. We describe ways to correct the JIF, CiteScore, the 5-year Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Cited Half-Life, Raw Impact per Paper and other JBMs (Eigenfactor Score and Article Influence Score) as well as the h-index, one of the most widespread ABMs, depending on the number of retractions for that journal or individual, respectively. The existence of such corrective factors could make the use of these metrics more transparent, and might allow them to be used in a world that is adapting to an increase in retractions and corrective measures to deal with erroneous scientific literature. We caution that such correction factors should be used exclusively as such, and should not be viewed, or used, as punitive factors.

Cím:Rejoinder to "Multiple versions of the h-index: cautionary use for formal academic purposes" / Jaime A. Teixeira da Silva, Judit Dobránszki
Dátum:2018
ISSN:0138-9130 1588-2861
Megjegyzések:In a Letter to the Editor, the authors of this paper show, to highlight the practical risks of using the h-index, how academics' data and bibliometric information can be misrepresented. In this rejoinder, we examine the comments offered in letters by Judit Bar-Ilan, Rodrigo Costas and Thomas Franssen, as well as Lutz Bornmann and Loet Leydesdorff, to offer additional insight and critique. This form of open debate about a topic that may potentially affect many academics is an excellent initiative by Scientometrics, and widens the possibilities of holding journal-based discussion forums rather than in informal journal clubs or blogs. We continue to believe that the h-index has some value by offering a crude measure of productivity, but not when used alone. How the accuracy of different h-indexes is calculated, and how h-index-based productivity is associated with academic quality are issues that merit greater research. Finally, we confirm that the Web of Science database search function for compound family names gives erroneous output which can disadvantage those academics with such family names.

Megjegyzések:The h-index, or Hirsch index, named after Jorge E. Hirsch, is one of the few author-based metrics currently available that offers a perspective of the productivity and citation impact of a scientist, researcher, or academic. There are four tools most commonly used to calculate the h-index, all of which depend on separate databases: Scopus, Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate. Using the h-index of the authors of this paper derived from these four sources, it is abundantly clear that scores vary widely and that it is unclear which of these sources is a reliable or accurate source of information, for any purpose. As the use and application of author-based metrics increases, including for official academic purposes, it is becoming increasingly important to know which source of the h-index is most accurate, and thus valid. Although this is not a review of the h-index, some perspectives are provided of the h-index-related literature to place this case study within a wider context of the weaknesses and criticisms of using the h-index as a metric to evaluate scientific outcome.

Cím:Citation inflation: the effect of not correcting the scientific literature sufficiently, a case study in the plant sciences / Jaime A. Teixeira da Silva, Judit Dobránszki
Dátum:2018
ISSN:0138-9130
Megjegyzések:In forestry, the Pterocarpus genus is important for the wood industry as this is a tree that is highly valued for its timber. Biotechnological research on this tree genus therefore needs to be carefully examined, even at the post-publication stage. In this paper, we examine how a near-duplicate copy of a 2004 paper published in a leading plant science and biotechnology Springer Nature journal, In Vitro Cellular and Developmental Biology?Plant, was corrected, rather than retracted. The near-duplicate paper has been cited a total of 16 times, according to the Web of Science, and since 2015, when the paper was first corrected, four citations have emerged. These additional citations for the corrected paper support our claim that the corrected paper should have been retracted, i.e., that the literature was insufficiently corrected, which may have prevented the citation of this near-duplicate paper. Readers who cited the near-duplicate paper after the erratum had been published were either unaware of the correction, or ignored it. Post-publication peer review needs to be more integrated into the publishing framework. We suggest a corrective mechanism by Clarivate Analytics to correct the journal impact factor to avoid citation inflation.
