Megjegyzések:The Eurasian Steppe belt is one of the largest biomes in the Northern Hemisphere. We provide here a range-wide phylogeography of the fightless steppe beetle Lethrus apterus that inhabits the western part of the Steppe belt through the study of population-level variance of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I sequences and nuclear microsatellites. We detected a concordant geographic structure of genetic data with a signifcant isolation-by-distance pattern. We found more genetic variation in the western part of the area and identifed Northern Bulgaria and the Pannonian Basin as possible refugia. Genetic clusters were separated by main rivers in the eastern part of the area. This implies west-to-east colonisation and argues for an evolutionarily recent arrival of this species to its current main distribution area, the Pontic Steppes. This contradicts the classical biogeographical wisdom that assumed an east-to-west colonisation pattern.

Cím:Phylogenetic relationships in the genus (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae) reveal contrasting evolutionary history in Europe / János P. Tóth, Judit Bereczki, Rita Rácz, Zoltán Varga, Zoltán Barta, Gábor Sramkó

Megjegyzések:In this study we analysed for the first time the phylogenetic relationshipsamong the EuropeanLethrusspecies based on mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear(H3, wingless) markers. The phylogenetic inference based on these genes indicated thatthe EuropeanLethrusspecies form a monophyletic group with two main lineages. Oneof them is distributed in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula (North Macedonia, northwestern Greece and southwestern Bulgaria) and includes five species (L. perun,L. raymondi,L. strymonensis,L. halkidikiensisandL. elephas). Three species of theother clade (L. schaumii,L. aresandL. schneideri) occur in the eastern part of the BalkanPeninsula (southeastern Bulgaria and northeastern Greece) while its fourth member,L. apterus, could colonize much larger areas in central and eastern Europe. Despite itslarge geographic distribution,L. apterusproved to be a single species. By contrast, wefound strong intraspecific differentiation in bothL. schaumiiandL. halkidikiensisinspite of their restricted distribution. Surprisingly, two highly divergent mitogroups werealso detected within a singleL. schneideripopulation. As the microsatellite markersdid not show any differentiation between them, this finding is likely to be accountedfor by a unidirectional hybridization event. These findings highlight that phylogeneticstudies or species descriptions should not be based on mitochondrial markers alone. Ourstudy clearly demonstrates that allopatric speciation is the most important speciationmechanism in the European species of the genusLethrus, although we also hypothesizethat other well-known factors, such as hybridization or the glacial-interglacial dynamics, could significantly affect the speciation patterns of certain lineages.

Cím:Life-history traits and climatic responsiveness in noctuid moths / Zsolt Végvári, Edit Juhász, János Pál Tóth, Zoltán Barta, Sándor Boldogh, Sándor Szabó, Zoltán Varga
Dátum:2015
ISSN:0030-1299
Megjegyzések:Emergence phenology has been shown to advance considerably in the past decades in many lepidopterans. Noctuid moths (Noctuidae) constitute a species-rich family of lepidopterans with a large diversity of life history traits presumably driving climatic responsiveness. In our study we aim to assess the role of life-history and ecological traits in climatic responsiveness of noctuid moths, whilst controlling for phylogenetic dependence. We used a long-term dataset of European noctuid moths collected from a light-trap in northeastern Hungary. As the study site is located at the intersection of several biogeographical zones harbouring a large number of noctuid moth species, our dataset provides a unique possibility to investigate the moths' climatic sensitivity. To estimate the role of life-history traits and ecological factors in driving lepidopterans' response to climatic trends, we employed three proxies related to the species' ecology (habitat affinity, food plant specialization and food type) and two robust types of life-history traits (migration strategy and hibernation form). The degree of temporal shifts of various measures of emergence phenology was related to hibernation stage, food type and migration strategy. Large-scale phylogenetic relatedness exerted little constraint in all models fitted on each measure of phenology. Our results imply that noctuid moths overwintering as adults exhibited greater degrees of phenological shifts than species hibernating as larvae or pupae. It implies that moths hibernating as adults are forced to suspend activity in our climate and the prolongation of autumn activity might be the result of increased plasticity in flight periods.
