Cím:Impacts of ethnoveterinary medicine integrated with livestock farm technologies on the performance and antimicrobial resistance of indigenous goats in South Africa - A review / Lesedi Mthombeni, Joab Malanda Osotsi, Gabriella Novotni-Danko
Dátum:2024

Megjegyzések:Ethnoveterinary medicine and livestock farm technologies represent a junction of innovation and tradition with the aim to accomplish livestock systems that are resilient, productive, and sustainable to meet 21st century challenges, especially the antimicrobial resistance issue. This article aims to emphasise the impacts of integrating ethnoveterinary medicine with livestock farm technologies on the performance of indigenous goats in South Africa. With the growing concern over antimicrobial resistance in livestock, there is a pressing need for complementary approaches to the health of animals and their productivity. In this review, the aim evaluated whether an integrative approach could offer a sustainable alternative that benefits animal health and productivity while addressing the concerns of antimicrobial resistance. Comparative study designs across multiple indigenous goat farms were used to integrate specific medicinal plants in ethnoveterinary medicine with presentday livestock technologies that are used to monitor the effects on livestock performance indicators and antimicrobial resistance patterns. In the treated populations, the outcomes were indicative of substantial improvements in reproduction and growth rates, and alongside, there has been a notable decrease in the markers of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, it is proposed that through these discoveries, the integration of these traditional and modern approaches not only improves the performance of indigenous goats but also contributes immensely to the mitigation of risks associated with antimicrobial resistance.

Cím:Awareness and adoption of a nurse sow management system among small-scale pig farmers in Nakuru County, Kenya / Joab Malanda Osotsi, Mequanint Gashew, Péter Balogh, Gabriella Novotni-Dankó
Dátum:2024
ISSN:2416-1640 1587-1282
Megjegyzések:This study aimed to assess the level of awareness and adoption of nurse sow management strategies among small-scale pig farmers in Nakuru County, Kenya. The research included a survey of pig farmers who visited the Nakuru Agricultural Show in July 2023. A total of 139 farmers were interviewed within 5 days of the show. The corresponding author interviewed the respondents in a face-to-face engagement, where questions on nurse sow management were initially drafted in English and translated into Kiswahili, i.e. the second language in Kenya. The obtained results indicated that farmers came from two main regions of the county: the northern part (54.7%, 76/139) and the southern part (45.3%, 63/139). Levels of awareness and adoption were insignificant between the two groups (?2, p<0.05). A major obstacle to the adoption of this strategy was identified as feed challenge at 77.7%; (108/139) and market issue at 59.7%; (83/139). This study identified important aspects and limitations that should be considered when developing sustainable productivity development strategies for Kenyan pig farmers. To assist the sustainable growth of small-scale pig production, the authors suggest government measures that shield farmers against exploitation of feed and marketing components, as well as advocating for effective breeding to increase live born

Cím:Characterization of Removal Reasons for Nurse Sows and the associated Removal due to their Extended Lactation Length in Hyperprolific Farrow-Wean Herds / Joab Malanda Osotsi; Peter Balogh; Gabriella Novotni-Danko
Dátum:2024
ISSN:2076-2615
Megjegyzések:This study aimed to characterize and quantify reasons for removal of nurse sows and identify the removal associated with their extended lactation length (ELL). A total of 100,756 removed nurse sows within a period of 2016-2022 from sow herds in Midwest USA were analysed. Reproductive failure was the most common removal reason (?2=8748.421, P<0.001) affecting P 1, P2 and P3 nurse sows. Failure to conceive and absence of estrus were main causes of reproductive failure, (?2 32 =352.480, P<0.001) affecting P1 and P2 nurse sows and P1 and P5 nurse sows respectively. When P2 and P6 nurse sows had an ELL of 0-7d, they faced a high chance (?2 33 =13.312, P = 0.021) of removal due to conception failure and failure to return to heat, respectively. When P2 and P5 nurse sows had an ELL of 8-14d, they were highly vulnerable (?2 35 =59.847, P<0.001) to removal due to failure to conceive and showing heat respectively. Finally, when ELL was at 15-21 days, P4 and P5 nurse sows were more likely (?2 37 =41.751, P<0.001) removed due to failure to express heat, whereas at the same time, P2 and P3 nurse sows experienced same removal threat due to failing to conceive. These results could help producers managing nurse-sow systems.

Cím:Reproductive failure removal among nurse sows / Joab Malanda Osotsi, Gabriella Novotni-Danko, Peter Balogh
Dátum:2024
Megjegyzések:Due to hyperprolificacy in modern pig production, nurse sows are used to nurse surplus piglets. Additional stay in lactation results in loosing back fat thickness which is associated with poor reproductive performance. Therefore, the aim of this research was to characterize and quantify causes of Reproductive Failure (RF) removal and the risk of removal associated with parity. Archived reproductive data was retrieved from a large company database between 2016-2022. Records of 37852 nurse sows culled due to reproductive failure before reaching their next parity were analyzed using SPSS statistics software and Chi-square test used to test between the group differences. The major RF causes were; failure to conceive 30.7%, no heat 23.0% vaginal discharges 19.3%, abortion 11.4%, failed to farrow 8.0% and retained pigs 7.5%.The risk of removal due to fail to conceive was significant (?2=352.480, P<0.001was detected for abortion among parities. RF is an unplanned sow removal reason that requires decision making in an attempt to control it. Understanding the risk associated with each cause of RF removal could help producers plan how to decide on selecting a nurse sows.

Cím:Nurse Sow Management System -Level of awareness and adoption among small-scale pig farmers in Kenya's Nakuru County / Joab Malanda Osotsi, Péter Balogh, Gabriella Novotni Dankó
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:Nurse sow management system refers to the utilization of nurse sows for nursing piglets from multiple litters ensuring maximization on quality weaned piglets. Practically, it entails the practice of prolonging the period during which a sow nurses piglets beyond the conventional weaning age. This study sought to evaluate the level of awareness and implementation of the nurse sow management strategy in pig farming in Kenya's Nakuru County. The Kenyan pig farming is highly characterized by smallholder farmers deriving their income from the sell of piglets and mature pigs. A poll of pig farmers who attended the Nakuru Agricultural Show in July 2023 was used for the research. A total of (n) 139 farmers were interviewed within 7 days of the show. The corresponding author interviewed the respondents in a face to face engagement where questions on nurse sow management were initially drafted in English language and translated in Kiswahili second language in Kenya. Results indicated that, the farmers came from two broad regions of the North (n) 76 (54.7%) & South (n) 63 (45.3%). Level of awareness and adoption was insignificant at P<0.05 among the two groups. Average level of awareness is as a result of farmers having formal ways of knowledge gaining through outlet media, extension seminars and public shows, however their adoption level is minimal due to being small scale farmers who have reduced herd & litter sizes. The survey was crucial in exposing hidden information that lays a foundation of stakeholder education to fill the gap of knowledge and practice by sensitizing farmers for increased productivity through increase of herd and litter sizes.

Cím:The nurse sow system - A natural process of handling large litters: A review / Joab Malanda Osotsi, Gabriella Novotni-Danko, Peter Balogh
Dátum:2024
ISSN:1212-1819
Megjegyzések:Reproductive performance in pig production has gained genetic momentum resulting in large litters. Several strategies have been used to raise the number of piglets to address the challenge of a large litter size. This review provides a rationale for employing the nurse sow system as a biological way of handling large litters, exploring its step-by-step processes and its selected impacts. By exposing these steps, pig farmers will use the information to pinpoint their weak points in the chain and customize the procedures to meet their farm-specific goals for improved productivity. The nurse sow system helps to maximize pre-weaning survival by boosting the overall worth of low birth weight piglets. When piglets weaned per sow/year are used as a performance benchmark, nurse sows weaning double litters become economically advantageous. Extended time in lactation for nurse sows gives them an ample time for their uterus to involute before the next pregnancy. However, nurse sows lose their body reserves reflected in backfat thickness from high milk production. Prolonged confinement in lactation deteriorates the physical condition of nurse sows, resulting in leg ulcers and teat damage. Additionally, piglets are more distressed when taken away from their biological sow to a new sow.

Cím:Challenges in adoption of nurse sow management system among pig farmers in Nakuru county, Kenya / Osotsi J.M., Balogh P., Novotni Dankó G.
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:Nurse sows play a critical role in the pig industry responsible for nursing piglets from multiple litters. Their use is a promising management strategy aimed at optimizing pre-weaning survival. Management protocols in pig production have their own fair of challenges. This study sought to understand challenges that small scale pig farmers in Kenya face in implementing the nurse sow strategy. A survey was conducted during July 2023 among pig farmers who visited the annual Nakuru National Agricultural show where they were able to willfully respond to questions in an interview. Results indicate that ,of the total n= 139 interviewed pig farmers, major challenges in adoption of the strategy was hugely depicted as a feed challenge at n= 108 (78 %) owing to the fact that a nurse sow has to stay more in lactation consuming much feed resources unlike the non nurse sows. Market issue was a second challenge at n=83 (59%) as it was unfavorable to keep nurse sows under the current prevailing market conditions where pig prices and pork products were dissatisfying in relation to the input costs made. Since the use of nurse sows favours highly prolific sows, farmers expressed low litter sizes orchestrated by low prolific pig breeds as a limiting factor. As this information is unique to Kenyan pig farmers, the findings are valuable since they represent the typical manifestation of small scale pig production which accounts for over 80% of pig farming. The research results adds into a pull of knowledge which Kenyan stakeholders can use for policy changes to adopt maximally to the changing dynamics in pig production for increased productivity.

Megjegyzések:Pigs are the oldest domesticated animals, though their ancestry is still uncertain because of a lack of archaeological and genetic evidence. Pigs serve a vital role in reducing the demand for livestock and livestock products in most parts of the world. Especially in th e African continent, pigs serve as mobile cash implying how easily they can be converted into cash to sort pressing family needs. Pig production in Africa is different from advanced systems of production in temperate countries, however, it has similarities with most of the tropical low and middle-income nations. Pig production in Africa requires attention to enable it to contribute effectively to the growing African population. However, it has been orchestrated with a myriad of challenges including market access. This mini-review is designed in a manner to provide an overview of pig production contribution to livelihoods in Africa and associated challenges with possible appropriate solutions.
