Megjegyzések:	The authors studied the frequency of oral contraceptive use and the presence of Leiden-mutation among women of fertile age treated for deep vein thrombosis. They found 76 female patients less than 45 years of age at the time of diagnosis of their deep vein thromboses. A structured self-administered questionnaire was completed and returned by 50 patients including data of their contraceptive history, obstetric events and predisposing factors. Molecular biology tests were performed in 45 cases in order to identify Leiden-mutation. 40 per cent of the patient were on combined contraceptive pills and 12 per cent were pregnant or delivered recently at the time of the deep vein thrombosis. The presence of Leiden-mutation was confirmed in a heterozygous form in 34 per cent of the patients. 8 per cent of the cases were homozygous for the Leiden-mutation. 58 per cent of the deep vein thrombosis patients were on the pill, were pregnant or had a childbirth recently, and had the Leiden-mutation at the time of the diagnosis. With such a high frequency of Leiden-mutation in the studied population, one may propose that routine screening for APC-resistance is recommended in countries with similarly high allelic frequency.

Megjegyzések:	The role of thrombophilia in the elevated risk of thromboembolism during oral contraceptive (OC) use has been established. The most common form of acquired thrombophilia is the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in the blood. We performed a cross-sectional study among young women to survey the occurrence of antiphospholipid antibodies among users and non-users of OC. Serum levels of IgG, IgA and IgM isotypes of anti-2-glycoprotein I and anticardiolipin antibodies were measured by validated ELISA methods. Regardless of the type of antiphospholipid antibody, pill-users had an elevated antibody titer more than twice as frequently as non-users (OR=2.3, 95 per centCI 1.15.1). The higher frequency of elevated antibody titer was related most commonly to IgG type anti-2-glycoprtein I antibodies. Oral contraceptive use increases the risk of elevated antiphospholipid antibody levels among asymptomatic young women.
