Megjegyzések:Students are often reluctant to report the academic dishonesty of their peers. Loyalty to friends and classmates has previously been identified as an important reason for this. This paper explores loyalty conflicts among students from upper secondary school, through bachelor's, to Ph.D. level. Drawing on semi-structured qualitative interviews (N = 72) conducted in Denmark, Ireland and Hungary, we show that loyalty considerations among students can be complex and draw on a range of norms including responsibility. The study demonstrates how students are often willing to assume substantial personal responsibility for dealing with the academic dishonesty of a peer, often preferring this to reporting. However, when deciding on the right course of action, they also perceive tensions between the norms of the good researcher and student and their own norms of being a good friend and person. The loyalty considerations and tension were identified in all three countries and across the educational levels, which suggests that this is a cross-cultural challenge. We argue that institutions should formally decide whether they want students to take some degree of responsibility themselves for addressing less serious cases of academic dishonesty and communicate their decision to their students.

Megjegyzések:As biomedical researchers are well aware, animal experimentation is a highly controversial activity, with the main worries centring on the harm caused to non-human animals. Whether this harm is acceptable and can be balanced against benefits, as well as how in practice to minimize it, has been widely addressed in the ethics and laboratory animal science literature, and the scientific community has developed a number of mechanisms to handle these questions. However, scientists and ethics committees usually only look at specific experiments and do not raise more general questions about the value of animal experimentation. When we widen the discussion to consider these more general questions, research from other fields becomes relevant. The aim of this paper is to discuss examples of such research which may serve to broaden the ethical discussion of animal-based research. Within the philosophy of science there is a primarily theoretical epistemological analysis of the role of animal models in biomedical and biological research (e.g. LaFollette and Shanks' analysis of 'brute science'), which may provide a critical perspective on questions about the type of knowledge to be gained from research with animals. This is related to a more empirical analysis of actual animal research within at least some of the biological and biomedical research disciplines (e.g. the CAMARADES consortium analysis of 'bias at the bench'), challenging the idea that when animals are used, this is always done in the best way. The sociological and anthropological studies of the culture of the scientific research laboratory (e.g. Birke's descriptions of the 'rite of passage' students go through to become laboratory scientists) may help us to understand how the utility of animal experimentation comes to be widely accepted within the scientific community.

Megjegyzések:The use of animals to model humans in biomedical research relies on the notion that basic processes are sufficiently similar across species to allow extrapolation. Animal model validity is discussed in terms of the similarity between the model and the human condition it is intended to model, but no formal validation of models is applied. There is a stark contrast here with the use of non-animal alternatives in toxicology and safety studies, for which an extensive validation is required. We discuss both the potential and the limitations of validating preclinical animal models for proof-of-concept studies, by using an approach similar to that applied to alternative non-animal methods in toxicology and safety testing. A major challenge in devising a validation system for animal models is the lack of a clear gold standard with which to compare results. While a complete adoption of the validation approach for alternative methods is probably inappropriate for research animal models, key features, such as making data available for external validation and defining a strategy to run experiments in a way that permits meaningful retrospective analysis, remain highly relevant.

Megjegyzések:The use of animals for research remains a highly controversial issue that receives much public attention and comment. This was illustrated, for example, by the participation in the European Commission's internet consultation on the revision of Directive 86/609/EEC, which regulates their use in this way. Moreover, scientists using animals in their work still face fierce, sometimes violent opposition that includes death threats or the vandalism of research facilities by anti-vivisectionist and animal rights groups who want to see all use of animals in research completely banned. Given the polarizing nature of the issue, it is not always easy for the public and lawmakers to effectively weigh the benefits of biomedical research against the deaths of the animals used.
