Megjegyzések:This paper provides an overview of the state of the art in research into the so-called Pronoun Interpretation Problem in first language acquisition, and it discusses the relevance of this problem in the acquisition of Hungarian. It is well-known that children face problems in judgement tasks concerning the acceptability of locally coreferential personal pronouns, whereas they can handle locally bound reflexive anaphors relatively well. Preliminary evidence suggesting the presence of the Problem in the first language acquisition of Hungarian is available, but research into this domain of Hungarian is still in its infancy. This paper aims at setting up the outlines of a research agenda for the study of the core issues in the acquisition of the Hungarian pronominal system

Megjegyzések:This paper presents an overview of current formal semantic analyses aimed at describing the interpretation of complex demonstratives (that dog, that black dog) based on Hungarian examples. Kaplan's (1989a, 1989b) classic theory treats complex demonstratives as directly referential expressions, but contemporary approaches challenge this view and argue in favour of indirect referentiality. King (2001) and Ahn (2022) suggest that complex demonstratives are special definite descriptions with a hidden argument, while Wolter (2006) argues in a situational semantic framework that complex demonstratives refer uniquely with respect to a contextually constrained situational parameter. The analyses presented not only offer a uniform treatment of both deictic and non-deictic uses of complex demonstratives, but can also capture the similarity between definite descriptions and complex demonstratives

Megjegyzések:The paper compares the use of deictic demonstratives in English and in Hungarian. English data are based on a quantitative study of proximal and distal demonstratives in English by Luz and Van der Sluis (2011), data on Hungarian come from an empirical study. Taking as a starting point Piwek et al.'s work on Dutch (2008), I designed an experiment (a controlled dialogue game), where participants worked with Lego blocks of the DUPLO series. Using statistical methods to analyse the empirical data, cognitive factors influencing the choice of demonstratives are tested.

Megjegyzések:This paper examines various hypotheses regarding the choice of English proximal and distal gestural demonstratives in an experimental framework. Using the so called scripted dialogue technique it is shown that there is a significant difference between the choice of demonstratives depending on the nature of context (noncontrastive vs. contrastive). In non-contrastive contexts distance plays a crucial role, but in contrastive contexts the pattern of demonstratives changes, i.e. in contrastive contexts distance as a factor competes with some other factor

Megjegyzések:This paper examines various linguistic contexts where the subjunctive proper and/or the imperative mood are licensed in Hungarian. Minimal pairs of contexts, where both moods are grammatical, are also explored in an experimental framework. The paper argues that semantic factors influence the distribution of the imperative and the subjunctive proper in complement clauses and that the imperative and the subjunctive proper need to be treated as separate grammatical moods in Hungarian

Megjegyzések:In the case of languages which make a two-way distinction between demonstrative terms the choice between spatial demonstratives has traditionally been assumed to depend on the referent's physical proximity to the speaker. However, recently this egocentric and speaker-anchored view has been challenged, and the addressee's role in demonstrative reference has been emphasized (Peeters & Özyürek 2016). This paper reports the results of a production study on the use of Hungarian demonstrative determiners. It is argued that though the traditional view cannot be rejected, it is not satisfactory in itself, i.e. besides relative distance from the speaker the establishment or lack of joint attention between speaker and hearer to the referent and the presence or absence of a pointing gesture are also decisive factors.
