Cím:Catches of Euxoa tritici in pheromone traps for Anarsia lineatella are due to the presence of (Z)-5-decenyl acetate as an impurity / Antal Nagy, István Szarukán, Björn Bohman, Szabolcs Szanyi, Lajos Kozák, Arnold Szilágyi, Zoltán Imrei, József Vuts, Eszter Matula, Zoltán Varga, Miklós Tóth

Megjegyzések:Traps baited with the synthetic pheromone of Anarsia lineatella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) frequently captured also Euxoa tritici L. males (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in field tests in Hungary. As (E)-monounsaturated compounds are uncommon among sex attractants or pheromone components of Noctuidae, it was hypothesized that the Euxoa catches may have been due to impurities of the (Z) isomer in synthetic (E)-5-decenyl acetate, which is the major component in the pheromone lure of A. lineatella. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)-5-decenyl acetate captured large numbers of E. tritici, and the compound showed a clear dose-response effect. Reanalysis of the synthetic batch of (E)-5-decenyl acetate used in preparation of the A. lineatella lure showed the presence of 10% of the (Z) isomer. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)-5-decenyl acetate can be used in the future for detection and monitoring purposes of E. tritici, a widely distributed pest of cereals and other field crops. The compound also showed attraction of Euxoa seliginis Duponchel.

Cím:Flower-visiting preferences of lepidopterans in Transcarpathian grasslands (Velyka Dobron' Game Reserve, west Ukraine) / Aletta Ősz, Antal Nagy, Zoltán Varga, Szabolcs Szanyi
Dátum:2021
Megjegyzések:About 80% of European plant species require insect pollination made mainly by bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) to produce seeds and fruits. Recent studies showed that beyond bees many other insect taxa such as butterflies (Lepidoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidea) can play important role in the pollination. Although many investigations were made on pollination activity of bees especially in case of honeybees and bumblebees, the role and importance of other taxa are less studied and known. Our study on butterfly pollination was made in grasslands of the Velyka Dobron Wildlife Reserve (West Ukraine). The flower visiting preference of species was registered along 100 m long transects. During the study data on 10 abundant butterfly species belonging 4 families and 26 abundant plant species belonging to 10 families were collected. Butterfly species visited different flowers with significantly different frequencies. The most visited plants were Lythrum salicaria (Lythraceae), Betonica officinalis (Lamiaceae), Vicia cracca (Fabaceae), while relative frequencies of butterflies was also higher than 10% also on Centaurea jacea (Asteraceae) and Melampyrum nemorosum (Orobanchaceae).

Cím:Noctuid pests in forests of Transcarpathia / Ludvig Potish, Kálmán Szanyi, Zoltán Varga, Miklós Tóth, Antal Nagy, Szabolcs Szanyi
Dátum:2023
Megjegyzések:For many decades light traps have been the most common method for catching night active pests in plant protection and forestry, but newly developed baited traps using feeding attractants provide a more standard and easy-to-use method of monitoring. Studies carried out in agricultural habitats proved the efficiency of the bisex (attract both males and females) synthetic and semi-synthetic generic lures, especially in the case of species belonging to the Noctuidae family. The lures were tested in forests to collect data on forest pests and study the efficiency and selectivity of the lures in arboreal habitats. Samplings were made in the surroundings of Uzzhorod (Ungvár) in Transcarpathia (West Ukraine) with CSALOMON?VARL+ traps from 26. July to 16. October 2022. Two baits were tested with unbaited control traps in three reps.: FLO (floral): phenylacetaldehyde + eugenol + benzyl acetate (1:1:1); SBL (semisynthetic bisexual lure): isoamyl alcohol + acetic acid + red wine (1:1:1). During the study, 2289 specimens belonging to 68 Macroheterocera species were caught. Most species caught belonged to the Noctuidae family, but species of Erebidae and Geometridae were also trapped. Among Noctuidea the most species-rich subfamilies were Xyleninae, Hadeninae, and Noctuinae. Considering ecotypes, the ratio of silvicolous species was the highest, but there were many eurytopic and even migratory species too. The high ratio of the Euro-Siberian faunal elements referred to the geographic situation of the sampling site, however, some mediterranean species also appeared. The appearance of harmful and potential forest pest species could be also detected, but only with low abundances.

Cím:Attractivity of various artificial light sources to caddisfly (Trichoptera) species and its importance in their sampling and conservation / Kálmán Szanyi, Antal Nagy, Zoltán Varga, Ludvid Potish, Szabolcs Szanyi
Dátum:2022
ISSN:1366-638X 1572-9753
Megjegyzések:The artificial light sources are useful tools for sampling night active insects, however, they also possess potential environmental risks in their habitats. To test their applicability and evaluate environmental risk for caddisflies (Trichoptera), the attractivity of different portable light traps working with LED, UV and mixed-white light sources was studied and compared with attractivity of traditionally used mercury-vapour lamp (in Jermy-type light trap), which is tool of sampling and street-light. Analysing 1135 caught individuals of 19 species light sources emitting different wavelength spectra showed different attractivity and selectivity on caddisflies both on species and family levels. Attractivity of mercury-vapour lamp was generally lower than the other tested light sources. We found that the most attractive wavelength range for caddisflies is between 360 and 407 nm. One of the tested LED and mixed-white lamps together could cover this spectrum and a high and wide spectral peak of mixed-white light source between 375 and 391 nm resulted additional catches considering both species and number of individuals. Lamps emitting between 360 and 407 nm may be both a useful tool for sampling caddisflies and dangerous source of light pollution along lowland water courses where the sampled species are common and widespread.

Cím:Non-target noctuids from traps with synthetic Spodoptera frugiperda pheromone lure in the Carpathian Basin, Central Europe / Szabolcs Szanyi, Antal Nagy, Zoltán Varga, Miklós Tóth
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0013-8703
Megjegyzések:The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the most important invasive noctuid pests. Its appearance and rapid spread can be monitored with sex pheromone traps, but the catches can be confused by catches of non-target similar species. Here we present non-target catches of commercial pheromone traps of S. frugiperda in the Carpathian basin, which is a potential area of the pest. Sizable catches of Cucullia umbratica (L.), Agrotis bigramma (Esper), and Allophyes oxyacanthae (L.), common noctuids in East-Central Europe, were recorded in numerous sampling sites. Although they can be distinguished from the target species by their different morphology, it is necessary to draw the attention of agricultural experts to their possible presence in the traps to avoid misleading conclusions.

Dátum:2022
ISSN:2075-4450
Megjegyzések:The addition of synthetic eugenol and benzyl acetate to the known floral chemical and moth attractant phenylacetaldehyde synergized the attraction of Amata phegea (Lepidoptera: Amatidae). Traps baited with the ternary blend caught ca. four times more A. phegea moths than traps baited with phenylacetaldehyde alone. Both female and male moths were attracted; in a preliminary test, the female numbers caught were almost double compared to the males. Most A. phegea were caught when the blend was formulated in a dispenser with medium release rates. Traps baited with the ternary lure in polyethylene bag dispensers detected a single well-pronounced peak in seasonal trapping, suggesting that this multicomponent bisexual lure could be efficient enough to be applied to the detection and monitoring of female and male A. phegea.

Cím:Bisexual lures and their comparison with synthetic sex attractants for trapping Orthosia species (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) / Szanyi Szabolcs, Varga Zoltán, Nagy Antal, Jósvai Júlia K., Imrei Zoltán, Tóth Miklós
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0931-2048 1439-0418
Megjegyzések:Two bisexual lures have been developed using iso-amyl alcohol plus acetic acid combined with red wine extract (semisynthetic bisexual lure, SBL), or synthetic floral compounds (FLO) for trapping of noctuid moths with early spring activity of adults. Orthosia species were attracted by the tested semi-synthetic and synthetic lures indicating the possible role of the fermenting liquids and floral compounds in the feeding of these species. Bisexual lures attracted generally a lower number of individuals than the synthetic sex attractants of the given species, except for O. cerasi where FLO lures were more attractive than the sex attractant. Bisexual lures caught both sexes and females composed a sizable percentage of the catch. Since traps baited with different types of bisexual lures provided similar data on sex ratios, thus these presumably reflected the actual sex ratio of the given population. The use of these bisexual lures, especially of FLO in case of Orthosia spp., can be useful in surveys in which the capture of females and data on sex ratios are indispensable, for example in population dynamic and polyandry surveys. In contrast, in case of low population densities, the use of sex attractant lures seem to be still more efficient.

Megjegyzések:The performance of a semisynthetic bisexual lure (SBL, containing isoamyl alcohol, acetic acid and red wine) previously found attractive for a number of noctuids was compared with that of the respective synthetic sex attractants of Orthosia cerasi (=stabilis), O. cruda, O. gothica, O. incerta, Anorthoa munda and Conistra vaccini. The respective sex attractants performed significantly better in the Orthosia spp. than the SBL lure, which, although regularly catching low numbers of both females and males, did not differ significantly from zero catch in unbaited control traps. On the other hand, the SBL lure performed as well as the sex attractant in C. vaccini. Sizeable catches of C. rubiginea, C. rubiginosa and C. erythrocephala were also recorded in traps with the SBL lure. The SBL lure can prove to be a useful tool in ecological and faunistical studies of Conistra and related hibernating Xylenini species.
