Megjegyzések:One of the main goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 is to avoid further loss of biodiversity and to restore ecosystems. These efforts can be facilitated by compiling the main research topics related to conservation biology to provide new evidence for the most urgent knowledge gaps, and publicise it to researchers, research funders and policy makers. We used the possible future statements from the Hungarian Environmental Foresight Report for 2050 which identified region-specific problems. To highlight likely future environmental and conservation questions, in this study we asked researchers from the fields of ecology and conservation to define research questions addressing these future statements in line with international research trends and challenges. The study resulted in fourteen priority research topics, split into seven clusters relevant to biological conservation that should be targeted by stakeholders, primarily policy makers and funders to focus research capacity to these topics. The main overarching themes identified here include a wide range of approaches and solutions such as innovative technologies, involvement of local stakeholders and citizen scientists, legislation, and issues related to human health. These indicate that solutions to conservation challenges require a multidisciplinary approach in design and a multi-actor approach in implementation. Although the identified research priorities were listed for Hungary, they are in line with European and global biodiversity strategies, and can be tailored to suit other Central and Eastern European countries as well. We believe that our prioritisation can help science?policy discussion, and will eventually contribute to healthy and well-functioning ecosystems.

Megjegyzések:Agricultural intensification threatens grasslands worldwideand the restoration of grasslands from arable lands canat least partially counter this threat. We studied grasslandrestoration by following early successional changesof arthropod assemblages (spiders, Araneae; true bugs,Heteroptera; orthopterans, Orthoptera; and ground beetles, arable lands and native grasslands as two ends of thesuccession timescale. To examine the changes in speciescomposition among the habitat types, we used habitat affinityindices based on fidelity and/or specificity of the species. We found that the number of species did not differ betweenhabitat types, while species composition changed markedlywith time. Species richness was thus not adequate todetect favorable changes after grassland restoration. Habitataffinity indices, on the other hand, were useful to detectcompositional changes caused by the increasing numbersof species characteristic of target grasslands as early asthe second year after restoration. Habitat affinity indicesare easy-to-use, easy-to-interpret measures of restorationsuccess; therefore, we recommend their use as measurescomplementary to species richness and simple similarity. Our results show that sowing low-diversity seed mixturefollowed by mowing and grazing can be particularly successfulin grassland restoration in time periods as short as2 years.

Cím:Species Richness Responses to Structural or Compositional Habitat Diversity between and within Grassland Patches: A Multi-Taxon Approach / Lengyel Szabolcs, Déri Eszter, Magura Tibor
Dátum:2016
ISSN:1932-6203
Megjegyzések:Habitat diversity (spatial heterogeneity within and between habitat patches in a landscape,HD) is often invoked as a driver of species diversity at small spatial scales. However, theeffect of HD on species richness (SR) of multiple taxa is not well understood. We quantifiedHD and SR in a wet-dry gradient of open grassland habitats in Hortobágy National Park (EHungary)and tested the effect of compositional and structural factors of HD on SR of floweringplants, orthopterans, true bugs, spiders, ground beetles and birds. Our dataset on 434grassland species (170 plants, 264 animals) showed that the wet-dry gradient (compositionalHD at the between-patch scale) was primarily related to SR in orthopterans, grounddwellingarthropods, and all animals combined. The patchiness, or plant association richness,of the vegetation (compositional HD at the within-patch scale) was related to SR ofvegetation-dwelling arthropods, whereas vegetation height (structural HD at the withinpatchscale) was related to SR of ground-dwelling arthropods and birds. Patch area wasrelated to SR only in birds, whereas management (grazing, mowing, none) was related toSR of plants and true bugs. All relationships between HD and SR were positive, indicatingincreasing SR with increasing HD. However, total SR was not related to HD because differenttaxa showed similar positive responses to different HD variables. Our findings, therefore, show that even though HD positively influences SR in a wide range of grassland taxa, each taxon responds to different compositional or structural measures of HD, resulting inthe lack of a consistent relationship between HD and SR when taxon responses are pooled. The idiosyncratic responses shown here exemplify the difficulties in detecting general HDSRrelationships over multiple taxa. Our results also suggest that management and restorationaimed specifically to sustain or increase the diversity of habitats are required to conservebiodiversity in complex landscapes.
