Cím:Call rate in Common Cuckoos does not predict body size and responses to conspecific playbacks / Elek Zoltán, Bán Miklós, Fülöp Attila, Marton Attila, Hauber Márk E., Moskát Csaba

Megjegyzések:The brood parasitic Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus is best known for its two-note "cu-coo" call which is almost continuously uttered by male during the breeding season and can be heard across long distances in the field. Although the informative value of the cuckoo call was intensively investigated recently, it is still not clear whether call characteristic(s) indicate any of the phenotypic traits of the respective vocalising individuals. To fill this gap, we studied whether the call rate of male cuckoos (i.e., the number of calls uttered per unit of time) provides information on their body size, which might be a relevant trait during intrasexual territorial conflicts. We captured free-living male cuckoos and measured their body size parameters (mass, wing, tail and tarsus lengths). Each subject was then radio-tagged, released, and its individual "cu-coo" calls were recorded soon after that in the field. The results showed that none of the body size parameters covaried statistically with the call rates of individual male Common Cuckoos. In addition, we experimentally tested whether the "cu-coo" call rates affect behavioural responses of cuckoos using playbacks of either a quicker or a slower paced call than the calls with natural rates. Cuckoos responded similarly to both types of experimental playback treatments by approaching the speaker with statistically similar levels of responses as when presented with calls at the natural rate. We conclude that male Common Cuckoos do not advertise reliable information acoustically regarding their body size, and so, cuckoo calls are neither useful to characterize cuckoos' phenotypic traits directly nor to indicate environmental quality indirectly.

Cím:How to Spot a Stranger's Egg? : a Mimicry-Specific Discordancy Effect in the Recognition of Parasitic Eggs / Csaba Moskat, Aniko Zölei, Mikl os Bán, Zoltan Elek, Lainga Tong, Nikoletta Geltsch, Mark E. Haube

Megjegyzések:Egg discrimination by hosts is an antiparasitic defence to reject foreign eggsfrom the nest. Even when mimetic, the presence of brood parasitic egg(s)typically alters the overall similarity of all eggs in a clutch, producing a dis-cordant clutch compared to more homogenous clutches of composed onlyof hosts' own eggs. In multiple parasitism, the more foreign eggs are laidin the nest, the more heterogeneous the overall clutch appears. Perceptualfilters and recognition templates cannot explain the known pattern oflower rejection rates of foreign eggs in multiple vs. single parasitism. Wetherefore assessed the role of clutch homogeneity and manipulated thecolour of one or more eggs in the clutches of great reed warbler (Acroceph-alus arundinaceus) hosts of common cuckoos (Cuculus canorus). Varying thecolours of both the majority and the minority eggs caused predictableshifts in the rejection of the focal egg(s), and ejection rates of the minorityegg colour consistently increased but only when it belonged to a moremimetic egg colour, relative to the less mimetic colour of majority eggs. The results imply that in addition to sensory filters, and template-basedcognitive decision rules, discordancy-based rejection is affected by theoverall clutch appearance and interacts with specific colours varying inthe extent of mimicry, to contribute to the recognition decisions of hosts to reject parasitic eggs.

Cím:Foreign egg retention by avian hosts in repeated brood parasitism : why do rejecters accept? / Csaba Moskát, Márk E. Hauber, Zoltán Elek, Moniek Gommers, Miklós Bán, Frank Groenewoud, Tom S. L. Versluijs, Christiaan W. A. Hoetz, Jan Komdeur

Megjegyzések:Great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) are frequently parasitized by egg-mimetic common cuckoos (Cuculus canorus) in Hungary, and these hosts reject about a third of parasitic eggs. The timing of parasitism is important, in that the probability of rejection decreases with advancing breeding stages in this host. Also, egg rejection is more common when a clutch is parasitized by a single foreign egg, compared to parasitism by multiple eggs. We repeatedly parasitized great reed warbler clutches with moderately mimetic foreign eggs, either with (1) one foreign egg (single parasitism) and, after 3 days, by all foreign eggs (multiple parasitism), or (2) all foreign eggs and, 3 days later, by only one foreign egg. Hosts ejected 26-53 % of the experimental parasitic eggs in the first stage of the repeated parasitism, but almost all eggs were accepted int he second stage, irrespective of weather the clutch was singly or multiply parasitized. Video-taping of the behavioural responses of hosts to experimental parasitism revealed no evidence for sensory constraints on foreign-egg recognition, because hosts recognized and pecked the parasitic eggs as frequently in the second stage of repeated parasitism, as they did int he first stage. We suggest that the relative timing of parasitism (laying vs. incubation stage), rather than learning to accept earlier-laid foreign eggs, results in higher acceptance rates of cuckoo eggs in repeated parasitism, because there is decreasing natural cuckoo parasitism on this host species and, hence, less need for antiparasitic defences, with the advancing stages of breeding.
