Megjegyzések:This paper summarizes NMR-related activity of the colloid group of the Department of Physical Chemistry, the former Department of Colloid and Environmental Chemistry, of the University of Debrecen. We have published about 30 papers in the last decade on this subject in collaboration with Hungarian and international partners. The goal of this paper is to encourage colloid chemists to use NMR spectroscopy and to enlighten for them the gain which can be obtained from NMR. Normally the NMR labs are accessible through specially trained operators who are, as a matter of fact, professional in high resolution multidimensional methods for organic chemistry. This communication hopefully helps to bring closer colloid chemistry to the operators and facilitate the communication between colloid chemists and NMR experts.

Cím:Interaction of resorcinol-formaldehyde carbon aerogels with water: A comprehensive NMR study / Kéri Mónika, Nyul Dávid, László Krisztina, Novák Levente, Bányai István
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0008-6223
Megjegyzések:Carbon aerogels prepared from resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels are promising platforms for electrodes, catalysts, adsorbents in environmental chemistry and as electric conductors. For these applications the knowledge of their structure and behavior in aqueous medium is essential. In this work two resorcinolformaldehyde (RF) carbon aerogels prepared in different ways were characterized with various NMR methods while their pore structure was stepwise saturated with water. The wetting properties were studied by vapor adsorption and low-field NMR relaxometry, while the morphology was followed by NMR cryoporometry during the hydration process. At several water saturation levels the self-diffusion of water was measured. The comprehensive evaluation of the results led to a detailed description of the wetting process of these carbon aerogels beyond the pore size distributions. At low hydration level water clusters formed on and around the hydrophilic functional groups of the surface being able to adsorb water, but no continuous water layer developed on the surface. With increasing water content, spherical water drops formed inside the pore system, and vapor phase diffusion was observed in the partially filled pores. Subsequently the interconnected pore structure was saturated. The determined wet structure was compared to low temperature nitrogen gas adsorption results and scanning electron microscopy images.

Cím:Beware of phosphate: evidence of specific dendrimer-phosphate interactions / Mónika Kéri, Zoltán Nagy, Levente Novák, Edit Szarvas, Lajos P. Balogh, István Bányai
Dátum:2017
ISSN:1463-9076 1463-9084
Megjegyzések:Dendrimers are extensively studied for drug delivery and catalysis, most of which are pH dependent. Phosphate buffer solutions (PBSs) are often used to adjust the pH. We have found that phosphate ions become incorporated into poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer molecules by forming H-bonds with tertiary nitrogens. We show that this specific interaction between H2PO4- and HPO42- ions and generation five PAMAM dendrimers causes a decrease in hydrodynamic size, disturbing the outcome of the size exclusion chromatography analysis. We monitored this interaction by 1H and 31P high resolution NMR, NMR-diffusiometry, pH-potentiometry and infrared spectroscopy. Failing to take into account this effect may lead to incorrect conclusions and misinterpreting interactions of PAMAM dendrimers with drug molecules and subsequently incorrect dosing. The phosphate salts of amino terminated generation five PAMAM dendrimers are stable for years when stored in the dark, even in dilute aqueous solutions, which has important implications for the shelf-life of dendrimer-based drug delivery systems.

Cím:13C NMR analysis of cellulose samples from different preparation methods / Mónika Kéri, László Palcsu, Marianna Túri, Enikő Heim, Andrea Czébely, Levente Novák, István Bányai
Dátum:2015
ISSN:0969-0239
Megjegyzések:Alpha-cellulose is a part of the wooden material that preserves isotopic composition during tree-growth, and therefore provides important indirect data for paleoclimatological studies. For this reason, it is exceptionally important to extract the alpha-cellulose component from plants, e.g. from tree rings of wood. Since the cell wall of plant cells consists of multicomponent polysaccharides, the extraction of cellulose from wood is not an obvious task. In this paper, we describe, evaluate and compare nine methods, based on the literature and experimental observations, for obtaining cellulose from tree rings of wood. We show that the distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer (DEPT-135) variant of liquidstate 13C NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical method for monitoring the preparation process. Trifluoroacetic acid was applied as solvent for the NMR analysis. We proved that all the preparation methods give pure cellulose samples without hemicellulose and lignin content, and we propose methods resulting in non-fragmented cellulose. 13C and 18O isotope ratio measurements have shown that all the applied extraction methods result in similar isotope ratios, thus they are suitable for paleoclimatological studies.

Cím:A Simple Elimination of the Thermal Convection Effect in NMR Diffusiometry Experiments / Dávid Nyul, Levente Novák, Mónika Kéri, István Bányai
Dátum:2022
ISSN:1420-3049
Megjegyzések:Thermal convection is always present when the temperature of an NMR experiment is different from the ambient one. Most often, it falsifies the value of the diffusion coefficient determined by NMR diffusiometry using a PGSE NMR experiment. In spite of common belief, it acts not only at higher temperatures but also at temperatures lower than in the laboratory. Sodium alkyl-sulfate monomers and micelles in D2O solvent were used as model molecules measured at T = 319 K in order to show that thermal convection sometimes remains hidden in experiments. In this paper, we demonstrate that the increase in apparent diffusion coefficient with increasing diffusion time is a definite indicator of thermal convection. Extrapolation to zero diffusion time can also be used to obtain the real diffusion coefficient, likewise applying the less sensitive pulse sequences designed for flow compensation or the expensive hardware, e.g., sapphire or Shigemi NMR tubes, to decrease the temperature gradient. Further, we show experiments illustrating the effect of a long diffusion time in which the periodic changes of the echo intensity with gradient strength appear as predicted by theories.
