Cím:A hitchhiker from the beach: the spread of the maritime halophyte Cochlearia danica along salted continental roads / Fekete R., Mesterházy A., Valkó O., Molnár V. A.

ISSN:0032-7786
Megjegyzések:The increase in road networks facilitates the dispersal of many species of plants along roadsides. In these special habitats, the use of deicing salt can provide suitable habitat conditions for theestablishment of stress-tolerant halophytes. This study investigates the spread of an alienhalophyte Cochlearia danica in continental Europe. This species is native to the Atlantic shoresof Europe, has already spread in many countries along roadsides and was recently discovered inHungary. We performed a literature review to track the European spread of this species, andinvestigated the Hungarian occurrences in detail. Then we determined the ability of this species toadapt to local soil conditions by means of soil analyses and germination tests using 19 differentNaCl concentrations and alkaline soils. To estimate the rate of spread, we estimated the size of thefour Hungarian populations in 2016 and 2017, and at the same time we measured the number offlowering stems, number of flowers in an inflorescence, number of seeds per fruit and seed mass.Cochlearia danica is recorded growing along roadsides in eight countries in continental Europe.Literature data indicate a rapid spread of this species along European roads, of 62?65 km/year.In Hungary this species is recorded at four roadside localities characterized by a high soil saltcontent. The relationship between NaCl concentration and percentage germination followeda sigmoidal curve. Germination tests revealed a significant negative effect of NaCl concentrationon germination above 0.5% NaCl, but germination occurred even on extremely saline substrateswith a 2% NaCl concentration. The area of the largest Hungarian population decreased by morethan 99% and that of the second largest population increased by more than 30% between 2016 and2017. Even though this species can adapt to high salinity in the soil, these rapid and markedchanges in population size indicate that the population dynamics of this species may depend oninteractions between the amount of local precipitation and soil type. Our study indicates that weshould expect further occurrences of C. danica along roads.

Megjegyzések:Th e present part of the series of miscellaneous new records provides new chorological data of one moss and ten vascular plants. Six species (Ammannia coccinea, Chenopodium pumilio, Elodea nuttallii, Lindernia procumbens, Paspalum dilatatum, Verbena supina) and one hybrid (Potamogeton xangustifolius) are reported for the fi rst time from the territory of Albania, one (Potamogeton pusillus) is confi rmed there and it is ascertained that one further species (Potamogeton praelongus) was previously reported there in error. One alien species (Ammannia coccinea) is reported from the territory of the Republic of Macedonia for the fi rst time and one alien (Atriplex micrantha) from Hungary for the fi rst time. One species (Ptilium crista-castrensis) is new to the southern Nyírség region (E Hungary) and one (Carex pilulifera) is new for the Aggtelek, Bükk, and Zemplén Mts (N Hungary).

Cím:Changes in sediment seed-bank composition of invaded macrophyte communities in a thermal river / Anna E. Vojtkó, Attila Mesterházy, Kristóf Süveges, Orsolya Valkó, Balázs A. Lukács
Dátum:2017
ISSN:0046-5070 1365-2427
Megjegyzések:1. Thermal waters, characterised by high water temperatures throughout the year, harbour a special flora atypical of temperate climatic conditions that are adapted to the combination of high water temperatures and low oxygen and carbonate contents. However, these ecosystems are susceptible to the invasion of tropical macrophytes because conditions in thermal waters are similar to those of in warmer latitudes. 2. We studied the vegetation and viable seed bank in an alien-dominated upstream section of a thermal river in Hungary, and a native-dominated downstream section of the same river where temperature was cooler and less stable. Our hypotheses were as follows: (1) alien and native plant species are clearly separated along the river, and this separation is driven by environmental factors (water temperature, conductivity and sediment characteristics); and (2) the species composition of seed banks reflects that of the established macrophytes, and thus, the seed-bank composition would differ in the up- and downstream reaches. 3. We defined 20 sampling units in two sections of the Hev ız River in West Hungary. The vegetation was surveyed in every sampling unit, and environmental variables (sediment and water) were recorded. Five sediment cores were taken from each sampling unit and incubated in a greenhouse under waterlogged conditions. 4. The mean seed-bank density was lower than any of the previously published values for aquatic plant communities. In total, fewer species germinated from the seed bank than the number of species observed in the vegetation. Moreover, the Sørensen similarity index, comparing the vegetation and seed-bank species composition, was extremely low. The lowest seed-bank density and diversity were detected in the alien-dominated upstream river section, where significantly fewer native species were present in the seed bank. 5. Despite favourable conditions for alien macrophytes to establish in this thermal river, they did not build up considerable persistent seed banks. We conclude that the dominance of aliens modified the species composition of both the vegetation and the seed bank, mainly by depleting the seed bank of native species. Therefore, future efforts to restore native vegetation from the seed bank may require a number of different strategies.
