The authors explore the reasons why there are deficiencies in pre-exchange preparedness of scholarship students, what may be done to correct them and the benefits in making changes for our students, as well as incoming ERASMUS students from abroad. One way to ease the consequences of such problems is proper mentoring activities, enhanced by using informal discussions in groups and informally prepared, extracurricular group projects. Another way to correct these deficiencies is through teaching intercultural communication to students. Subject material of such courses may be tailored to counterweigh students' prejudices and attitudes, which often arise from a lack of information, to bring the students from ignorance to knowledge, as well as from ineptitude to competence, to prepare them to dialogue with strangers. Only through proper preparation may our students reap the maximum benefit from time spent in study abroad, and ensure that visiting students better integrate into the student population here.

Megjegyzések:Competencies, as learning objectives, are the key to planning programs in higher education, if higher education is to remain focused on supplying the fast-changing, globalized labour market with knowledgeable graduates with useable skills. Whether in vocational training or arts and sciences, the paradigm shifts evident in today's market sectors equally encompass a need for educational change in the weight given to foreign language teaching and L2/SP competencies as factors for employability. This paper explores these issues, especially regarding their weight in the Northern Great Plain region of Eastern Hungary, as well as how the Bologna Process will change the manner in which (L2/SP)competency building is addressed.

Megjegyzések:As the 21st century will surely see an increasingly interdependent world, so too will departments giving instruction of ESP need to embed themselves in the greater university curricula, in order to survive. Technical English teaching centers must provide the impetus for pushing university administrations to recognize the necessity of internationalizing their institutions, i.e. to truly begin to provide foreign students with a wide range of study programs here in Hungary, taught in English. The financial, research, and student and faculty exchange opportunities show great promise, should higher education prepare itself to take this prodigious step. Preparations for such a step can involve, in a wide range of activities, especially, but not exclusively, English language teachers. The paper below provides a fundamental definition of globalization and its impacts, and then discusses the opportunities, needs and roles ESP departments should focus on, in order to ensure their proper places in the university community of the future. The paper closes with the detailed presentation of a course which could be integrated into a number of possible M.Sc. degrees, as one example of a way forward for higher education language departments.

The study discusses the first results of a survey on the academic competences of L2 medical students (DEOEC, University of Debrecen) from non-Hungarian countries, who pursue their undergraduate medical diploma courses in English. Of the four basic learning skills, the comprehensive study will focus on students' reading, writing and oral skills. Our research results, derived from the Study Skill Checklist (source: Cook Counseling Centre, Virginia Tech Research University) and interviews, tested reading and language skills and revealed that more than 70% of first year medical students have comprehension difficulties. The findings of focus group interviews suggest that the students encounter several difficulties in their interaction with peers and lecturers, have problems in intercultural communication and with cultural shock in a foreign environment. The present study seeks to set up the model of an effective mental-hygienic care system operated by lecturers and peer helpers.

Several barriers exist to professional ESP teacher development, especially when seen from a background of the need to realign the teacher-teacher and teacher-student relationships presently evident in Hungarian higher education. This need is truly endemic across all disciplines in Hungarian higher education, and ESP teaching is no exception. The authors further argue that inaction would preclude the ability of Hungarian ESP to ready itself for the approaching challenges of CLIL and TTFL course expansion in future curricula.

Content and Language Integrated Learning stands for a pedagogical and curricular paradigm that higher educational institutions across Europe and North America are implementing, in order to, e.g. attract a more diverse, international student body. While the underlying principle of CLIL has a history going back several decades, its manifestations are aimed at remaining innovative. In examining the reasoning behind introducing CLIL, we explore how my home faculty, dealing with agricultural sciences, can better prepare itself to receive students from Central Asia, as is planned in the near future. CLIL present teachers with continuous challenges, one of the most daunting of these is achieving proper basis through intercultural communication for furthering a course's set aims.
