Cím:Initial steps in the study of genetic diversity of pigeon breeds in the Middle East and Hungary / Katalin Balog, Al-Sallami Ali Salah Wadday, Lakhmi Chand Menghwar, Szilvia Kusza, Zoltán Bagi

Megjegyzések:Pigeon is one of the oldest domesticated animal species used by mankind in many ways. One of the most important of these its high biological value meat. Domestication probably occurred for nutritional and religious reasons in Central Asia between 4000 and 6000 BC. Pigeons have spread from Central Asia through pre-Asia to Assyria and then to Syria. As a result, the origins of many European breeds can be traced back to this area. For a long time, the Ottoman Empire linked Europe with the domestication centre of the domestic pigeon, which included, among others, large parts of present-day Iraq, the Balkans and a significant part of Hungary. This also supports the theory that some Hungarian breeds originated in the East. As the domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is still one of the less studied domestic species, there is not enough information available to answer this question. In this study, the genetic diversity of two Hungarian (Hungarian giant pigeon, Buga pigeon) and two Iraqi (Iraqi red pigeon, Iraqi Raabi pigeon) house pigeon breeds were investigated using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I region (mtDNA COI) markers. As the mtDNA COI is a standardized marker in birds, this provides the opportunity to analyse the new data obtained in this study in a broader context by complementing it with gene bank sequences. By investigating the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships between this four pigeon species of the two areas, we can contribute to the elucidation of the domestication history of the house pigeon.
